Bed Bugs at DL hotel.....

I just returned from a trip to DL a couple of days ago and stayed at the DL hotel. I now have a rash on both of my legs, and so does my mom. We suspect there were bed bugs at DL hotel. Have any of you experienced the same there?

wow that's a first, never heard anything like that hapening at a disney hotel anywhere. i know it happened last year the at fairfield marriott but that's about it.

It's happened at the All-Star resorts in WDW. Bed Bugs aren't really a rash. Google it and see if it looks the same.

interesting, when did it happen at the all-star resorts? i thought disney actually took very good care of their bedding...guess i could be wrong.

Bedbugs are not caused by poor housekeeping, it's become an increasing problem in the hotel business and once a room has them they are VERY difficult to get rid of, sometimes requiring the removal of ALL the matresses, furniture, bedding, carpets....

hmm, rash? doesn't soundlioek bedbugs maybe an allergy to the detergents used? I know I break out in an itchy rash whenever I ride on GRR, any possible spot that gets wet causes raised itchy rash.

That's what I was thinking. It could have also been the hotel soap or lotion.

That's true about the housekeeping. And I've read reports about how they are becoming more common.

Also even though they are called bed bugs I learned that's a little misleading since they can in fact hide many other places including:

in the cracks and electical outlets in walls, base boards and picture frames, between beds and around the creases of mattresses and in bedding materials, in drapery pleats & hems, beneath loose wallpaper, in headboards, desks, entertainment centers and nightstands, behind base molding in wall-mounted artwork, etc.

UGH!! They can be anywhere it sounds like. I just hate the thought of them. Gives me the creeps.

Some of them look like flea bites, imo... Probably similiar type of bugs since it appears they feed on a 'host'. I've heard that it's become an increasing problem because the pesticides that could kill the bugs have all been banned. That's the problem. In order to get rid of the bugs, they need the chemicals to kill them. But the pesticides were known to cause cancer, etc., and to get into the groundwater. Most unfortunate....

There is also a "heat rash" that you can get after a long day at the park that might last for a couple of days. This happens due to the sun and heat reflecting off the pavement that we all spend hours walking around on when visiting the parks. My wife gets this from time to time during our trips to WDW. Looks like bug bites but it is really a heat rash.

I have seen threads on this on the Disney World Theme Parks board.

Anyone else hear of this?

If it really is bedbugs, you should report it to the DLR hotel immediately so they can take steps to prevent it from becoming an epidemic! (although it does sound more like allergies or heat rash). Also, maybe go consult your doc. If it IS bedbugs, you should seriously consider getting rid of your bedding at home at a minimum, you don't want them in you house!! They are nasty!

I am at the DLH now, and have been here since last Friday. No bedbugs, no rashes. We did have a few ants in the bathroom, but they took care of that right away.

It was on wdwinfo about 3 weeks ago. The incident occurred sometime last year, if I remember correctly. The family was compensated with cash and a free trip. It's not common and, as has been mentioned in this thread, it's not a matter of poor housekeeping. People stop at cheap hotels while driving down to Disney, pick them up and transport them.....or bring them from home!

Oh my gosh! How ironic! We did just stay there end of last year; do you remember when that was?

I've had some weird spots on me that increased in number suddenly. I went to the doctor, and because I'm a nurse, the MD gave me prophylactic for scabies. I really didn't think that's what it was, especially since they never itched. Now that I'm looking at all the people's pictures online, that looks way like I have!

Wow, I would hope they wouldn't have a problem with something like that. Unfortunately, it's one of my biggest fears at any hotel we stay at. Especially since I have kids.

It is a very common problem at Disney and all kinds of hotels including the GC. We stayed at POR in WDW last FEB and they hitched a ride home back to Calgary in our suitcase They look like a mosquito bite and usually follow a straight line of bites and the worse itching EVER!

Advice: Do not open you suitcase until you check the mattress and headboard. Do not leave your suitcases sitting on the floor.
When you get home do not bring suitcases in the house. Unpack outside or in the garage and directly put in washer if concerned.hth

Okay, I am starting to freak out!!!! We are leaving tomorrow and are staying at the DLH. What tower did you stay at? I guess it doesn't matter since they move the sheets around. I already packed my Lysol spray I ALWAYS spray down the entire room right when we enter. I'm itching already

true, ex has an exterminating company...many tales of peeps transporting bed bugs both to a resort & back home as an unwanted souviener.

he advised to always open luggage & spray with bug spray then stuff it in a garbage bag for a day or so...then unpack & wash when u return home

fyi, in '06 our villa @ the BC/WDW had "palmetto bugs-biggest roaches i've ever seen) scampering all over the wall one night when we returned back late & turned the light on .

Probably from some dim-bulb leaving the balcony slider open to the wooded area a few feet from the villas...too bad mgmt handled it poorly; had to insist on an exterminator coming in & spraying since there were no other rooms available.

it happens, as stated above...make sure you let mgmt knows.

supposedly the best way to determine if there are bed bugs is to look behind the headboard?

We stayed at DLH last week six nights and had no issues. I would agree to check the mattresses and headboards out good when you get there if you are concerned at all.

We always check the room when we first arrive for bed bugs. Check the beds (the mattress, between the mattress and the box spring, all the edges of the mattress and frame), the headboard, the curtains, the lamp shades, and even behind the picture frames! All places they like to hide! Not only do I look for them, but I also look for brown/reddish stains which is their "droppings". EWWW!!

But from what I heard they will usually bite you ALL over. Not just your legs. It's actually becoming a common problem because we can't use the same pesticides to kill them like we used to (it's been banned). It's also true that it can happen at the cleanest and nicest hotels. So it's good to always check. Only takes a few minutes and it's worth the peace of mind.
