Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Hi lean meaners.

Beth welcome back, are you a nurse also? Erica is a CCU/ICU nurse.

I just made one of my famous power lunches, if it doesn't make me sick it should be very nutritious. Pumpernickle brean with a slab ov salmon on top, covered with wild rice and topped with medium hot salsa. Yum.

Easy 4 mile walk today since I had issues with daughters jeep to deal with. AAA is wonderfull when broken car is in the driveway and needs to be at the repair shop.

Cute little one you have there Amy.

Have an awesome day everyone.

AmyKab...What a difference a year makes! Hey, what were those skirts priced at....I like the Champion ones from Target and would be interested in a couple more of them. Thanks.

Stacie Sorry to hear the doctor was less than helpful. :furious: Once you get the results back from the tests, I would probably look for another Dr., and would keep doing so until you find one you are happy with.

Cindy Your 5K time totally rocks! :woohoo: :yay:

Tracey I can't believe how much more stuff I have to get ready for traveling with DD vs when it was just me and DH! :scared1: FYI on the skirts:my regular target did not have them clearance but the super one did. Weird.

Debra The tomato salad you described is my favorite salad EVER! I order it anytime I see it when we eat out, and also make it at home! I have a major fresh mozzarella infatuation! :lovestruc

Lisa My parents drove with us ONCE to WDW from VT. That was the last time. We flew everytime after that. They also drove cross country with us once too. They were brave!

Everyone else, :yay:   !!

Good Day Lean Meaners!!! How is everyone today?

Panda... Sounds like you had a great workout yesterday! That's fantastic!!!

Tracey...How was your run today? That shark looked like a sand shark to me, but I'm no expert. I've only caught a few down at the coast. It's great for boys that age. They are so into sharks and stuff. How did your run on the track go today?

Lisa... A picnic. Hmmm.. Sounds like it could be fun? :confused3 I know it's irritating when things throw our schedule off though. Thanks for the thoughts on the doctor visit. Your are absolutely correct! 10 min every hour for a smoke break! Wow...are they encouarging unhealthy habits or what? Where I work there is no set time for breaks and all. One of my co-workers used to go that often. I sit, sit, sit all day. I dare anyone to say anything about healthy 15 min breaks. hmph.

Connie...Yes I know. No more 8 hours food hiatus. I hope you have enjoyed yoru pilates today.

Beth...Glad you had a good time in Orlando. Great job on getting your miles in while you were on vacation! That is great!

AmyK. How much they grow in that first year. Each is amazing, but to me, the first is just so cool. They go from doing nothing, sleeping, eating pooping all the time to having their own little personalities, feeing themselves, crawling, walking...Such huge development in that first year! Sounds like DH withdrawing his name is a good thing. I would hate to be away form months at a time.

For me...On my lunch break today I went to TJ Maxx and picked up a Pilates Mat and Exercise Ball. I plan to use these on my 15 min breaks. The floor here is pretty hard! I also read that if you use the ball for 20-30 min a day as your chair it can help with your posture and strengthen your abs. Apparently you subcontiously engage your abs more to help balance yourself when on the ball vs. sitting in your chair? Anyone have any takes on this? Is just sitting on the ball or boucing up down beneficial at all? I'll probably use it for some ab work or glute work or something during my 15 min breaks.

So...I think that's about it. A big shout out to everyone else!

Stacie

I have a non-exercise story about the exercise ball. I used to sit on one during the last trimester of my pregnancy, for some reason it just felt really good and took some of load off my back. Anyhow, I am pretty sure that sitting on one of those things is what caused my water to break finally. I don't have much other experience with it. I tried to do some Ab work with it a couple months ago and just felt like I had a really hard time balancing. I suppose you probably get used to it though.

Stacey According to ACE (American Council on Exercise) Sitting on a ball doesn't help much, if at all. It doesn't really engage your abs in any significant way differently from a chair. Doesn't burn more calories, you just become adapt at sitting on ball...very quickly. You can do just as well sitting up straight in your chair and praciticing posture there. But if you like sitting on the ball, then by all means feel free to do so.:thumbsup2

Dave: Good technician or not, I can see how you would inspire all the men in your squadron! :goodvibes But remind me not to let you near any of my power tools. :rotfl2: And big yay for being able to do calf raises again--that a good sign. And isn't it interesting that you (we) get sore from too much sitting. There was a time when I wouldn't have believed it, but it's so true.

Wendy: Better-living-through-chemistry? Ooooh, my college days! It was fun while it lasted, but now I'm like you--prefer that lifestyle change. I can totally see you as a cougar, btw. Welcome to the pride. :rotfl: Oh, and I just have to tell you that getting up at 3 a.m. to get your run in....that's truly committed to your lifestyle. :worship:

Lisa: So it looks like you're exceeding your goal times pretty frequently AND having runs where that goal pace is one you can maintain for longer and longer distances. :woohoo: I'm so happy for you!!! I swear, I'll get on the RW plan eventually--I haven't asked DOOD how it's working for him (or if he's really following it), but I will.

I'm even happy for your picnic., Dick Dastardly! I realize you're not looking forward to it, but I'm willing to bet is was more fun than you thought it would be, once you got there. Hopefully yours was filled with fresh foods and heathy options, not just stuff dripping in various sauces. Speaking of which, your description of garden goodies made my mouth water....

Connie: Oh, now I'm impressed with you. See, the housekeeping schedule will never go on my board. Some things I am willing to ignore. But like you, I like the planning stages and am working on follow-through. I don't really believe you, though, given your description of learning another program as back-up!

I love your and Wendy's responses to Cindy with regards to the all-or-nothing approach and to Stacy's doctor. And I didn't know the ACE conclusions about the exercise ball. Interesting, as I know it's been promoted for use in offices. I used one, and I agree with the assessment. But it did help me think about posture more--good for me!

Stacie: Wow, you really had an active day on Tuesday--that's more proof that doctor doesn't know beans about your capabilities. You're right about needing to eat throughout the day and to hydrate--but you know that. As you say, "lesson learned.: (I'm sorry you learned it that way, though.)

I actually used an exercise ball in my old office. Truthfully, I didn't notice much with my abs when I was just sitting. But I did use it to do ab work and stretching while it was there. I'm not entirely sure it was worth the constant comments I endured about the ball being in my office.

Tracey: A cougar is ageless. It's all in the attitude, baby. Purrrrrr.

Mmm, cucumber salad. I'm adding some summer salads to my menu, and this sounds tasty. I'm doing the same thing--trying to do speed work before I start training for January. I'm not sure I like doing it, but I feel it's good for me. (I like eating salads, though, and they're good for me.) For the record, you've now made me want to pet a shark. Who knew this would fascinate me? :confused3 How did your TM run go? It's humid here, too, with expected storms every day for the next week!

Beth: I'm glad you're back and hope the conference was useful and even fun! As for eating, you're back on track. Plus, I'm sure you were careful in your carb-eating. And sooooo consistent with the WOs. You and Nancy make a good team that way, I'm sure. Great tip about snack packing--and with the airlines' ever-changing fee structures, we might really have very little choice if we want to avoid exorbitant costs. (Good for me, but annoying.)

AmyK: Wow, it's amazing how Delena has grown. That first year goes by quickly!!!! I'm also going to say congratulations on you and your DH making the decision not to pursue the CO job. It does sound like the sacrifices, especially with the family, would be too much. And you definitely want to have DH around these early years with Delena! Plus, there's ToT to look forward to now. :woohoo: I hope you feel well for your trip--it would be a pity to go out of town and be sick the entire time. PD for you!!

Yea, fresh mozzarella! Mmmm. I love summer, if for no other reason than there are so many great greens out there, with yummy (or is that yummylicious, Mike?) toppings.

As for me: Well, I did weigh myself and am up a pound. I'm not surprised, what with the living single, but need to get on that pound before it becomes two, especially since supposedly I'm trying to lose and not maintain my weight. I did 4 miles on the TM tonight, as I got a late start to my day. Looks like they're putting in new ARC machines--at least I know where some of my monthly fee goes. :goodvibes

Other thing of note, an observation really. DOOD and I send each other little packages while he's away (or while I am). What does it say that I send him things like a yoga DVD or a World Soccer magazine, and he sends me things like a Starbucks card?

Good morning Lean Meaners. I am having trouble getting started this morning, anyone else???? I think I have inherited Debra's sleep deficiency syndrome. :rotfl:

Dave:  Good morning sweet panda. How is Erica these days. Calf raises....no can do here. I have Popeye calves. I had them when I was body building too. I did try a little race walking during my 4 miles yesterday and I can understand why fast walkers should do calf raises though. Mine are sore today!!

Connie: I had not read the ACE findings on the ball. I know that it is prescribed therapy for balance and it does relieve pressure on your back. I hear it is great for finding your "seat" if you are a competitive rider (horses boys, get you mind out of the gutter). I just use mine for pilates.

Beth: Yay for Beth being back and yay for the wagon tip. I always pack snack bags for the kidlets when we travel. They would rather have the chips/peanuts passed out but there is never enough. One tip is not to pack your kidlets anything "gummy" like worms, etcetera. They confiscated them. Go figure. I also like that you were able to keep carbs under control and exercise too while on vaca even if you did not get any WDW time.

Amykab: What a cutie!!! Love the cake shovage...shades of...well never mind. First birthdays are awesome. Come to think of it, until they can pick out their own theme, cake, favors, friend, etcetera, birthday parties are great!!!! YAY AMY IS COMING TO TOT WITH US!!!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :cool1: :cool1: :woohoo: :woohoo: Did you notice we are under 4 months. Toooo exciting!!!

Stacie: Good for you picking up your new office accessories. I don't think anyone should say anything about 15 minute exercise breaks. We are actually required to take 15 minute stretch breaks. Otherwise we probably would never get up from our desks!! :rolleyes1 Maybe you will find others who want to partake in your new break!!!!

Everyone else: I hope you have a stellar weekend planned. Did anyone see Vic and Bill kicking around. Apparently they got lost again....:confused3

From the Great North Woods...the picnic was as bad as I imagined. Water balloon game, sports bra, white tee shirt...yep you can use the gutter on that one. I did not play that game and the fitness basket was snagged by the winner. So, I was on full boycot. Hamburgers and hot dogs on white rolls, mucho pasta salad dripping in oil and dressing, desert table full of decadance. I ate before I went. I did have some dessert that was strawberries and light whipped cream frozen. That was a treat. I also found some veggies, hummus and some fruit salad. Lucky thing I had eaten prior.

In other news, my DD13s phone had gone blank so I rushed on my way to the picnic to the Verizon store to see about a replacement. Turned out, I was eligible for an upgrade so I now am the proud owner of a Blackberry Pearl. I had them transfer her info onto my old phone and gave that to her. She was so happy to have her phone back, she did all the laundry for me!!! :faint: Then, she plugged the phone in and it went blank. I think there is a charger issue but the phone is useless and now I am headed back to the Verizon store.....again....for an EnV which is what she really, really, really wants to have. Chaching......

I did get my run in, I am happy to say. I do like the RW plan and the scheduling is working for me. I ran around the 1/4 mile track next to the ballfield which, BTW, is nearly as boring as the TM except for being able to see the other people using the track and dodging said people. Here are my mile times:
1-10:35:93
2-9:41:64
3-9:53:54
4-13:29:40 (I ran and walked this lap as my feet were burning and it was 85 degrees outside--not bad for a nonracewalker. I think I actually saw 13:30 on my pace once!!)

All in all, a 10:40 mpm average which is very acceptable. I am finding that by following this plan, my speed is increasing without my really thinking about it which is a good thing. I also discovered that my lack of motivation was two-fold, mourning the loss of the 5K PR and not having anything in the near future to train for. So, I am turning my attention to the 10K in August. I have some friends running in it also and I would like to finish waaaay before them :cool2: and in about 60 minutes-ish. So I have a new goal and something to look forward to. Debra, maybe that is your issue too???

Anyway, have a great weekend Lean Meaners. I am off the boards until Monday unless I can figure out internet access on my new little friend. I would not count on that though, I have to read the book and play with DS6 and make sure we are all fooded and watered etcetera. Not much time for anything. I am bringing my PT books though and may be able to get a little more done on that. So, what's up for the Lean Mean weekend ahead?????? :hyper:

Good mornin' Lean Meaners!

AmyKab....yep, it's amazing how much you have to pack for your kids. We found that on those first trips that it's key to have a gallon of milk in a cooler in the car. As long as our boys had full milk cups they were happy.:) Thanks for the info on the skirts--I think that I'll swing by our Target and see if they have any on clearance. Sounds like a good decision for your family in DH deciding not to pursue the CO job. That would be alot of time apart. I know that many families survive that way, but you have to choose what's best for your family.

Stacie...I'm not sure about the exercise ball. I have one that I sit on to do bicep curls and I've tried other exercies on it. It's definitely takes more concentration to sit on it than it does on the bench or chair. I actually used one similar to it in labor--I'm not sure if it was to take your mind off the pain or just to try to be more comfortable. I think it's ironic that Amy used it when she was pregnant and her water broke. So, if you don't use it now, then keep it for the future.:) I ended up running on the TM yesterday, it was boring but I got r' done.

Debra...so happy that I've inspired you, but to pet a shark?:rotfl: Actually, it was pretty cool. The TM run was okay, definitely nothing inspiring. I think it's very romantic that you and DOOD send gifts back and forth. I love "little gifts", they're my favorites! I think your gift choices sound perfect for DOOD, and in turn, he wants to treat you with a little decadence. Let us know what you get next. It's a great way to stay connected.

Lisa....Yay:cool1: for the new phone! Pooey on DD phone going blank 2x! We haven't broken down for DS14 and bought him a phone yet, but I think we need to before he starts HS. Speaking of that he turns 15 today and we're going to let him take the test for his learner's permit.:scared1: No really, he's responsible, it's just a little nerve wracking! Oooooo, sports bra, white Tshirt, water...smart move in abstaining, but dog gone it, you could've won a fitness basket! Did you miss out on anything good? Are you out of town for a sporting event for your kidlets?

Mike, Vic, Dave, Connie, Cindy, Beth,Amy, and anyone else I missed...Have a great day and a wonderful weekend.

Today is DS b-day...send PD as he'll be starting to drive! It's also DH and my 16th wedding anniversary (DS was born on our first anniversary). And tomorrow is DH b-day (he'll be 40)! So it's a weekend of celebrating for us.:yay:
I ran on the TM yesterday as it's so humid here and there is lots of flooding on nearby roads. So many people around MO are flooded out of their homes. It's so sad. My usual river trail is completely covered.:(
I could've ran on the track yesterday but DS cross country team was running the stadium stairs and I thought it would be better to go home. I went about 2 1/2 miles and the time was around 26 minutes, nothing too fabulous, but okay and I got it in. I'm hoping to take a long walk today. I feel really sluggy today again, I know it's a hydration issue--it's hard keeping up with the weather changes and knowing I have to increase my water intake. Have a great day all!

Hi Everyone!

I have had a hard time getting onto the DISboards this morning! Anyone else? At first I thought maybe work had blocked it :furious: :scared1: but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I am finally have us packed and pretty much ready to go. I am working my friday off until 3 pm so I can save a vacation day and we should be on the road by 5 pm. I seem to be fighting off this little cold, so that is good news~! :woohoo:

Got on the scale this morning, I had to know where I was at before vacation...Down 5 lbs since the last time I weighed myself a few weeks ago! :woohoo: So I'm losing 1-2 per week, which while not super fast, I think it is good. I am within a 1/2 pound of meeting my pre vacation weight goal and within 5 of my wedding weight! Our anniversary is tomorrow, 5 years already!

Question for those of you who get on the scale: do you weigh yourselves at the same time, same day all the time? I can not handle seeing my everyday fluctuations in weight,so I do it every week or two, usually in the AM, but not always on the same day of the week.

I got my patriotic shirt for my 5K next friday! My running shoes don't really match though..I hope to pick up a 2nd pair of shoes while we're up there. I'd like to have 2 in rotation.

I am super excited for TOT! I love  that time of year in FL! Another goal to keep me on track. I am also going to sign up for a RFTC 10K in early October. And 6 months, 2 weeks until marathon weekend! :woohoo: :cool1:

My july goal..It was hard to decide since we're on vacation for 2 weeks out of the month, but I am going to go with making a planned workout schedule and sticking to it. I have been doing pretty good with runs, but REALLY need to do XT and stretching more. So, I think my schedule will look like this. Obviously will be modified for 1/2 training in a couple months and for vacations. I figure for vacations I should aim for 3 or 4 walks/runs/hikes, whatever I can fit in. I REALLY wanted to do a food goal for July, but I knew it would be hard with vacation and I also need to do a bit more research so I can make a plan.

M-C25K + (extra mile walking if I feel like it)
T-XT/Pilates
W-C25K + (extra mile walking if I feel like it)
R-XT/Pilates
F-C25K+ (extra mile walking if I feel like it)
S-Rest or LR
S-Rest or LR

So everyone, Have a good week, GL:wizard: to anyone doing races over the next couple weekends! Happy 4th!

AmyKab...What a difference a year makes! Hey, what were those skirts priced at....I like the Champion ones from Target and would be interested in a couple more of them. Thanks.

they were 13.00 (regular 20.00). I went to another target yesterday to try and find my size (of course they didn't have it), and they did not have them on clearance at that target. It seems to be hit or miss. can't figure out why some stores had them clearanced and some did not.:confused3 And it's not like the stores that had them only had one on clearance (like something that was damaged), there were a whole bunch.

I did get a pair of champion shorts there though for $2.48! :cool1: :woohoo: And I ended up with an all black running skirt (full price) since it was what they had in my size. Target seems to be clearancing alot of clothes in general right now, so you just need to patience and time to pick through stuff.

way more info then you probably needed! :)

Howdy Meaners!!

Debra You don't believe me??? :confused3 Of course I have trouble with follow through, that's WHY I need a couple ways to do a thing, if one doesn't work I can jump to the other and be done with it and then I don't have to think about it because frankly, I won't think a thing about it again either way! :rotfl2: -- Did you notice the workout schedule was at the TOP of the board??? But I have to keep up with the house work. I have the DOOC who believes that things are put away when they are placed on any flat surface. If I don't stay ahead of him, then I have a very messy confusing house! And he is 6'3", I am not nearly that tall and it takes a step ladder to retrieve stuff and put it away!

Amy Have so much fun! The baby is adorable! Enjoy her!

Lisa Sorry the picnic was so awful! Glad you made it home safe and sound. I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy every second of it.

BETH Welcome back. I am sure you got a lot of the conference, but I would have cheated at least once and gone off to play a bit. You have my admiration! :worship:

Amy I weigh when I take a notion and I try to do it at the same time when I do it. I heard that makes a difference. I know that weght fluctuates throughout the day with things we eat, the amount of sweat we lose, the amount of fluid we take in, the bathroom breaks, etc. It all changes things.

Lisa and Debra There is this really cool area on ACE fitness where they test things, new equipment, uses for equipment, clothing, etc. They did a test on the stability ball and determined that it did make a difference sitting on one for about 15 minutes, but as soon as the muscles became adept and learned how to do it, the participants were able to sit on a ball without any extra exertion than in a regular chair. The test was done when it was such a trend to try sitting on the ball in offices.

Tracey Happy Birthday! I say happy birthday to you, because truthfully birthdays are really the sport of moms. We did/do all the work and the kid gets the present????? What's up with that???? :lmao:

From the Great Plains atop the Cap Rock, I did a 6 mile walk this morning. Another woman who lives in my infintestimal town and the only other person that actually trains ...ever, caught up with me and we had a nice visit as we completed the mileage. It was nice to have some company for a change. She is a runner but slowed to walk with me, I slowed so that she didn't have to walk so hard to keep up with me! :cool1:

EVERYONE! Have a great weekend! Make it healthy! -- Connie

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a great Saturday morning!

Figured I better stop by and check in. All is well.

I'll catch up after I get the lawn mowed. Oh boy!!

Take care.

:)

Meaners!

59 mile bike, 5.3 mile run today for me.

I need to nap,but I have to go check on my mom (knee surgery) and MIL (chemo and radiation), then take hunny to her book club, take the kids to Heritage Fest (local carnival/taste of Downers Grove), take hunny tonight to see one of the bands at Heritage Fest...then I get to nap.

And tomorrow is a 40 minute swim with 110 minute run.

What I want to know after all this working out is where are my abs?! I still only seem to have one!

Also, a marketing tactic that had me laughing hysterically at 0500 today. The body glide stick that I use says it has sunblock spf 15 in it. I have to tell you...I would absolutely get arrested if i needed sunblock "feature" where I need to apply the body glide

:rotfl:

Have a wonderful day my fellow Meaners!!!!

Mike

Mike, Dude, I totally understand about the abs. I must have zero fat everywhere else and that six pac keeps eluding me. Ain't fair!

Just wanted to post a quick hello/goodbye. I'm heading out for a trip to Virginia to visit my Mom. I don't know if I'll get a chance to get online. Hope everyone has a great week.

Cindy

Good Afternoon Meaners! I am relaxing here, watching NASCAR, after spending a couple hours at the gym. My dsis sprained her ankle pretty bad last week (could even be broken, X-ray tomorrow) so we hung out at the gym, did 60 min on the elliptical and then did some weights. It was a good workout for both of us.

LTO big time this week. Hard to get back into the swing of things. I really did a good job with the workouts, but eating is way off. I can never seem to get them both on target at the same time. When I am working out the best, I am eating to much and not on target. Oh well.....could be much worse.

Seems quiet around here..... does anyone want a Wagon Tip of the Day???

Here it goes anyway...........

(From Nancy Clarks Food guide for Marathoners)

Whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables, offer hundreds, perhaps thousands, of substances called phytochemicals that protect our health. These include:
: Protease inhibitors in soybeans that may slow tumor growth

: Isoflavones in dried beans that my reduce the risk of breast or
Ovarian cancer.

: Isothiocyanates in broccoli that may help block carcinogens from
damaging a cell's DNA

These phytochemicals may explain why the cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, are thought to be protective against cancer, and onions and garlic are thought to be protective against heart disease.

Food for thought!

Beth

Wow, Mike, I'm impressed with your weekend schedule -- and I thought MINE was busy!!! I am no help on the hydration issue, though, so I'll leave that to the more knowedgable here.

Vic and others headed to WDW in October -- I am so jealous! I have to say that the meal at the LTT and the NSSHP afterwards was one of the highlights of my trip. It was the first time I'd EVER seen the headless horseman -- and I've been to that event at least 4 times. Great memories -- and the race was a lot of fun for me as well. My first night race -- Too cool!

Debra -- Starbucks has some really good unsweetened black iced tea. One of my self-indulgences! Even bought a box of Tazo tea bags there my last visit and am sucking that stuff down as I type! :) You've got a good thing going with your gift-giving habit! Sweet!

OK, gotta go, so I'll say I had a very hilly trail walk yesterday -- 10 miles and I'm so happy with myself. Today was errand day, and tomorrow it's back to work. Whew! Closing in very quickly on September and the Disneyland Half it seems to me -- spent a long time today trying to find close (relatively) races to keep me going. I may need to do some virtual races with some of my teammates -- Amy, I may join you virtually for your Brevard NC race. I'm also trying to get a commitment from my family to go with me to the hilly trails at least once a month -- just for safety's sake. I love my rural lifestyle, but it makes it tough to hook up with running/walking partners.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekends!
