DH wants a nice and relaxing trip within a days drive in September. Thought about the Georgia/South Carolina coast. Anyone been there? If so where did you stay?? What is the weather in September?? Should we go to the Gulf Coast???? DH wants a very relaxing trip....aka NO MOUSE!!

Thanks!!!!

I was to Jekyl Island many years ago (about 12 or so) and if you are looking for a beach and nothing else than I would go there. When we were there last there was a restaurant and a large hotel (which may have had things to do) and that is all. We lived in St. Mary's so we didn't stay the night as it wasn't that far.

I have never been to Hilton Head, but have heard great things about it and have considered going, but just never had the time.

Hopefully someone else will see this and be able to comment further.

Hilton Head Island would still be really nice at that time of year. It is beautiful there with tons to do and hundreds of great restaurants. The beach is nice and wide and in Sept., the water would still be really warm. I love HH.

WE have stayed at the Crown Plaza in Hilton Head. We are not golfers, but had a great time at the beach, shopping, eating and playing miniature golf!! It is really a beautiful island! Crown Plaza is located at the Shipyard Plantation and you have to pass through a guard to enter this section of Hilton Head!

Only been to HH and that was in September. It was GREAT if you want low key and relaxing. The beaches were very nice. PM me if you want specifics.

BTW, I liked my day trip to Savannah, and my day trip to Bluffton.

I actually wish HH had a little MORE to do. Not a lot, but definitely MORE. They do have tremendous variety of restaurants, tho.

I've only been to Jeckyl Island, and that was 30 years ago, so my memory might be a bit fuzzy of it, but it was a lovely beach. I miss it.

Hilton Head has a ton of things to do but you have to look for them. There is nothing in your face. Tennis and golf and the beach are really the only obvious activities but you have to look beyond. Sea kayaking, crabbing, dinner cruises, nature hikes, etc.

All true, and we did that. But I mean things like a big movie theater or a place to go dancing. If that was / is there, we surely missed it.

We stayed at HH DVC and also at a home on the beach. 10 days.

went to Jekkyl this past year for a conference ... it is VERY VERY VERY laid back ... as in not much to do but rest and relax. they do have some day trips to other places, but mainly beach and stuff. there are a few hotels, but it is certainly not commercial by any stretch of the means. there is a beautiful resort that is an older property on the waterway NOT the beach. it is suppose to be the "nicest" place on the island. we stayed at the Clarion and didn't have a great experience. if you end up at the clarion, be sure to request a NEW room. they had just remodeled, so we expected a new room, but got a VERY old room (think duct tape, kitchen floor torn, carpet torn and stained ... and this was the 2nd room we got and I am a travel agent (who they usually like to impress) ... the old tenants even left us a BOWL OF
CEREAL & MILK IN THE KITCHEN CABINET...very gross, but I digress ... haha! :)

HH has much more to do!

Have you thought about Charleston ... you could stay at maybe Kiawah Island or a beach nearby, then go into downtown for a day or two?

We stayed at the Hilton on Hilton Head this past summer. The hotel was beautiful with nice landscaping. Our room was ocean view and we could view the ocean from our bed. There are boardwalks out back that lead to the pools, bar, and ocean. Dolphins hang out about 40 feet from the beach and you can watch them play, swim among them or take a water bike out to them. There are alot of great restaurants on the island. HH is definately worth visiting.

Have you given any thought to St. Simons Island in Georgia? It is not that much farther than Hilton Head and close to Jekyl. We always stay at the King and Prince resort. It is very nice and right on the beach.

There are two huge movie theatres and a small one (Coligny is the small one, Northride has 10 theatres and I think Park Plaza has about 5). Monkey Business is the biggest dance club on the Island but there are also some restaurants that have entertainment and dancing like the Kingfisher and I think some of the big hotels have dancing. The Jazz Corner has dancing too. The thing is, everything is tucked away and you have to ask.

I saw the Coligny one.... TINY. Hmmmn.... Monkey Business? I thought I had seen almost everything.... but not that. If we go again I will certainly check it out.

Jazz Corner... we went. I'm sure for some it is great. ;)

EDIT... my one bit of advice.... AVOID THE BAMBOO ROOM at Coligny.... My wife and I thought that quite possibly this was the worst food we have ever eaten anywhere... Wretched, wretched, food.

Thanks for the advise. I has thought about staying at one of the hotels, the Crown Plaze or the Hilton. Had even thought about renting a house on the beach, not sure if that is something that would be of use to us. It will just be the 2 of us, and I want maid service. I had also given some thought to St. Simons Island and Kiawah Island.
I prefer a little action, like a boardwalk or small village to walk to. My DH could sit on the beach all week and not get bored. I on the other hand have ADD, and have to do SOMETHING other than sitting on a beach. I am one of those who have no idea how to relax.

Ditto! We heard great things about it but it was awful!

Well Papa, we've never eaten at the Bamboo and I guess we won't go now! I guess you aren't recommending the Jazz Corner either? I'll keep that off my list. The Northridge movie theatre is across from the Steinmart in the same plaza as Home Goods. The Park Plaza theatres is near the entrance to Sea Pines. Both are tucked way, way back and I don't think you would see them from the road, especially since there are no billboards or even street lights!!! They are building a beautiful new entertainment complex off the island out by Hampton Hall. It looks very impressive!

Sea Turtle Cinemas opened in November. You can read a review of the theatre complex here. It's very nice and shops and restaurants are coming soon.
