Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Walker. I've been warming up for 5 min at 3.0 then get off TM, stretch trying to pay attention to shins then back on at 3.0 and start to increase after about another 5 min. Even so the left one in particular will start to hurt. If I step back off, stretch it again and massage it's been easing off but not last night.

The stretch I use when it starts to feel like it's cramping doesn't have the same feel earlier on. I do the same one after warm up but it doesn't feel like there's any "stretch" unlike when I stretch calf/quads/et - that make sense? Almost like that muscle has to tighten up before I can get it to loosen up.

It stops hurting within a few minutes of stopping or if I start to jog (I land on the balls of my feet when I jog at all - used to sprint).

in this VERY busy forum for a newbie endurance "athlete"?

I have a duathlon (5 run, 40 bike, 5 run) under my belt and am training for a 1/2 Ironman in Racine this summer...just started week 2 of a 20 week plan.

Swimming is work!

YES, Welcome!!!!!!:welcome:just jump right in!

Beth & Lily: It's the same with DOOD. I think he sees my body with that neutral-to-appreciate male eye of his. I don't understand it, but he doesn't seem to see my many flaws (physical & otherwise). And he doesn't have issues with the sizes on my clothing either (his clothing is another story), so it makes it easier for him.

And just to confirm how much I dislike clothes shopping, what did I attempt to do today? Buy a bathing suit for my upcoming Disney trip. Arrrgh! Once again, I'm at least 4 different sizes. And let's not go into the body issues that arise when trying on bathing suits. I ended up not getting one, again, which I figured might happen. I need time to adjust my thinking, so I started early on purpose.

Dave: Dang--my sarcasm detector failed me! I have no problem believing that the BMI chart was off, though, because like I said the calculations were "interesting." But it's sometimes hard for me to assess with all the misinformation out there--I really do think a lot of mainstream magazines & media information screws with my head.

Lily: Thanks for the info--I think Whole Foods carries Ezekiel bread. The protein content is particularly appealing.

Lisa: Thanks for the book tip; I'm always on the lookout, you know! I don't know if Seven Stars will be available up your way, but I hope so! I find it tasty, and I like the vanilla & maple flavors as well as the plain. (Although I eat the plain most of the time.)

laxdef69: Jump right in, the water's fine! I look forward to hearing about your training!

Stacie: I'll try to answer your questions, with what little experience I have with the bread--having made it once. I'm sure Lisa can give you more expert responses.
  • I think most grocery stores carry yeast, flax seed, and wheat germ. The first two should be in the baking aisle, and I find wheat germ in the cereal aisle. I use Bob's Red Mill flax seed and Kretschmer Wheat Germ. Maybe Lisa has brands she likes? (Hint, hint.)
  • You can use any olive oil, I'd think. I used my everyday olive oil from Zingerman's. And if you haven't heard of Zingerman's, check it out. This is where I would go if I died & could choose my version of heaven! (Okay, it would be WDW & catered by Zingerman's!) I think the better the olive oil, the better the taste--and since olive oils have different tastes, your bread would vary.
  • I just used regular loaf pans, although I'll be danged if I can remember what size that is. And yes, let the bread rise that second time.
  • Also, I used chestnut honey for the bread--so yummy!

As for gels/gatorade: I've used powerade but I tend to stick to beans. I pretend they're a treat instead of fueling.

Liz: Oh, for the shins. I wish I had advice for you. What kinds of stretching exercise are you doing?

Dave: Thanks for the recommendations for the massage. I think I'll try to convince DOOD to help me out with my training by massaging my shins regularly. They don't hurt--I'm just being proactive. And I'd return the favor, of course! ;)

As for me: DOOD is now out of town. I had leftovers for dinner--healthy leftovers. So far, so good. Aside from the bathing-suit fiasco, it's been a good day. Of course, the first day is the easiest.

Also, we'll be looking for a yogurt maker soon. If anyone has any recommendations, let me know!

1.1 mile swim in the pool, 30 minute run.

although i'd rather be doing this :happytv: I know what I SHOULD be doing.

Anyway, I have had pretty good luck using Source Naturals Triathlete supplement for workouts over an hour, and using Cytomax during and after for recovery.

I have also started eating a toasted bagel and two tablespoons of peanut butter within 45 minutes of completing either the only, or the longest workout of the day to take in protein and simple carbs...evidently your body is ready to take in protein and carbs right away, which helps with the recovery.

If i could just get to and stay asleep now....

P.S. I tried to paste in links to the products, but evidently I haven't made enough posts to be able to do so.

Beats me Liz, sounds like you are doing everything right. Lets ask Robert and see what he thinks, he is the shin injury expert.

Robert are you out there???

:goodvibes :goodvibes Good Morning, Lean Meaners!:goodvibes :goodvibes
I'm sending good thoughts because my family seems to be suffering from the doldrums of Springing Forward. We're sleepy, crabby, and little Tad is suffering from croup. Yuck! But, today is another day.:)
Ouch, Liz, shin splints are horrible. Could it be your shoes?
Hey, Mike, :welcome: the more, the merrier.
Debra, ooooo, bathing suits...is is that time already? Good luck finding "the perfect fit". Way to stay on track with the healthy eating. When my DH goes out of town, the kids and I get to eat cereal for dinner.
Stacie,I'm with you on needing a maid! I think Debra covered all your baking needs. A regular loaf pan is 9x5. Bread can be a little tricky, but it's so worth the end result.
Lisa & Lily,I went out and bought wheat germ last night for the bread. I saw the Ezekiel bread and it looks really good, too. I'm planning on baking today.
Panda, Sounds like you know how to treat a lady! What a lucky wife you have.
Beth,Sounds like your hubby is a great shopper.
Maria, Vic, Bill and everybody else..Have an absolutely wonderful day!
I'm going to the river to run and clear my head. DH is stressed at work and that makes it hard on the household. Today is "Donuts with Dad" for the 9 year old and daddy forgot and scheduled a meeting and he won't be able to go to the school. I'm not sure who felt worse. They worked it out to do a lunch date one day next week. Thank goodness DH is a quick thinker. However, I'm one of the moms serving donuts this morning, so we have to go to school and see all the other daddies. I promise to not be such a downer tomorrow.

Morning Lean Meaners!! Sorry I went MIA yesterday. I got caught up in life and today I feel the pain. I ran yesterday, not my normal run or XT day, to meet DH at a local store to ride in the log truck to the mill with him since I NEVER see him these days. He told me to be there at 9:30, I ran extra fast my last 0.25 miles up hill to make it there in time and he did not arrive until 10 a.m. Today, the base of my big toe on the right is painful and I have a 50 minute run today. Needless to say, it will be slow.

I also was discussing our planned trip in April to DC on the train with the kids and once DH heard how expensive the DC hotels were, he nixed the trip. We are currently in negotiations. Spring break, cherry blossoms in full bloom, DC, you do the math. :teacher: Wish me luck!!

Stacie: Good luck with the bread. Don't get discouraged. I still get bad loaves here and there. This bread can also be shaped into a ball and let rise on a cookie sheet but it gets HUGE, just a warning!! I only buy my yeast, flax seed (whole) and wheat germ at the natural food store because I use A LOT of it and buy it in larger quantities there.

Tracey: Boo hiss on the daddy miss!!! I have a daddy who promises and then has to work too, I have been know to show up at father functions.....

Debra: Swimsuit.....I hear ya. Even at my smallest, I never found one I liked on me. Kind of like photos of myself, never saw one of those I liked either. I usually go really conservative thinking I need to cover my "problem" areas and, of course, pad the chest, then I get to the beach/pool, look around and realize that I could have worn whatever I wanted cuz everyone else is too. Here is DD13 (then 12) on the beach in Miami, lounging in her chair, sits up, glasses down the nose and goes "oh man, yuck" and there is an older larger gentleman in a speedo that you could only see from the back. It is all relative, so find something you are comfortable in and go with that. Try to not obsess about the issues you think you have cuz you will probably see others with more that should be wearing more too!!!

Dave: Erica is certainly a lucky lady. If my DH bought anything for me it would come from Victoria's Secret or Fredricks and there wouldn't be enough material to call it clothes!!!!!!!! :scared1:

Beth: You are a lucky lady too, ditto the message above. Needless to say, I do my own shopping. Besides, he would buy it too big or too small seeing as I have to try on EVERYTHING. I went to get some capri pants for the now probably not happening trip and I ended up having to go to the junior section and buy a 3 which is just sooooo wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone else: Hi, howdy and have a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walking Panda:hippie:

It sounds like Liz is doing the right things. It might be stride or shoes. Both can cause issues. Also, I use orthotics to help. I find that my shins act up with to much speed or too much mileage increase.

Also, a good visit to a PT can really help.

Hope this helps.

Recovery food (bagel and peanut butter) worked great, i wasn't hungry until around 10:00, whereby I had 20 nuts, water, and a piece of whole grain bread.

Lunch was 1:00, large bowl of kale, bean, and a little chorizo for flavor soup.

Workout today was supposed to be 90 minute bike, but at 30 degrees its too cold...went inside and did 75 minutes on the elliptical, then walked the track for 15.

tomorrow is a 30 minute swim, then 30 minute run.

Have a great training day everyone!

Thanks Dave and Robert.

Was fitted for these shoes last month as I was having this same problem in a pair of running shoes so figured that might be it. These are New Balance walkers and feel good but might need orthotics. Keep changing my stride when it starts trying to find just the right spot. Guess I'll keep trying and see about getting a referral to PT or sports therapist.

Tonight however is core/strength training with a personal trainer that studied under the Marquis de Sade.:scared:

Hi Guys and Pretty Princesses, just a quick stop to say hi before bed. I'm keeping up with the stretching, unfortunately it requires getting up earlier to get everything in. That's ok though it's peasefull before daylight.

Is it spring yet?

Good morning all you Lean Mean people (well not so mean, but lean!!) :goodvibes Where did everyone go??? :confused3

Robert: Yay, it's Robert. How goes the workouts??

Dave: Watch those guys with pipes and bats. I hope they are scared of pandas!!! :scared1:

Everyone else: :rolleyes1 It's lonely here without you.......................

I am now battling the Girl Scout cookies. It is a war of wills and well...I am not winning. I can manage to keep myself to only 1 serving though (4 cookies WTH) and I am working on teaching my kids portion sizes. They are both being pretty good about it. My DD13 has started health class and she was amazed to see that she was one of about 5 kids in her class of 25 that exercised regularly. She had the highest amount of it. Coincidentally, she also had the lowest body fat score. Hmmmmm....... They have been discussing healthy eating and portion sizes so we are working on that here at home too. It is a good lesson to learn now. That and not mindlessly eating. This is a difficult one with DS6. How do you distinguish between a growth spurt and mindless eating????

Good morning everyone.:goodvibes
Lisa..just wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you, for the bread recipe. It is awesome! :thumbsup2 Even my pickiest one ate it and didn't know all the good stuff he was getting with each little bite. It'll be a keeper in our family.
I took the dog and the jogging stroller down on the river trail yesterday for the 5.1 mile loop. I ran/walked it in 57:38. Considering I was contending with pushing that stroller and pulling the dog off the deer tracks, I didn't think it was too shabby.
Have a great week-end all and stay strong! We're headed to the lake, of course it looks like it's going to be cold and rainy.

You said it Panda. It can't come soon enough.

Tracey:  You are welcome. I am glad everyone has had such success with the bread. It is a major time saver for me and makes it easier to have good things for my family in the house!!

Good news! Ya know, I've been stuck for quite awhile... Yesterday, I woke up and had lost a pound. Decided to keep it to myself cause I thought it might be a fluke, got back on the scale this morning and I lost another! Two pounds FINALLY! :yay: Hope I'm not jinxing myself here... Three more to go and I'll be back where I was before the holidays.

On a similar happy note... I ran my last long run before my half yesterday - my first 12 miler! AND I LIVED! :woohoo:

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! :grouphug:

YAY SHAN!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Oh and thanks for letting me know you lived, I have 10 this weekend. I was going to do it Saturday but due to snow, I may put if off until Sunday. I did not run further than 8 miles before the half in January so this is a big one for me!!!!!!!!!!!:scared:

Happy Friday!

Well trainer ran me thru a TM drill yesterday. 3.0 pace and increased the incline by two every 1-2 min until it was at 15 (I didn't know it even went that high!) then held it there for 3 min before bringing it down. Was worried about the shins but guess what...absolutely no pain. Nothing, nada. So seems to me that it's most likely weak shin muscles and possibly stride (noticed I took longer steps than did earlier in week). He showed me some exercises to do and two of the machines that help strengthen shins and ankles.

Have tickets to see Alton Brown tomorrow! Lecture, Q&A and book signing.
Will have to put in LR either late Sat afternoon or Sun morning. Have to see how timing works out.

Have a great weekend!

Shan!! Great news!!!

Lisa...It's great your daughter is so active!!!

I have been so not motivated lately! I did get in my 3 miler Wed night, but is was for sure at snail's pace... I was sooo dissapointed! ugh! :headache: Let's just say...If I keep that pace, I'll probably get swept for the Minnie. :headache: I'm supposed to do 2 miles today and then 4.5 miles on Saturday. I hope I can pick up my speed just a bit.

I think part of the problem may be my orthotics. They are only 2 weeks old, just got them from my chiro. We had special ones made to fit my feet. They do great during the day. You can definately feel the arch support, when I take my shoes off at night, my feet don't hurt anymore... I had the bright idea to run in them...Ouch! The run itself was ok, but as soon as I stepped out of those shoes... :scared1: My feet hurt so bad I could barely walk! I was almost in tears! :sad2: I think I will put the factory inserts back in for the next few runs!

That's about all for me. Hope everyone is having a great day! Have a good weekend too!!!

Try running with the factory inserts if they did not hurt your feet before and if your feet hurt afterward, wear your shoes with the custom orthotics for a short time. When I was battling PF last year, I had to run with the orthotics in and then switch to another pair with another set of orthotics to wear for a few hours until my feet came back to "normal". Here's hoping for no pain and, try setting yourself a goal too. I was running at a pace I was not happy with and started telling myself that I would run 1 mile at an uncomfortable (not super fast just out of my comfort zone) pace. I have found that once I started that, it has been easier to increase my speed throughout my run. I actually did 3.1 miles (out of 5) last night in 28 minutes which is a total PR for me!!!!!!!!

Good luck and :wizard: for no sore feet!!!!!!!!!!!
