Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Hello lean and mean buds.

Well I broke even on weight yesterday, but tomorrow I start training in ernest so we shall see what happens.

I'm coming to grips with the chewing, sort of, I had grilled stuffed flounder and a baked potato for lunch. I couldn't eat the potato skin which is the most nutrient rich part and my favorite.

I still want that thin crust veggie, that will be my test of being back to normal. The toughest thing I usually eat is chicken since we don't do a lot of red meat.

Debra I have some weight I can lose, only about 12 or 15 lbs though. I would love to be 160 to 165 again. I currently weigh 177.4 and by the BMI chart I'm overweight, even though by my home Body Fat Scale I'm at 14% body fat. I'm 5' 9.5" tall.

http://www.consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm

I have a light to medium frame and I would look anorexic any lower than 150.

Porky Panda:eek:

Wow! Panda, if you are porky, I give up! From the pictures, you look just right......15 more pounds is ALOT! But, I get the whole weight chart thing......I am also considered overweight.....and will be for ever more. I will never be able to lose everything the 'chart' would want me too.

Many years ago, I did WW. I lost 90 pounds and was down to 135......for about 6 hours......I just could maintain that low. Funny thing is that I was wearing a size 8 then......I was wearing an 8 when I was 160 pounds this time. I find that unbelieveable. My sister weighs 135 and wears a size 8....I loaned her a pair of my pants last summer, and she couldn't believe I was wearing an 8 being being 25 pounds heavier than she is. I still don't get it....

Right now, at 172, I am wearing a 10. That was always my goal.....especially when I was wearing a size 20/22. 10 seemed the 'perfect' size. I just want to be 160 again......the goal had always been 150, but I could live with 160. I would like to be there by the end of summer......so, let's get busy!

Debra: Glad the bread came out, and DOOD appreciates it! My family just doesn't go wild over anything I bake anymore.....I don't get it! I would love to eat it all! I swear I am just torturing myself!

Lisa: Your recipe seems really easy.....I will try it this weekend, and hope for the best with family! I always have the stuff to bake!

WWDave: Good luck with your goals! You definitely are one Lean Meaner!

Big Vic: Good job with the weight training.....you ROCK!

Tiger Lily: What is Ezeckel bread? I have never heard of it. Hope your tummy is better!

To everyone else.......Have a great Lean Meaner day!

Beth

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is well. Rain today in NW Florida.

Got my weight workout in last evening. Felt good to sling some iron.

Beth - Hope you're feeling better.

Y'all take care.

:)

Hi Everybody!

I am so far behind, I can't begin to catch up, so I'll just do a little update on me and jump in from here.

I scaled my mileage back on Saturday because we had a birthday party for ds, and my time was limited. Yesterday I did 4.2 miles, so that was good. Today I'll be on the bike for crosstraining. I am so ready for Spring! We have sunshine, but I'd really like a 60 degree day. I guess it will come eventually!

For those that don't know me well -- I am a grants professional with about 15 years of experience. I am a member of the American Association of Grantwriting Professionals. This organization has been working for the last five years or so to create a professional credential specifically for grant professionals, as one did not exist. A professional credential means that in order to earn the credential you must first be qualifed to take a test, then take a psychometric test, which has been created through a rigorous process. The qualification process usually involves submitting an application/resume with your accomplishments and experience as well as references. The certification process was finally ready to go last Fall. I submitted my application in September, and was invited to take the test in November. The test consisted of 4 hours to complete multiple choice questions, and 90 minutes to prepare a written section. It took me about 3 1/4 hours, to do the multiple choice, and 75 minutes for the written part. I was very nervous after I finished, because the test is truly for generalists, and although I have worked in both the private and government arenas, I've been doing strictly government work for the past 7 years. There were many questions where I really was guessing. Anyway, I finally got my results last week, and I passed! Right now, there are 170 credentialed grants professionals nationwide, and I am one of four in New England. So, anyone who sees my designation (potential employer) should feel confident that I can do anything grants-related with excellence.

This was the hardest test I've taken since I defended my thesis to get my Masters, so I am pleased as punch. I don't often have exciting life news to share, so I wanted to let my DIS family know!

Wow, sometimes this thread really moves!! Must be a testament to the contributors...

Lily: Hope you are feeling better!! :flower3:

Maria: :cool1:

Beth: I think that your goals are reasonable and your time frame is too. 160 is definitely achievable for you and 150 is also, it just takes time. The closer you get, the slower it moves....trust me on that one!!

Dave: I agree with Beth. I met you in person and don't see that you need to lose 15 pounds :scared1: I think you need to check the BMI chart again. I did the calculation and I am on the way low end of the reading (I used to be on the high end last year :woohoo: ) but I certainly don't feel like I should be as far down as I am.

Shan: They build them bigger and better every day!!!

Everyone else: :thumbsup2

As far as the clothing issue...I have a complete problem with sizing these days. When I was my tiniest, 112 pounds, I wore a size 3. Now, at 129 (and holding thank you) I wear a 2/4. So I say WTH!! In Old Navy, it is a 0, yes nonexistent like you can see right past me if I stand sideways. At least that is how it feels. My favorite designer is Michael Kors, always in a size 6 in his clothes. Bought a pair of crops the other day, and they are falling off me. No I am not smaller...just irritated

Okay, back to your reguarly scheduled Leaner Meaner thread.......:rolleyes1

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! It was a beautiful day here and that made it all the better.
Maria..Congrats on your test results. what a huge accomplishment!
Beth...I think that weight and sizes all comes down to body types. Some body types can carry considerably more weight. A few years ago, a group of friends and I, started our own biggest loser group. We are all the same height and wore the same size. When we got on the scale 2 of us weighed 25lbs more than the others. You could have blown us away! The two of us fell into the group we would call "curvy". But, we thought the same thing, how can we weigh more and still wear the same size.:confused3
Shan..That's awesome you got your ring resized and it's so much smaller.
Panda..Glad you're eating some regular food and it sounds so good.
Vic..WTG on the weight training.
Debra..Woo Hoo on the weight loss.:yay:
Lisa...you tiny little thing...have a great day. Did you say you were gonna run in the mud? That sounds un-princess like.:rotfl:
Stacie..Glad you're back:)

Hello everyone!

Trying to do a quick catch up here.

Maria - Congrats!

TigerLily - hope you're feeling better.

Panda - good to hear you're on to solids. What about making a veggie pizza on large tortilla and tossing into the toaster oven until cheese melts. We do this sometimes for a lunch/snack and it is tasty.

Sounds like I'm going to have to find and try that bread recipe. Fresh baked bread goes faster in my house than sweets.

Well it was cool and real windy for Saturday's 5K at Epcot. Did ok but not as good as I wanted. Same pace as always but on the plus side I didn't have to stop at all. Shin cramped once, changed stride and it worked itself out. Have to figure out that stride from the start and the new stretching did help. Just seems like that shin is not happy until it bugs me first. :confused3

Managed to not gain anything back even with eating at WDW over the weekend. That is an accomplishment as far as I'm concerned.

Started working out with personal trainer again this week (Mon & Thur). He had been out of commisson due to a snowboarding run in with a tree. Yesterday was an hour of core work and I'm feeling it now. Abs reminding me that I didn't keep up with the routine. Tonight is TM thankfully. ;)

Hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

Hi guys and pretty princessses:

I had the best workout this morning. I had a great 4 miles on the tready with walking speed from 12 to 15 min per mile. I even did some accellerations during the 12 mpm pace, next week I'm moving into the 11 mpm range.

After the miles I did a great hour of calistetics and stretching. I did the static and dynamic stretches both. It really felt wonderfull, I did some really deep stretchs for my achillies with no problems.

Can't wait till I can take my racewalking outside again.

How's everyone doing?

Walking Panda:hippie:

That 15 lbs of pudge is covering up my once buff body, I want it back!:)

Hi Everyone!

Thank you so much for the good wishes. I am sort of walking on air -- when I'm not walking on the TM!:rotfl:

Dave -- I just think we wouldn't be able to see you sideways if you lost 15 lbs! ;)

Liz -- The 5K at Epcot sounds like a ton of fun! I am officially envious! :thumbsup2

Tracey -- Sorry I missed your Happy Birthday! I hope it was awesome!

Lisa-- Clothing sizes mean very little -- the more you pay, the smaller you are!:lmao:

Vic -- I hope your rain passes quickly. We have sunshine, so that's half the battle. Now if it would just warm up! :cold:

Shan -- My chest is always the first to go, and let's just say there's not alot of excess there to start with...:confused3 :scared1:

Beth -- I don't think I'll ever get on the charts weight/height-wise. I bet I'm still more "fit" than some of those Supermodels!

Debra -- I am incapable of resisting peanut sauce. I try to limit my Thai exposure, because it always ends with me enjoying pad thai and wiping my plate :headache:

Stacie -- I classically do not do well with Springing Forward. This year I worked half of yesterday, then took a good long nap. I seem to be back on track, so that's my strategy for future years.

Lily and everyone else I missed -- I hope you are having a great week!:woohoo:

Maria :cloud9:

Vic: I love hot, spicy Thai Food. And Indian food! Servers are always asking me if I *really* want it hot--and I do, I do! Unfortunately, a lot of the vegetarian dishes aren't that spicy even when ordered so. I guess the tofu just doesn't hold the heat like meat does.

Lisa: Thanks for the tip about the rolled oats! :thumbsup2 I can't imagine not kneading bread either. Strange. Again, thanks for sharing the recipe because it's making our transition to eating our own bread whenever possible so easy.

Shan: I'm with you. A couple of weeks ago I was complaining that it didn't seem quite fair that the first place I gain weight is below the waist but the first place I lose it is above. Sometimes I think I look like a Weeble Wobble! :lmao:

Dave: Thanks for the BMI chart link. It was interesting to see where I fall and even more interesting to hear it classifies you as overweight. I have a hard time seeing that. Still, it sounds like those numbers aside, you know at what weight you feel healthiest and most comfortable at, so that's where you should aim for! :thumbsup2 I'm just sorry that you're on currently on a thin-crust veggie free lifestyle right now, even if it helps you reach your goal. And your goal seems reasonable, just back to your "fighting weight."

And :woohoo: on your great 4-miler. Your pace never fails to amaze me. I think you're a walking advertisement for, well, walking!

As a side note, I'm never quite sure what kinds of numbers/calculators to trust, as they get circulated in all sorts of "women's magazines," many of them claiming to be concerned about healthy living vs. appearance. And yet those same magazines tend to perpetuate a one-size-fits-all definition of beauty & promote thin over strong. :sad2: BMI seems to be as neutral as any of them.

Beth: Speaking of goals, I agree with Lisa & think your goals are reasonable, too. You've been consistently hitting your monthly target, making good progress, not beating yourself up over those rough days we all have. And you're not wanting to reach some weight that will interfere with your ability to do anything but focus on maintaining your weight. After all, we all need to find a healthy weight that allows us a little room for baking ('cuz I don't bake without tasting the bowl), beer, and just plain breathing!

Cowboy Vic: Sling some iron? Am I missing a showdown happening round these parts? :rotfl: I'm glad you managed to get in some weight training, though, and without waiting until high noon.

Maria: Wow! I had no idea that American Association of Grantwriting Professionals had this test. That's great news on getting your credentials. And impressive! :worship: I hope you're planning on doing something to celebrate & commemorate the results.

Tracey: I'm so glad your birthday went well & you enjoyed a beautiful day. I know what you mean by body types & weight. My friend and I wear the same size, despite the fact we have 6 inches difference in height. And she weighs more than I do. (That's the muscle, I'm sure, as she's quite the runner.) But I look heavier, as I carry my weight in different places.

Liz: Congrats on the 5K. I'm glad your shin didn't give you too much trouble, and was just letting you know it was there. Good job with the no weight gain, too. And you just reminded me it's a crunch day for me. Ugh. My core will thank you...eventually.

As for me: It's spring break week here, so what are we doing? Squeezing in a couple of extra workouts before DOOD heads out for his spring-break conference tomorrow. Then I'll be living single for a few days while he whoops it up in a hotel room. And that's always a danger for me because I have very little incentive to cook for myself, esp. considering my cooking skills. :lmao:

In the past, this temporary single life has meant treating myself to take-out food, or a nice cafe, or just noshing whenever I wanted. Now I've got to come up with a strategy to avoid those old behaviors. Don't mind me if I send you all a panicked post & you have to tell me to back slowly away from the samosas & palak paneer.

Clothing-size issues. Boy, do I have issues with vanity sizing. I'm not a natural clothes shopper. I like to get in & out as quickly as possible (with the exceptions of workout clothes & vintage stores). It really frustrates me to no end that I can fit into a range of 4 different sizes in women's clothing, depending on the brand. And that's not to mention men's clothing, as I tend to wear a lot men's & unisex clothing. Labeling clothes with ever-decreasing sizes doesn't make me feel smaller. It offends me. Do they really think I'm duped by the label? (And who really wants to be a non-existent size zero? Not that I think you're non-existent, Lisa, I'm just agreeing with you--although I'm not a zero myself.) Hey, whenever I want a reality check, all I have to do is look at vintage clothing. *Sigh* Why can't sizes just be uniform?

Sizing is the bane of my exsistance. Really. My dh does better picking my clothes without me being there, than I do trying the stuff on. I can't fathom how he does it, but he does. 85% of the stuff he gets me not only fits, but I get the most compliments on. Bless him......he could be a personal shopper.

I NEVER know what size to try on. If it's to big, ok, but when it's to small (and the size I 'wear') it sends me in a tail spin. I feel bad about myself, and I don't want to buy anything. But, on the flip side, I have been known to buy something because of the size (and fits!) even if I don't particularly like it~! It's happened when the size 8 fit my booty!!!!!

There is no easy solution......uniform sizing would be a god-send.

Beth

On the subject of shopping for your princess. One of my favorite things to do is have my princess put on an old pair of sweats and we go shopping and buy her a new outfit from the skin out including shoes. I don't normally enjoy shopping that much but this is fun.

I do like checking the sales on my lunch break in the mall. I have found some wonderfull bargins. My size is usually left over in the mens sections so they hit the final clearance. One of my favorites is the year end Dillards when they do 75% off and then 40% off of that. I buy most of my clothes that are not workout clothes this way. Especially since I have to wear dress pants at work, black, my size is usually left over for that final clearance.

They don't have anywhere here that carries good running/walking stuff. So I have to wait till the Expos at races to try on shoes.

Speaking of shoes, Erica said the new Nike Air Moto 5 has a good wide toe box, that is a problem for her since her bunions hurt from most shoes being to narrow there.

Debra, I know the BMI, height weight charts and such are pretty screwed up. I was just being sarcastic with that chart showing I was overweight. The height weight charts are even worse. Once I had rubella and couldn't eat for two weeks. I got down to 140, which most charts said was a good weight for me. I looked like a death camp survivor.

Congratulations Maria, that is a wonderful accomplishment.

Happy Birthday Tracy, I hope you had a great one!

Ezekiel bread This is the bread that Ezekiel lived off of while he was in the desert for two years according to biblical story. It is supposed to be nutritionally complete. This we find in the freezer at our grocery store and needs to be kept there b/c it does not have the preservatives. I enjoy it and find one slice filling.

Where is the recipe that everyone is talking about from Lisa? Is it on the recipe thread or is this something else?

My BMI is 27.7 according to the calcs. I’ve got 19 more pounds to go so I can be considered not to be in the overweight range. I am really making an effort to not gain while I am sitting at home healing. I’ve been journaling and trying to make choices that make a difference. I think it is working. I even managed to put in some steps today on TM and feel ok about it.

DH likes to buy clothes for me. I like it too since I am usually frustrated when I get there and he prefers going without me and bringing home his choices. He manages to pick out sizes and styles that mostly I like only need to return once in a while. He really enjoys going and the staff usually are quite helpful when he's there. He even can manage to pick shoes. They especially like him in Victorias Secret and he enjoys shopping there too. Andy he purchases stuff I can actually wear too in that store. ;)

Lily: I found it back on page 27 or 28 so here it is:

Here is my recipe, it is sooooo simple: Mix 2 tbsp yeast with 1/2 cup water and 1 tablespoon honey, let bubble. In a VERY large bowl, mix 2 cups hot water and 2 tbsp honey until the honey dissolves. Mix in 2-1/2 cups flour (your choice), 1/4 cup ground flax seed, 1/4 cup wheat germ. Without mixing, add the yeast mixture, 1/2 cup olive oil, and 3 more cups of flour. Now mix everything until you have a slightly sticky shiny dough. Cover with a wet cloth and let rise to double. Punch down, knead, divide in 2, form loaves, oil pans lightly with olive oil, put dough in and rise to double. Into the oven at 375 for exactly 23 minutes. Hope it works for you. It is a time saver for me.

I have 2 other recipes that I use infrequently due to the amount of time required to make them. They are from the Jane Brody Good Food Book long out of print but soooooo worth having especially for vegetarians (Debra ;) ). I lived out of this book when I was bodybuilding in order to get my balanced protein to carb ratio.

I am going to look for the Ezekial bread today and the Seven Stars yogurt that Debra mentioned. I can hit the big (and favorite) natural food store tonight if my local store does not have it. DD has field hockey and I have to waste 2 hours. Usually I sit and read but tonight I may have something to do!!!

Today is my day off so, if I don't get back on....have a Lean Mean day!!!!!

in this VERY busy forum for a newbie endurance "athlete"?

I have a duathlon (5 run, 40 bike, 5 run) under my belt and am training for a 1/2 Ironman in Racine this summer...just started week 2 of a 20 week plan.

Swimming is work!

Hi guys! :wave2:

I have a question on the recipe...Not to menion that I've never made bread before...

Where exactly do you buy yeast, flax seed and wheat germ? In the regular grocery store? wal-mart?

Does it have to be Special Olive Oil? Virgin Olive Oil?

After you divide it, what size pan does it go in? Do you wait for it to rise again before you stick in the oven?

You see...THIS is why I need a cook...and a maid! :lmao:

I'm sure you can tell I've never been a healthy eater or much of a cook!

I feel like all I ever do I work, and try to find the time to train/gym/run after. I didn't have dinner last night until 9pm and it was a bowl of Fruit Loops! Not mention we had waffles Monday night!

Lily--I clicked on the Recipe link in your siggy. Some really good crock pot ideas! I'm going to definatley have to try those. That may be the only way we get a descent meal in my household. This whole cereal for dinner thing has to stop!

I've really got to get this "food is fuel" thing under control. I'm starting to run longer on Saturdays and need to figure out how to fuel my body properly and still lose weight.

FUELING QUESTION
Does anyone use gels or gatorade type stuff for your longer runs. I've a few suggestions that runs lasting longer than 1hr you should have gatorade or gels or something every 15-20 min...something other than water. Can anyone provide any incite?

You guys have a good day!
Stacie

Lisa - thanks for reposting the recipe. Sounds easy and tasty. Will have to give it a try this weekend.

Got in 40 min on the TM last night but only 2.5 miles due to the shin acting up something fierce. Feel like I need to increase the speed (feels too slow) but each time I do the pain gets worse until I stop, get off and stretch it again. Nothing else hurts and I'm not winded or tired it's just this shin. Was so frustrated last night - came back upstairs depressed and on the verge of tears. :sad1: I have really got to figure this out. Don't know if stride is wrong or technique is wrong or :confused3 .

But for now, back to work....

Have a great day everyone!

Are you a runner or a walker?

The shins are small muscles as leg muscles go so they have to be strong. I would suggest massage with your thumbs running up and down the shin muscles and then ice for 15 min then repeat in an hour.

My shins hurt if I try to go to fast to quick, even though I have strong shins. Perhaps you are not warming up? I walk at 3.0 on the tready for a lap then 3.5 for a lap then go to 4.0 for a lap before I do any speed work at all.

After walking I'm doing a complete stretching routine.
