Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Dave: What a great wedding location and story--I can remember the date, for sure, as it's one of my BF's birthday! :woohoo: I think military dress is very sharp, and there's no doubt that Erica was a beautiful bride. Also, it's very cool that your anniversary gift to each is other involves walking by each other's side over a LS, and enjoyable, D--very symbolic! :cloud9:

Howard: Oh, no! You're human! :scared1: And I thought you were a member of the Justice League. :lmao: I'm so sorry to hear about the hip flexor strain; I don't know that I've every had one (which is probably a good sign that I haven't). Thanks for all the information, and I know you're doing the right things to recovery quickly and safely. Congratulations for stopping before it became a more serious injury--very smart thinking, with an eye on those long-term goals! Just another reason you deserve groupies, IMO.

Aloha Jeff:
Abbreviated (why is that such a long word, meaning a shortened word?) from the weekly thread.
OMG! I'm going to use that joke whenever I can! Great news about your pain-free arch on your run! :woohoo: Did you know 19 was your lucky number before the lovely women came into your life?

Mike: I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the pain is simply residual, and that your next run reveals you to be fully recovered. It does sound like your new shoes are much, much better for you. Too back about your TP's side stitch, though. I assume this TP is the same one as for your tri? (You two cracked me up, at least in terms of your RR's description of your relationship.) Your theory about weight and the scale sounds so...healthy! I need to focus more on those things than the numbers! Or at least the numbers of my tape measure...

1) Don't sweat the petty things.

2) Don't pet the sweaty things...

Ewwww. But for some reason now I WANT to pet the sweaty things. :scared:

AmyK: Don't you just love getting miles in and running errands? I feel like a multitasker! And you're saving on gas, too! :cool1: Great news about working out your miles for ToT (big yay for seeing you at that one) and your RftC. I think you're spot on with using a 5K on the latter--it's a great time to establish your PR for the distance. In terms of computers, I'm an Apple gal myself and own a Macbook. I don't need the newer Macbook Air, but it's so pretty....

Maria: 6 days of scheduled workouts--and still counting! :cheer2: You sound as good as you feel! My weight fluctuates a lot daily, too, but I think my body just rebels against any movement. :lmao: So, you'll have some more physical activity jumping up and down during your family's cheering on the Olympians. That, and walking around Canobie Lake Park, a place I've never heard of. Take plenty of pics for us. Speaking of trips, I think your alone-time with DH at marathon weekend (well, sort of alone, as you'll be with us too) will be just lovely. I know you'll miss DS, but he needs to be in school and you'll enjoy your adults weekend.

Oh, and thanks for the anniversary wishes--I hadn't thought about my secret marriage getting in the way of others' well wishes. Glad I have my WISHmates to provide them! And yeah, I feel like such a celeb. Very Beyonce. :cool2: P.S. Wouldn't a class on Plum be cool? I did teach a class on Crime Fiction, but it didn't include Evanovich. I had one book by Sara Paretsky, and 9/10 students hated it. (It was "literary" the way Hammett or Chandler or Himes were. I told them, nicely, they were all genre snobs because that's what English departments taught them to be.)

Stacie: What a cool date for an anniversary. I usually judge cool, in part, by whether I could remember the date. I could remember yours, and it's associated with a party to boot! :goodvibes I have to admit, I'm envious of all those folks getting married on 8-8-08 for just such a reason. (Btw, we celebrate our anniversary on 8/14 because it's exactly 6 months past Valentine's day. I'm much more likely to remember the date that way. Yep, it's me who can't remember such things.

Good luck with doing your bike ride around town in this evening, and at a time of light car traffic. I like bike riding on Sundays for the same reasons you do. And let us know if you score any discounts for your rooms--enquiring minds want to know!

Cindy: Yay for joining the do-over club! Just another opportunity to revisit solid plans and make them even stronger, right? I'm soooo sorry to hear about your emotional turmoil. There is such pressure to do everything 110% of our efforts, isn't there? Big congratulations to you on the realization--with the help of our wise WISHers--what your priorities are. Your kids should be priorities, much more so than the boards. And don't forget your needs, too. We know you're here, and support you 100%. Basically, what Connie said (she's so eloquent).

Speaking of which, WTG on your 5K and 10 mile races. Big news on your placement in your AG and improving your speed. You're doing very well. And your WO/nutrition plans get a big thumbs-up, too! :thumbsup2

Oh, and thanks for taking the time to address everyone here, btw. (My plan B? Um....being really pissy about the whole thing. :rotfl: No, this is my preferred teaching gig. If it's a no go, I continue with my current work. Either way, I'm underemployed--this gig is just better.)

Connie: Happy birthday to your DD! :bday: Man, somebody robbed you at the cradle, didn't they?! I didn't know you used to be an instructor. Small world, eh? I really like the idea of celebrating two anniversaries, especially if you have an interesting reason for doing so. And a blind-date that turns into lifelong partners. Verrrrry interesting! :scratchin And I'm sure there are stories about you and DOOC first getting to know each other that are worth telling! ::yes:: Good luck with your training (2010, already?), and what's your trail race?

Tracey: Ooooh, high praise for DH. Right up there with chocolate. Wow! Great job with the 3 miles, which sounds like they were really tough. And to go back and do 2 tonight, plus crunches and push ups. Very motivated, you are! How do you feel about DS being in high school? (First year for him? Depends on the HS grade levels for school, I guess.)

Jeanne: I saw your thread on the EE medal and showed it to DOOD. He groaned, so who knows what that means? :confused3 It's good, I think. The race isn't filling, last time I checked, which is also good (for us). Just got the next disc of The Tudors. We'll be watching it soon--much more fun than the book Brideshead Revisited. (I understand the miniseries was a blast, though.) Tell your son that if I end up teaching these film classes I'll be using a clip of Children of Men, along with other films, to talk about the tracking shot. With Touch of Evil, of course. (He'll understand the comparison I think, even if you don't, and his reaction will tell me if it'll play with a younger generation.)

As for me: Thanks everyone for the well wishes on the anniversary and the job situation. I'm obviously happy about the former (and my secret marriage, Maria! :upsidedow)! And I'm okay with the latter--it's the nature of the non-tenure track academic gig, which I tend to forget. I left my tenure-track gig to move to Pgh, and had forgotten/surpressed this kind of instability. It's par for the course with many academic institutions. Doesn't make me less impatient, mind you...:rolleyes1 I'm glad I have you all to talk to about it, because that means I'm less likely to say something impolitic to the wrong people. You're the right people to say something impolitic to! :woohoo:

Today was running. I'd intended to add some XT to the session, but was feeling kind of wiped, so just did my 3.5 + cool down. I might add Pilates tonight. We'll see what DOOD's in the mood for. ;) There is the possibility for an informal observation of our anniversary, you know. (I was going to say small, but thought you'd all take that the wrong way. Shame on you! :rotfl2:)

Did you know 19 was your lucky number before the lovely women came into your life?

Yes, I started wearing 19 on my football jersey back in high school, about 7 years before I met my wife.

And Happy Anniversary to you and the DOODster.

Pet the sweaty things, LOL, that's hilarious.

My friend who sometimes shows up for the running group. I always ask her if she wants a hug from me after my run, since I haven't seen her in a while. She takes one look at my sweaty body and says "Hell No!".

I tease her and ask her if she earned her ice cream that day. She usually says no.

Hi everyone! I feel like a slug. I did nothing today. Ugh. I am resting my right thigh as ordered by so many nice and caring people around the WISH boards.

The pain I felt when running (or attempting to) is gone. I have a lingering uncomfortable area in what feels like the back of my leg in the hamstring area. I am a bit confused by it all. I used "The Stick" on the back and front of my leg for a while tonight and felt no great relief or benefit. There was no pain or pressure caused due to the use of "The Stick" so I think I am getting better. I haven't iced it because it doesn't hurt, it isn't swollen or tender. I guess I am doing the RE and not the entire RICE like so many smart people advocate.

I am going to play it very cautious and not do anything beyond walking tomorrow. I want to get some miles in just leisurely strolling around where I usually walk. A mile is a mile in my book. Plus I won't feel as if I am doing "nothing".

I won't plan on trying to run/jog on it (unless it feels 100%) until the weekend. It is supposed to cool down over the weekend and that might be a good time to get out. I am hoping this slightly wierd feeling goes away in my leg and I will be back to my old (and wiser) self.

I will be looking into proper stretching techniques for the thigh/legs prior to a run so I can look to avoid this in the future. Looking back I think I know what may have caused it. The stationary bike I used at the YMCA had a pedal that was rubbing and slowing down the progress I was making. It created drag that I had to push extra hard to overcome. I think that stressed it a bit and then the run the next morning "twanged" it.

Thanks again for the advice everyone!

:grouphug:

Howard

Tracey, Maria and Debra, I have been accused often of being an incureable romantic. My first date with Erica:

I had just returned from the US where I had gone back to sign divorce papers with my first wife. So when we went out I took her to this lighthouse that overlooked a huge cliff. It was night, wild waves crashing against the cliff, the light from the light house giving the night a sureal look. We went to the edge and held hands while I throw my old wedding ring into the sea. We began our new life together that night and we have been together since.

Every day has been an adventure and we have accomplished some amazing things together.

When we met she was the change girl in the casino of the NCO Club. I asked her what her dreams were and she said to be a nurse. So when we returned to the US she enrolled in nursing school and bedcame an RN. A very very good one to. It's easy to accell when you are living your dreams.

But anyway. Back to the business.

Howard, glad you are feeling better, that is one of the injuries that plague walkers since our stride starts at the hip.

Cindy wellcome back.

I took an easy day today as taper for saturday. Two miles on the treadmill followed by upper body weights and then stretching and calistetics.

Power lunch today, big can of campbells veggie soup with a can of drained tuna and a heaping spoon of medium hot salsa added.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Good morning meaners. Forgive me for not responding to everyone but I have severely fallen off this thread and am not attempting to pull myself back up on this quickly moving wagon!!! :goodvibes

Debra: Belated anniversary wishes to you and DOOD. I hope it was a happy one and you did something small :lmao: or random whichever!! Any October ressies yet?

Howard: I did nothing yesterday too. Do not feel alone. I am not resting on purpose though, just lazy!!:rolleyes1

Everyone else: :flower3: I still love you all and miss being on here terribly.

From the Great North Woods, well, I got my photos from the Beach to Beacon race in my email yesterday. Not happy, not happy and  . I think I look very big through the belly and hips (or bigger than I want to anyway). DH tells me I am crazy, I get the "what is wrong with you" from him. :sad2: Sad, sorry state I am in. I am working on a revamp of my weight routine and my goal is to like my photos from ToT in October. I did try to tell myself it was the junk in my pockets of my skirt but, well, I can only convince myself of so much. In other news, it is raining here, endlessly, and 60 degrees and yucky in general. I am banned to the TM through the weekend. :sad2: Another sad state of mind. I am having to fight with the principal of my son's new school for a teacher that is acceptable for a very active, smart and shy young man. :sad2: My overcompetitive SIL ran 6.2 the other day in :54:55 just to spite me. :sad2: But, today is the NB sale start and maybe there will be a bright spot on the horizon for me. I am in definite need of a leaner meaner pick me up....or maybe just a session on the Hooch porch...:confused3

Love to the meaners!!! :grouphug:

Lisa dear are we going to all have to come up there and remind you how cute you are and how much you inspire us with your workout habits. You sound like you need a hug really bad.

We are getting some cooler weather this weekend also. Not were we have to turn the heat on yet but much better than this close to a 100 degrees everyday. My race day saturday will be 58 degrees which is great since with all the hills this one has a break in the weather will be wonderfull.

School started back here this week also, which means I get to dodge cars as I walk past the high school in the mornings when the crazed parents are dropping their kids off. I have been nearly hit there many times.

Everyone have an awesome day and those with aches and ouches feel better.

Leaner Panda:hippie:

[ We'll see what DOOD's in the mood for. ;) There is the possibility for an informal observation of our anniversary, you know. (I was going to say small, but thought you'd all take that the wrong way. Shame on you! :rotfl2:)

Now, Debra, of course we would take it the wrong way. Look at the company you're hanging with here.:lmao: On a sweeter and more innocent note;) I'm both saddened and excited for DS to start high school. He'll be a freshman and he's thrilled to begin competing in Cross Country. But, I still see him as my baby and I don't feel like I'm old enough to have a 15 year old. Plus, I know the challenges that high school brings and I would like to keep him cocooned away from all the yuck. He's a great kid though with a good head on his shoulders and he'll be fine. He'll graduate from hs the same year that my littlest guy graduates from kindergarten.:scared1:
Dave...lucky Erica.:cloud9:
Lisa...we're all so hard on ourselves. I bet that if you posted a pic we'd all tell you how great you look, and we'd truly mean it. I get that, "what's the matter with you" from DH all the time. I think he feels thankful to have only one female in the house.:) Take care, we're thinking about you and missing you.
Howard....Oh, we love "The Stick". DS got one a couple of weeks ago and it really makes a difference.
Jeff...Tako and biting between the eyes...ewww!
All other leaners...
I did get the extra 2 in last night on the TM. A slow time for me, but I'm with Howard in the "miles are miles". Followed up with 100 crunches and 60 push-ups. Today is a nice Pilates day and a walk with DH tonight.
Take care all and have a blessed day!

Hi Everyone!

Cindy Glad to see you on here again! It sounds like your races went really well! You are fast! :cheer2: I am also on my July do-over as far as goals go. I think everyone will do better in August! :goodvibes

Stacie A cinco de mayo anniversary?? So cool! :cool1:

Debra I am the multitasking queen!!! I   the macbook air! Unfortunately my laptop is only 2 years old and running great. DH hates laptop keyboards so he really wants a desktop. I am hoping to talk him into an imac.

Dave Such a great story about your first date! :goodvibes

Lisa Sorry it is so rainy up your way! I have family camping in Maine this week (they have been there since last Wed.) and I think they are about ready to pack it in and head home because of all the rain. I hate every picture taken of myself. There are very few pictures of myself that I really like. So you are not alone in that. :grouphug:

Connie,Jeff,Tracey,Jeanne,Howard,Maria

Thanks for everyone's good thoughts and PD for DD! I hesitated even getting this test done, but in the end decided it was good to know if there was something wrong that might make her more prone to these infections because it is easily fixed. Another story about DD..I caught her stuffing cat food in her mouth last night! :scared1: :scared1: I was making dinner and she was crawling around the kitchen and when I turned around there she was eating cat food! She thought it was hilarious :lmao: :lmao: but quickly started crying when I started trying to remove the cat food from her mouth. I think maybe some of the cat food looked like some of the toddler puffs/cereal I give her??:confused3 :confused3

I did w4D2 last night! It went well although I went a bit too soon after eating. Again I covered about 1.7ish miles during intervals. I ended up doing 4 miles last night. I planned on doing an out and back kind of route, but didn't start the back part until I finished intervals, which with warm up was 2 miles! So I had a SUPERlong cool down walk. I probably could have jogged some of it, but decided to stick with walking. I also had to run some hills (a switchback type ramp to get up to the pedestrian walkway over the road). It would be a good place for hill sprints if I ever got the motivation to do those! :lmao: :lmao:

That is about all from super hot sweaty humid Florida! pilates tonight. I am off work tomorrow! :yay: :woohoo:

What kind of crunches do you do? all one type?

Amy,

Just about every parent has some sort of story like yours. Both my girls got into the dog biscuts we keep near our back sliding door. They both ended up with fresh breath, and a shiny coat. Plus they now know how to sit up, roll over, and shake hands before getting fed. :lmao:

Bumping this section from the weekly thread:

I saw this article, must have been written for the WISH TEAM.

COOL OFF WITH A GUILT-FREE TREAT

It's hot out there, all right. Luckily, you have the AC cranked at home, and your office is so pumped with arctic air that you dress for work like you would for the ski slopes.

But how can you cool down from the inside out when you're in the heat, building sand castles with the kids at the beach or grilling burgers for 20 of your closest friends in the backyard?

Eat something cold, of course. There are plenty of summer coolers that will keep you refreshed without causing belly bloat.

Try a frosty from Wendy's rather than a shake. On the boardwalk, have a heart-healing coconut shaved ice instead of a banana split. Or try frozen yogurt with fresh fruit, like fiber-full papaya, if you can get it.

Staying active will help keep your weight in balance if you do indulge on the sweet, cold stuff. There are plenty of activities perfect for the summer: Boost metabolism and burn calories by going for a swim, hit the trails on a bike, or woo her with a hike. If you're looking for something more low-key, beat stress with some hot yoga on the beach.

You'll sweat out that ice cream in no time.

Just a :car: tonight...I just got home from my church meeting, and I have to eat. I am starving! I am officially punting on the bike tonight --- but, tomorrow is my TM/weights day, so I'm going to add a bike workout, too!

It might be cheating a little on my chart, but I'm calling it being flexible. I'm not skipping the workout, I'm just postponing it.

I hope to have a real post tomorrow. Everyone hang in there and know that I'm thinking of you, and you are inspiring me to gitr done!

Maria :goodvibes

Where is everyone??? Hopefully everyone is off doing all kinds of running, biking, walking, swimming, resting or whatever!

20 minutes of pilates for me tonight with DD. she didn't try to climb on me until I got to the open leg rocker.(i think that's what it's called). Also did 2 miles walking around the 'hood. DD fell asleep. Now I am relaxing with my second glass of sangria. :drinking1 :drinking1

w4d3 for me tomorrow. probably on the TM. I will be home tomorrow with DD :woohoo: and I need to control my pace a little better so that will be my best option. I have a hair appointment at 5 to touch up my highlights. Still going blonde this time. I am thinking maybe going reddish for TOT.

We're probably going to do CSR for TOT. I am on a mission to stay at least one night at all WDW resorts and this would be the last moderate on my list.

We may head to sea world this weekend. Our blackout on our FL res passes to WDW isn't lifted until next thursday. I need a theme park fix!

Jeff I talked to a couple of my coworkers about the cat food incident and sure enough, both of them had a story relating to their kids eating cat and/or dog food!

Off to refill my sangria glass!

Cheers,
Amy

Good early a.m. Meaners. I just had to check in with my favorite peeps on the board this morning!! Thanks for all your loving support. Anyone who wants to take the time to see the pics, they are at asiorders.com, beach to beacon, bib #3169. I am learning to deal.

I guess I knew I had some toning to do and that it was time for a shake up in the routine. I had been working very diligently on my shoulders and kind of let the rest of it go. Time is such a commodity that I have to pick and choose. Well, now I choose my midsection to concentrate on. I just need to tweak my routine a little and add some abduction/adduction work to the lower body and stop copping out on my 15 minute pilates routine and get back to the 30 minute one that AmyBeth gave me. Pure lazy and it definitely showed!!

So, color me with renewed vengence toward my health!! I am definitely adopting the goal of finding my 6-pack (not Mic Ultra as usual) and will give definite consideration to the belly piercing. That or a cool tat, not sure which yet. I want to be proud of my pictures from ToT!! I mean the pictures of Debra and I cuz she IS going and she IS running with me.....where is the strongarm smilie???

Sorry this post is all about me but I guess yesterday's was too so sorry on both accounts. You are all a source of strength and I turn to you to watch my back on these things. If we all work together, we can attain new and improved bodies for 2009. So, what is your goal for 2009???

Good mornin' lean meaners!
Amy...yep, my kiddos have eaten dogfood and dog treats. I've been doing combinations of regular crunches, side crunches, and bicycle cruches. I figure that if I mix it up, I should hit all those ab muscles.:)

Maria...I'm a postponer, too. I just didn't have it to get the Pilates in last night so I'm putting the DVD in right after I get off the laptop.

Lisa...I looked you up. See, I thought you looked great! Makes me realize that I need to get a running skirt to match my wish shirt.;) Keep running strong, chickie!

Jeff...do you see the back roads on the 1/2 as well?

So now, I've got Pilates followed by a 4 miler on tap for today! My daddy is taking all the kids (well not the little guy) on a tour and then out for lunch. So I'll be able to get it in without too many interruptions. We're headed out of town for the weekend. Have a great one all!:yay:  :yay:

Good morning!

Tracey - When DD32 was only about 3, we were visiting my parents at their house over Christmas. She kep begging my mother for those bite sized Snickers bars and mom kept handing them over. A couple days later I went to the huge sack of dog food to get the dog some food and there in the sack was 20 Snicker bars in their wrappers. She had been trading dog food for candy bars. :rotfl: I actually caught her at it, later that day! And yes, just like Jeff said, "she ended up with fresh breath, and a shiny coat. Plus she now knows how to sit up, roll over, and shake hands before getting fed." Gotta love a kid who swaps, so the doggie won't be hungry, too!!!

Lisa- So glad you are feeling your spirit once again!! Hard days just seem to be just so dang hard! -- My goals: 1) avoid shoulder surgery or have it immediately! 2) Participate in the Palo Duro Canyon Trail race 20K in October, besting my previous time. 3) Begin trainning for the a full marathon. 4) Do the Little Rock half in March 5) Do the OkC or Texas Full in April. 6) train for time and distance to do the Dopey in 2010! And other stuff!! :rotfl:

Amy- Training with a baby is like having a fun little weight!

Maria - Flexibility is the best way to do what you need to do and feel good about it. You go, girl! We love hearing about your triumphs!

Debra - A small anniversary celebration? Just how small we talin'? Oh wait that wasn't what you meant, was it??? :rotfl: I hope you had a wonderfully good time. When the DOOC and I met on the blind date, I felt like I was doing a job interview! Guess I got the job! :confused3

Jeff- How funny we have the same anniversary! It's a great day!!!

Howard - I hope you feel better soon!

Everyone else I missed, please stay safe and make a great weekend.

Well, we have the grandkids this weekend. We will be seeing Wall-E and staying out of the summer rains. Y'all make a great weekend!

See ya! - Connie

Hi everyone!

I have not run/XT'ed or anything mildly strenuous since Tuesday when my three miler turned into a 3 mile walk. I have not had any pain, tenderness or soreness for the last two days. So, I think I am good for a trial run of 3 (easy ones) tomorrow. If that works out well, I'll run again on Sunday (possibly 5 miles). However, if I feel a twinge of any sort on Saturday, I'll scale it back to a walk and continue to rest it.

I will be researching recommended stretching exercises for the thigh tonight and make sure I am prepared for the 3 miles tomorrow morning.

I'll post an update then, hopefully a good one.

Enjoy your weekends everyone! HAPPY TRAINING!

:grouphug:

Howard

Jeff...do you see the back roads on the 1/2 as well?

Tracey,

The half at WDW basically goes from the EPCOT Parking lot, along the main roads to the Race Track, through Disney World parking lot, past the Ticket & Transportation Center, the road past the Contemporary hotel, through the Magic Kingdom.

Then you go back pretty much on the same route, then backstage at EPCOT, and around the fountain, past Spaceship Earth, and to the finish line.

For the full marathon there are a few deviations. You go through EPCOT first, then after the Magic Kingdom, you head out on the true backroads past the sewage treatment plant (wonderful aromas around mile 15!!!), through Animal Kingdom, close to Wide World of Sports, through Hollywood Studios, down near Boardwalk hotel, around the Yacht & Beach Club, and back through the World Showcase in EPCOT to the finish.

Sounds like alot, but ask anyone on the WISH team that's done it. Great memories, every inch of the way. :thumbsup2

I just realized that I meant to share the cobbler recipe and forgot... !

3/4 - 1 cup of sugar
2 cups of fruit

Mix together and set aside.

1 cube of butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup self rising flour
3/4 cup milk

Melt the butter in the pan you plan to bake in. In the meantime, mis sugar flour and milk into a batter. Pour over the melted butter and top with fruit. Bake very hot 400 degrees until done.

Self rising flour:

1 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt.

I refuse to pay for self rising flour!

you can substitute Splenda (3/4 only) and Margerine or Smart balance (I use the 1/2 and !/2) but it really is much better when made the old fashioned way. Generally, I use the Smart Balance butter in cubes and regular sugar.
