BedBugs-be carefull!

Getting ready for another bed bug thread. popcorn::

Seriously, it does happen and we do need to know what to look for.

My thoughts exactly! I remember last year pages and PAGES were dedicated to the 'outbreak' at...was it POFQ? I don't remember.

There really is lots of info online and already in this thread on how to check for bed bugs.

I wish everyone a happy, magical, bed bug free trip!

I remember that thread and it happened at POR. The lady it happened to had a son with asperger (sp?) which made it even that more traumatic for her. I love POR, but it does concern me - if this is a legitimate post - and I have no reason to think otherwise.

ewwwwwww, I'm totally disturbed by this thread. I don't want to look for any bedbugs, or nonetheless FIND ANY. I would totally freak out. Maybe I'll cancel my trip and hope theres not a bug infestation in my own room.

*Ummm...do I really want to know this?!* What does a bedbug look like?

Hmmm, rooms were sold out in June... maybe I should check for vacancies at WDW again.:rotfl:

They are nasty, but honestly no more so than mosquitos, blackflies, ticks, and the other blood parasites we live with. And unlike mosquitos and ticks they supposedly don't spread disease, though I think they're is probably some debate on that. I think it's mostly the idea that they're in the bed with us that really freaks us out.

Yes they are nasty but here is the truth. . .you probably have more bedbugs in your home mattress than any mattress at WDW. . .the resorts must change their mattresses every so many years, you at home are not. See what I mean?

Do they live in a bed that pretty much remains unoccupied?

I just checked for signs on the mattress in my guest room. This used to be our old mattress. I didn't see anything at all, no brown spots, no dead bugs, no live bugs, nothing. Just curious to know if they have to have people in the beds to survive.

Don't even joke about CSR and bed bugs.. I'm one month away from a stay there.. I can't be paranoid about this. :)

Knox

I'm about 1 month away from a stay at CSR also and I feel the same way as you. I've got to get this out of my mind.

I kind of doubt that. One, you'll know if you have bed bugs, as they multiply you'll get more and more bites. Eventually, you will find the tell tale signs of infestation such as blood spots, excrement, skins, and the bugs themselves. Two, a single resort room is inhabited by 50 or more different guests a year, and the bugs will migrate to other rooms. All it takes is one guest who brings some "friends" on vacation with them. The growth of international travel coupled with restrictions on certain pesticides(especially DDT) in the US has had the largest impact on their resurgence. Bedbugs were pretty much erradicated in the US for decades - it is only recently (past 10 - 20 years) that they have been making a big comeback, mostly due to infestation caused by traveler's bringing them here from foreign countries where they have historically been less controlled.

Be it bed bugs or most anything else, there are all sorts of nasty things on and in motel sheets and mattresses.

I think the one person was talking about the mites in the bed, not bed bugs (two totally different things!)

I will make sure to check my room at the hotel in Paris, I almost forgot. They have actually had an infestion before (a year or two back), and ended up getting everything changed out because of it. But it can happen anywhere, unfortunately!

 You MUST mean dust mites, not bed bugs. I don't know anyone that has bedbugs at home. I have heard of the occasional hotel room getting them though. Foreign travelers have caused the resurgence.

Dust mites are everywhere though.

Anybody else feeling itchy right now?

I am definitely feeling itchy right now. I just wonder why the resorts aren't checked for this problem. Would it be that difficult for the cleaning staff, when changing sheets, to spend an extra few minutes when someone is checking out, to examine the mattress for signs. Even if it isn't discovered immediately upon someone checking out, I would think it would be noticed soon.:sad2:

Bedbugs are a type of mite. They are related to headlice and can travel in the same ways. My roomie used to be a hair dresser, and let me tell you it's not only foriegn guests who are infested with this kind of stuff...

BTW, here's a bedbug..

Here's a dust mite (Bedbug's little cousin)
