Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

So a year ago, I was almost 40 weeks pregnant and pretty much ready to try anything to get Delena to make her grand entrance! She was born exactly on her due date 6/25, exactly 40 weeks. At 430 pm on Sunday 6/24 I was getting a spa pedicure, and by 730 I was in full blown labor! I had no contractions, nothing until my water broke. Of course with a newborn, she was the main focus, and exercise, healthy eating were not even on my radar. I was lucky enough to have only gained 25 ish pounds and lost a lot of it right away. But at 2 months when I quit pumping because I was a less than stellar milk producer despite trying every trick in the book, I gained most of it back because I was still eating like I was pumping and I was not exercising.

I finally had enough after seeing thanksgiving pictures of myself and totally hating them, so I signed up for the Minnie 15k. I eventually freaked out about doing that so I signed up for the 5K as well and ended up doing both! I needed a goal to keep me on track for exercising and knowing I was signed up for a race did the trick! I have NEVER EVER exercised as consistently as I have for the last 5 months! I love doing the races and can't imagine myself ever not doing them. I underestimated the emotional impact of crossing the finish line at the Minnie 15K. It was by far my biggest physical accomplishment EVER.

So now I am just below my Pre-PG weight and am continuing on with my running. In a year I hope I can say that I have lost about 30 more pounds and maybe running 9-10 minute miles. I haven't been on WISH that long but I also hope that I meet some of you in the next year in January or maybe this year at TOT!

Amy:)

Good morning Lean Meaners. I have a hard time starting my day without a huge bowl of Lean Mean cereal, how about you?

Vic: Hey look everyone, it's Vic. Wow, you finally came out to play with us....:lmao: You are suffering from lack of motivation too?? Wow it must be catching.

Debra: So what, we get 2 Debra posts in one day and then you have to hold back for a day in order to punish us? WTH???? I am lovin Maria's analogy that we mostly have families like Roseanne. I agree 100% with that. I think we all have our issues in our families. I have my mom to deal with now that I have put my dad issues to rest. I heard a person once say that your parents are the ones who can best push your buttons because they are the ones who installed them. How true, how true......::yes::

Connie: Yay, Connie is back too.....:yay:

Jeanne: I am in that little funk with you. I am in mourning though. I think maybe we should start a "So you need a kick in the butt" thread for those of us lacking a little motivation.

Stacie: I may be a ray of sunshine to some but I am the cloud of doom for others. Just ask DH and he will be HAPPY to tell you all about it. Yes, I am Lisa and I missed another workout, frak (did I do that right Debra?). I am glad to hear that you are going to get the full workup. I truly hope that you do not get any news of celic, gluten, thyroid, etcetera and that things are all well in Stacie-land. I know it would be nice to have an explanation for the tiredness et al but I really dislike hearing that someone has any affliction that makes their lives more difficult.

Beth: Glad to hear you survived the Nancy challenge. So was the tip of the day, do not do anything that Nancy says......

Dave:

Everyone who answered Dave's question: You are all such inspirations you really have no idea. You have fought a difficult battle to get off the couch and start listening to your bodies. You have all battled for your health and continue on in the fight. You are the role models, not the sports figures, not the supermodels, all of you right here. :worship: Onward Lean Mean warriors.....:yay: And have I mentioned lately how much you all rock?????

Anyone that I missed:

From the Great North Woods, well I missed another workout. The IT guy was here until 3 p.m. pushing into my fix dinner and get the kidlets to ballgame/practice time and I got no workout in. I am lacking motivation but appear to be short on time also. I am going to have to rework the scheduling so I can insure my workouts so I do not become snarky, more snarky, snarkiful, etcetera. Having the kids home is not working in my favor I have to say. I am on tap for 3 today but I may make it a bike instead and get some of my miles back that I have lost this week. I am writing in my journal that Sunday starts the new schedule and the new and improved motivation to PR Beach to Beacon 10K in August. I seem to have become lost when I lost my goal for the 5K so I need a new goal. Anyone else like that? I need to have something to work for or I just go into a moderate maintenance phase. I am loving the RW program and it was working great for the 5K so I think I will stick with it for the 10K. I am going to have to modify down the miles until I can catch back up seeing as I have not put many on lately.

Okay, done whining and complaining and snarking....onward.....:goodvibes

Hi Everyone!

I wanted everyone's thoughts/opinions, on what 1/2 half marathon training plan you think is best and why. I am a run:walk interval kind of girl.

Happy Friday everyone! My garmin should be delivered today! :woohoo: :cool1:

Amykab: I am currently using the plan that was in Runners World last month. I really like it a lot but it is high miles and not many people appreciate the mileage. I have, in the past, followed the Marathoning for Mortals plans and I also liked them. They do have specific plans for run/walk and walk/run and may be more to your liking.

I like the RW plan because it keeps my miles up and I only have 4 weeks to concentrate on actual training for a race (although I am still skeptical of the marathon in 4 weeks deal). Not that I am keeping up with the plan but, we can all live in our little dream worlds!!! This is the maintenance plan:
M-3-5 miles plus 4x10 sec hill sprints
T-1 mile easy/2-3 miles at half marathon pace/1 mile easy
W-Rest
Th-2-4 miles easy plus 2 miles moderate
F- 5 miles easy w/6 x 20 second fartlek (yes I typed it :lmao: ) intervals at 5K pace or faster
Sa-Rest
Su-9 miles easy

:faint: ::yes::

Good morning! Yes, again, LTO yesterday. I hardly had time for anything. Late ball game on top of everything.....sorry!

Lisa: My snarky friend! I am the same as you......I hate when my plans/organized day does out with the bath water! I am supporting the snarkiness!

Maria: I hear ya about the sugar. I could be better than I have been the last few days....sigh.....oh well!

Sorry, I am crunched for time.

I leave for a conference in Orlando (alas no DW in our plans) tomorrow, and I am not ready......my dear friend and exercise Nazi Nancy is going with me. Could mean bad things for me!!!!!! She will be cracking the early morning exercise whip!:faint: ::yes:: :faint:

I will try to be back later and check things out.

Wagon tip of the day: Salad dressing......always order it on the side. You can dip your fork in it before taking a bite of salad. That way, you get a little of it with each bite, but it limits the dressing you consume.

Beth

Beth

Gosh, I might have to stay on this thread to defend myself. :rotfl2:

At least some people have lost weight from doing workouts, unlike me.

Hope you are less sore this morning Beth.

Nancy

No WAY am I going to catch up on the last two weeks posts.

Right now I'm jet lagged and a bit sunburned, but wow I had a great time.

I'll post up pics and workouts later.

The shorthand version is that while i didn't stay exactly on track with my tri training plan, I actually lost two pounds while I was gone, so I am down to 206 as of this morning :dance3:

Missed ya meaners!!!!

Mike

Beth/Nancy: have a great time during the conference......make sure you get lots of fun time in!

Have a great time in Orlando, Nancy and Beth! I hear that there are some fun things to do down there even IF you are at a conference!!! :lmao: I think that you COULD fit a couple hours in with the Mouse. I would!

Debra I think that you aren't really estranged from your parents. Estranged is 14 years of no contact and it still feels like....not enough years! Been there, doing that!

Maria -- My son always said our house was most like Grace Under Fire, rather than Roseanne, but definitely not Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver....he didn't want anyone to call him the Beav, mostly! :confused3

Lisa Yes, I feel the same way. How does one workout without a goal?? I got into the whole endurance thing because I was sick to death of working out for an hour, I needed to workout for a reason! I have a couple of 5k's I may do, but I am going for the Palo Duro Canyon Trail Race in October and considering the Route 66 half marathon in November in Tulsa, OK!
After that, I am looking at the Little Rock half marathon and then I am thinking I may try the OKC memorial marathon, not just the half and then I will...............:faint:

I let my greed take over last week. I was eating everything....well, I didn't try the cat's food,......probably would have been better for me than some of the junk I ate. -- Anyway, I think I will just take it easy a couple more days and then hit the ground runni.....walking! and Pilating! And weight resistancing! and stretch, stretch, stretching!

Jeanne, Vic, Mike, Amy, EVERYONE! Make a great day! Do something good for yourself and have a little fun!

Good Morning fellow Lean ones! :goodvibes

I am feeling in better spirits today... It is FRIDAY!!! Yay! We are going to the coast this weekend--to Stacy--and taking my newphew. Hoping the weather will be nice.

AmyK--Yay for getting a Garmin! I LOVE mine!!! The Minnie was also my greatest physical accomplishment! Congrats to you!!! To answer you question about 1/2 Marathon training... I have a spreadsheet. It's the mileage from the Marathoning for Mortals Plan. They do have a plan in the back of the book that is specifically for run/walkers. I think I will attempt that one myself. It has come highly recommended from other folks around here. I think you can set your Garmin to beep at you when it's time to run or walk or whatever...I'm going to have to look into that feature. You mainly run/walk for time during the week and then for mileage on the weekend. That seems work well with my personality. Do you have that book? It's a great book and would be a good investment for motivation / knowledge. If you'd like to see the plan, PM your e-mail address and I'll scan the run/walk plan and send it to you to peruse.

Tracey--Congrats on DH's new job!!! That is great! Glad you liked MB and Bojangles! :goodvibes I've never been to the Biltmore. I guess we should go some day. It's just a few hours from us.

Deb--I hope you are getting your training mojo back. I like the "fake it" approach too. It's worked in other aspects of my life. I'm one that can be bribed as well. I think it's been mentioned, but how about a new clothes / workout clothes or shoes or jewelry...Itunes is definately cheaper though!

Lisa--How ya doing? I totally agree w/ Deb on the totaly package. How are those IT issues? All better? You missed another workout!!! What??? Here's your kick in thet butt for today! (I'm really one to be talking!) I totally get the lack of time thing. Seems there is never enough! I am totally with you having something to work for. Seems that the local 5Ks aren't even enought for me anymore... I do have one coming up in July so let's hope I find my motivation and can train to PR that one.

Panda--HUGS!

Vic--How's it going???

Connie--HI and girl do you have some plans/goals!

Nancy...Hope you figure out what's going on! Are feet feeling better today?

Maria--Yay for the weight loss!!

Beth--Hope you guys have fun in Orlando!

Mike--Glad you're back!

Today was my boss's final day! He is officialy gone now. So sad. I will miss him so much! He's on to bigger and better things though.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! Stay strong!
Stacie

Well I'm jealous that so many of y'all are going to the coast or to Florida and leaving the poor Panda trapped in the RedNeck Capital of the Nation.

Nancy the exercise Nazi, I love it.

Beth, Erica always gets her dressing on the side and dips the fork in it.

Here is a tip from the YARC Panda: Cars give off exhaust fumes, trees and grass give off oxygen and clean the air. So at least once a week do your lungs a favor and walk/run in a park or other "Green" area. Doing your walks/runs beside a road exposes you to all the yucky air.

Connie, glad you are ready to kick butt again. You can do it pretty princess.

Mike, welcome back. My workouts don't sound nearly as tough as yours so it makes me look normal. :rolleyes1

Everyone have a super good day and remember that to someone you mean everything. So be worthy of that honor.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Good morning Leaner Meaners!

Man, two posts in two days. Will miracles never cease!

Yesterday after work I went to the local high school with our chief deputy. He decided he needed to shock his system into overdrive to lose a little weight. For some reason he enlisted me to go along. So, we walked the track and walked the stadium steps. Did 16 X 16 steps and 6 x 32 steps, and walked two miles.

Feel pretty good this morning. I’m sitting at home waiting for Sears to deliver a new oven and cook top. Yeah me!

Stacie – We’re doing well. Have fun this weekend!

Connie – Get back on the wagon and hit the ground running! WTG!! :thumbsup2

Beth and Nancy – Have fun in Orlando. Behave yourselves!

Mike – Welcome back!

WWDave – W’sup!?

Lisa – Yep, seems like the more I have to do, the more unmotivated I get. Me, snarky? Not me. Just ask the DW.

FLAmy – Keep up the great work! See you at TOT.

Jeanneg – Take care of yourself. I hear you about WTO and LTO. I hate it when other things get in the way of fitness.

Maria – WTG with the training and weight loss! :thumbsup2

Tracey – W’sup!?

Debra – Wake up and go to sleep! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

:)

Mike, welcome back. My workouts don't sound nearly as tough as yours so it makes me look normal. :rolleyes1
Walking Panda:hippie:

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Thanks Panda!

Times/distances as follows:

6-3 40 minute run

6-4 off

6-5 50 minute run

6-6 50 minute run with hills 40 minute swim

6-7 30 minute swim, 4 mile run

6-8 80 minute run with hills (8 miles total)

6-9 Off

6-10 50 minute, 1 mile open water ocean swim

6-11 2 tank scuba dive...I don't have any idea how to account for THAT

6-12 130 minute (12.5 mile) run, then a 40 minute beach run

6-13 1 mile open water ocean swim

6-14 40 minute speedworkout with hills

6-15 120 minute (12 mile) run with hills

6-16 Off

6-17 2.7 mile, 24 minute run.

Lisa: I admire your willingness to do hill work so much. I'm sure your race times will improve because of it (as I'm sure my legs would thank me for doing such an event...in January). Even if I'm not at Applefest, another event TBD, I'll be rooting for you to make a great time. (The 1/2 distance actually works against us, well against DOOD.)

I love that you talk about working on getting better in terms of listening to your body and keeping at it. It's not about one day of perfect, it's about daily choices. I think a lot of us have an idea about eating, especially, as either reaching perfection or throwing in the towel. (Let alone exercise, running, hydration, sleep). When really, it's about making better choices, every day. Heck, in my case, sometimes it's every hour. So thanks for the wording!

How are your IT issues now? Have they been addressed? Speaking of issues, on of my good friends tells me I might as well learn to make peace with mine, as they're the only thing that will be with me for the rest of my life. I hate her sometimes. :rotfl2: That's because she's right, frak. (Yep, you got that right--watch Battlestar Galactica, girl, it's good sci-fi!)

Nancy: Great to see you here! I think it's great that you're spreading your love for all your new XT classes to Beth and everyone! (Even if I'm glad I'm not the one who's sore!)

Amykab: You've got a great pace going, what with hitting a 12mm pace on W1D2. I'm impressed! :thumbsup2 Between C25K and your Garmin, I'm sure a 5K PR is in your sights. Colorado: Come for the job opportunities, stay for the microbreweries! There's a Chamber of Commerce poster for you! I'll think good thoughts for your job search and for DH's interview. Is he feeling good about the possibilities?

As for your new haircut, aren't highlights fun? I own a hairdryer, and I even think it's unpacked. :lmao: And your "year ago" story is so inspiring. You've done all these things in such a short period of time. I can't wait to meet you in January! As for the 1/2 plan, I second MfM, which I'll be followig with some modifications to improve my performance, like speedwork. (I'll know more when I get closer to training.) I found that I could still have a life on Bingham's plan.

Dave: How many days until ToT? More importantly, how many days until Lisa's b-day? And your tip about running green is so wonderful. :cloud9: I'm lucky enough to live in an area of Pgh sandwiched between two parks (Frick and Schenley--check it out!), and spending time there walking/running/just hanging out makes a big difference.

Tracey: DS held a shark? You have to post that pic!! It sounds like DH's job is bigger, better, and maybe more satisfying? That last bit is very important, IMO, especially if you don't need to compromise on the family's security, etc.

I didn't know so many of the details of your back story. Only a year?? :worship:
I just feel better in my own skin.
I love that statement--I think that's what running, with or without weight loss, does for me.

Vic: Even if you're not always with us online, we can feel you with us in spirit. Ooooh, I just felt a cold chill across my spine. Yep, there you go again.:rotfl2: No such thing as a measly 3 miles, though! You're being consistent! And you've apparently become your chief deputy's PT! See, I always knew you were a motivator! So, waiting for Sears? Does this mean the kitchen remodel is underway?

Connie: :yay: Good to see you back, and I'm glad to hear your schedule is getting a little more stable--I hope.
Anyway, I think I will just take it easy a couple more days and then hit the ground runni.....walking! and Pilating! And weight resistancing! and stretch, stretch, stretching!
Love your description--this is what I'm going for. I wanna be a rubber-band man, fast yet loose, strong and flexible. (Minds out of the gutter, folks.) As for estranged relationships with my parents, well there isn't anything stranger than mine! :lmao:

Stacie: I'm glad you're feeling better, and think your getaway will help your spirits. But I'm going to let my response to the "first" post stand. First of all, yes, YAY for you. Within a year you have become a multiple-race participant! That's no small potatoes (and no couch potato, either). You're so right, we're harder on ourselves than we'd ever be on each other. Please try to celebrate your successes. They are many and substantial.

Second, for all that you're going through. (Susan, too.) I can't imagine how difficult and scary it must be to have to face a diagnosis that changes everything about the way you live. (Okay, I can, but your situation is so different than mine in terms of the day to day, the eating. Wow!)

Third, you never let us down. Ever. WISH isn't the place where we all post as if we've drunk the Kool-Aid, pretending to be happy-happy-happy all the time. And it's not a place where we perpetuate myths about what it means to be an athlete, implying that it's all progress easily made. It's a place where we can be who we really are, individuals who have chosen to adopt healthier lifestyles. And that includes the successes AND the failures AND, the victories AND the struggles. It's a place for advice, support, commiseration, and the more-than-occasional laughter. And WISH wouldn't be any of these things without all of us participating, sharing, honestly. WISH is family, and you're one of my beloved cousins.

Fourth, you just let us know what we can do for you. You're family, and family takes care of its own. Pssst, I know a guy who knows a guy who can get you gluten-free treats on the down-low....:cool2:

Maria: Shaking things up and shaking weight off! WTG with the 2+ pounds and increased activity. And for the better eating....strange how the two sometimes go hand in hand. A healthy diet almost seems easy to maintain given your family-food history. Pre-vegetarian, growing up days I was expected to eat not just venison, rabbit, and bear, but squirrel, pickled pig's feet, crawfish and turtle soup--and my family isn't from the South! (As for my family, who said I was reasonable one? :rolleyes1 Yep, Michigan is my home state--was exiled to ND for career reasons.)

Beth: Sore quads = good WO, right? Did you have fun? Yay for a weekend with Nancy but boo for no WDW. That's cruel and unusual punishment. Are you sure you can't sneak in a little PD? Btw, I think of having Nancy with you is like having your own on-the-road PT. Good for motivation! I hope you have a good time at your conference, regardless of whether you hit the parks.

Jeanne: Actually, I think it's Maria who's the voracious reader in this group. So much of the reading I've done was work-related. I'm still learning to read for fun! I think your LIFE has been sporadic for the past 6-8 weeks, let alone your WOs. If you were to look at everything that's you've been doing, I'm sure you'd feel the stress behind the funk. As far as the heat, I don't take heat well even if I'm hydrated. Do you? Maybe you need E-tabs? Anyway, you also need a , :love2:, and even :drinking1. Like me, you need to get your mojo back!

Mike: Welcome back! We missed you, too! Yea for having so much--and so varied--exercise! Love the scuba diving! And :woohoo: for losing weight. How did you manage that?? And the new quote (new to my noticing, anyway):
any dead fish can float downstream...
Mwa ha ha ha!

As for me: Sorry my posting has been so sporadic. As you might imagine, I'm trying to juggle a lot of different things at once--none of them particularly well. The writing project has been shelved for a while. DOOD and I have talked about a writing retreat upon his return. I think the disappointment for that part of my June plan probably plays into my funk. In bigger news, I just learned a friend has been diagnosed with testicular cancer, albeit of a highly treatable kind. His DW is expecting their second child. :( If you're of a mind to, please send good thoughts and PD their way. Another friend's divorce just become final. At least a third friend has started a film-production company, so there is some good news!

As for me and where I was a year ago. Last year, I was in the midst of packing up to move--sound familiar? Except it was from Fargo to Pgh. I'd hurt my toe in the process, so much so that I couldn't stand on my tip-toes. It put me off running, off walking, even off the elliptical for 2 months. I was a snarkfest queen!

Since then, I've come back. Did the Goofy. Dropped most of the weight I've gained. Went from wondering if I could finish the distance to other priorities Not just pace, per se, but wanting to feel if I was finishing stronger, with a better sense of control. To that end, I'm working on developing a well-balanced training program. I've tended to focus primarily on my legs, thinking that will get me through. Well, doing so has let me finish but I want to finish strong. So I've been focusing not just on running and walking, but stretching, strength training, core work, etc. I'm still looking for a good balance of activities, and for how to push myself, but I'm much stronger and prepared than I was at this point last year. Or even 6 months ago.

I need to remember all these things, even while I work on climbing out of my funk. In order to do so, btw, I think I'm getting some new running gear this weekend. Just little stuff, like experimenting with new socks. Wow, am I a big spender or what? :cool2:

Debra said:
So, waiting for Sears? Does this mean the kitchen remodel is underway?

Yep, the remodel job is underway. We decided to do things in segments. The appliances needed to be replaced first. So now we have a new fridge, oven and cook top. Tomorrow the range hood gets replaced. Once we get those paid off the cabinets will get refaced, and then new lenolium.

I'll put in new splash guards and put organizers in the cabinets.

::cop:

So, I've been trying the "fake it until you feel it" approach. The good new is, that's been keeping me running and working out pretty close to on schedule. The bad news is, I'm still not feeling it. I'll give it another week or so, see if it is just a funk, and then switch things up if necessary. In the meantime, I'm adding bribery to my list of strategies. Yep, because I'm not parenting myself I feel free to bribe myself to do things.

1st up on the list: New tunes for the iPod after Friday's run. Any other suggestions for bribes that will help me find the love?

You know, there are two bribes I use for myself -- and they may only work for me because they aren't something I do every day. One is aromatherapy soap -- I mean the really great-smelling, super-sudsy, totally self-indulgent kind. My favorite maker is Daybreak Lavendar Farm, but I also occasionally shop at Bath & Body Works or even the Whole Foods store. It sure beats the heck out of Dial or Lifebuoy or whatever my husband picked up on sale from the warehouse store. :rotfl: The other bribe is tea -- I love experimenting with new flavors of herbal teas and green teas and even the occasional Tazo Black Iced Tea from Starbucks. I know I've told folks before I often bribe myself to walk by renting some movie I've been dying to see and forbidding myself to watch it unless I was on the treadmill. (Two good ones this week: Fool's Gold and My Mom's New Boyfriend.) I guess the movies are sort of a reverse bribe -- instead of giving myself something extra, I forbid myself something I REALLY want unless I walk.

I'm not likely to catch up with all the posts, but I did want to offer those suggestions -- since bribery is a fine art in my book. :)

I am liking my new 'do, it's versatile in that I can take the time to blow dry it out nice or just put a bit of product in it and go. My am blessed with hair that has a lot of natural body and wave. I am totally addicted to highlights now!

OK, my quick hair story. Got my hair cut last weekend. You know that joke about having a haircut so bad that you need to wear a hat? Well, it’s not all that funny.

Through a slight misunderstanding with my walk-in-without-appointment hair stylist, I acquired the skinhead look. No, I’m serious. When I went to pick up my race packet last week, they asked if I was a cancer survivor. :scared1:

I thought perhaps in the light of day I’d feel differently. Nope. Lipstick and larger earrings alone won’t affirm my femininity this time – It’s going to take a hat.

So, for the next -- oh, six to eight weeks -- I’ll be wearing a hat. All the time.

Oh Wendy:hug: , You will still be beautiful despite the hair issue. In my case I'm the poster child for "personality is better than looks any day". That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Debra dear, have you thought about taking up a different sport? Racewalking might be a nice change of pace for you. When I made the switch I was very self concious about it. Now I even do my thing at the run races. It's still not a main stream sport but I'm working on that.

Lisa, question for you Darlin. I know you sit at a computer all day, do you do any type of exercises while you are typing? Like leg raises, tapping your feet, stuff like that.

Vic and Mike, welcome back guys. The pretty princesses haven't been to unruley while you were away, but ya never know. A couple of them have been threatening to have a snarky attack.

Stacie, invite Susan over to join us.

Everyone, have a wonderfull weekend.

Happy Panda:hippie:
