Bear Hugs & Piggy Kisses - Baby's 1st Trip ~ Updated 12/6: Aulani TR Started!!!

Love the picture of Izzy in front of the planter at the Poly! Cute!

and bummer about the bus! I'm one who usually gives up my seat for pregnant/moms and I benefited a lot from others giving up their seat when I was pregnant at Disney (although i didn't mind standing) but wrangling a child on a bus is NOT fun! And your poor arm! :(

Mmmmm...Kona looks sooooo good!!

Bummer on the bus situation though! Hope the day turns around!!

Mmmm breakfast looked so good! Sorry about the bus situation that sounds like the pits. Glad you were able to sit down eventually. Makes me glad we're driving this year. I'll feel better having Gavin in his car seat anyway.

Ugh, it always really bothers me when no one offers a seat to elderly / obviously pregnant people on public transit. I think people who don't have kids may not realize how dangerous it is to stand with a baby in your arms on a bus, though. I never even thought about it until I started contemplating parenthood ( and realized you couldn't pay me enough to wrestle a stroller through nyc's public transit system). Still, that doesn't excuse the people on your bus, since it sounds like they were mostly families.
I agree about not really understanding until you have a kid. I was that way.

FWIW, people are usually happy to give up a seat when you explain the situation. I ended up doing that on trains when I was pregnant - not because of pain, but because my balance was wonky and it just felt unsafe to stand.
That's good that people were responsive. I do think public transit is a bit different situation than Disney transportation, though. You don't necessarily have other options with public transportation. I actually take the bus to/from work every day and I was VERY lucky when I was pregnant that I never had to stand (our bus route only gets to standing-room-only every so often - luckily, I never ran into that).

This is all a very roundabout way of saying 1) boo to the people who made your trip harder than it should have been and 2) people are usually just in their own bubble, aren't they?
They really are in their own bubble. I was right there in the middle of the bus and hard to miss - probably looking like I was struggling a bit - and no one seemed to care. :sad2: The thing that bothers me the most, though, is that boarding the bus these same people were so rude - we were literally the first people at the bus stop (remember - we saw the previous bus pull away) - but everyone was shoving in to board in front of us and I felt powerless to cut my way back in front of them because I was holding Izzy and trying to keep Dug and the stroller close behind me. I was getting cut off left and right by people who had arrived after us and would go on to take "our" seats.

Anyway, hope the rest of your day was better!
Yes, the rest of the day was (mostly) better. That was just a difficult way to start things off. Especially since we were staying at the Poly in order to not have to take many buses, but we still had to take some and this one wasn't fun. Oh, well.

Love the picture of Izzy in front of the planter at the Poly! Cute!
Thanks! We saw that bench was open and had to take advantage of it. Although, in retrospect, if we hadn't done so, we probably could have made the earlier bus - and I am pretty sure it was not full when we saw it pass by. Hindsight and all that.

I'm glad that people were helpful for you on the buses. In general, I don't mind standing (myself), but I didn't immediately understand how difficult it would be to hold Izzy while doing so. And I kind-of did think someone would offer a seat once they saw us there. I think my arm was probably numb for a good 10 minutes while still holding her. Such a strange feeling. Good thing she was too young to know, I guess. :confused3

Mmmmm...Kona looks sooooo good!!

Bummer on the bus situation though! Hope the day turns around!!
Kona is always a winner for breakfast with us! Love it! Yeah, the day is pretty good. Some other snags, but at least I can feel my arm. :rotfl:

Yeah, we've never really considered driving because Disney has such good transportation. And we're cheap. :rotfl: But there are definitely some advantages when you have a little one!

Hi, all. Going off-topic again here. We leave in three days for New York! I've been working on our plans and thought I'd post an update here, in case anyone has any feedback. Most things are not really set in stone, and there are a few things we've been moving back and forth between days, but it's something. I have to admit that I am a bit worried about Dug's family derailing the Midtown part of the trip. His parents and DS/DBIL will be staying at the same hotel and don't really have "a plan". Though they've said we can all do our own thing, I'm hoping they don't make us feel bad about doing that and not spending time with them. At any rate, here's what things are looking like right now:

Weds. 4/9:

Hoping Dug's sister can give us a ride to the airport (he needs to ask her still...oops!). She lives near MSP and has done this often for us. She doesn't leave for NY until a couple days later, by the way.

Our flight leaves at 10:05am. Due to longer than usual security lines being reported at MSP, we will probably aim to be there by 7:30am. So, early morning for Izzy. We'll need to be ready to go the night before. Probably plan to eat breakfast at the airport.

I think my goal with luggage is to check almost everything (in our 1 free bag each), if we can manage it. I normally like to keep a day's worth of things and toiletries in a carry-on, just in case luggage is lost, but I might not this time. And we can bring our rolling carry-ons if we need to, but I don't really want to have to deal with a lot of bags on a trip that involves 3 hotels. And I'd like to get though security with as few complications as possible. I need to make a packing list tomorrow and get going on that. For carry-on, I'm thinking Dug will want a backpack of his stuff and I'll want a bag of stuff for Izzy, along with her cooler of milk/food. We'll keep her in her stroller to the gate, then put that in the gate check bag and put her in the Ergo carrier. We are also bringing a car seat and gate check bag for it. We'll either attach this to the stroller handle or put it in the stroller and Izzy in the Ergo. It looks like our flights are nearly full both ways, so we'll probably have to gate check the car seat, but I'd like to bring it along and ask anyway to see if there's room (we did not buy her a seat). We are in a 2-person row (unless we get her a seat), so hoping that will help us have enough room to move around a bit vs. the 3-person rows on our WDW trip. Hoping Izzy will be able to nap on me for part of the flight. We arrive at JFK at 1:55pm.

On a side note, I'm considering not bringing our diaper bag on this trip. We brought it to Disney and it attaches to the stroller handle and worked fine, but I just don't know if we NEED it. I see us needing to fold the stroller more in NYC than WDW and don't really want to deal with it. I'm thinking of bringing our small changing kit (the one we forgot for WDW!) and one of those small sling backpack things with each day's "essentials" (food, bibs, placemats, utensils, milk, spare outfit, etc.) Nothing too big. I think it would work. Two related questions: 1.) It seems that the museums and such are stroller-friendly, but what do we do at restaurants? I think we were spoiled with relatively safe stroller parking at WDW. Not sure how that works in NYC. 2.) I was going to bring the Thermos sippy cup for Izzy's milk (that I forgot for WDW!), but I'm not sure if that would be allowed through the Statue of Liberty's security because it's stainless steel and filled with a liquid (milk). I've heard the security is like airport security there. Anyone know if this is okay? I was hoping to have it for the rest of the day, since we'll be out.

Anyway, we'll call for a town car to pick us up and bring us to our hotel (and install Izzy's car seat in the car), the Best Western Plus Seaport Inn. Check in is 3pm. Hoping we can get there reasonably close to that, check in, maybe unpack a bit, and head out (with the stroller) to walk to Chinatown and Little Italy. We have reservations at 6pm for Rubirosa. We might walk around a bit more afterwards. Maybe walk around the seaport area by our hotel, if time. Get some sleep. I'd like to keep Izzy on a fairly normal sleep schedule for this trip. We should have a pack 'n' play at this hotel.

Thurs. 4/10:

Free breakfast at Best Western Plus

(According to Google Maps) Walk 19 minutes to Battery Park/Statue Cruises. Dug has a 9am pass, so Izzy and I will wander around and he will get a head start on going up to the pedestal (no strollers allowed up). Izzy and I will board a boat at 10am and meet up with Dug. He will take her around the grounds while I go up to the pedestal. Hoping this will work out smoothly. After that, we should be able to stay together for the boat ride to Ellis Island and back to Battery Park. Depending on time and hunger, we may have lunch on site, as I guess there is a good cafe or something on the statue grounds.

Next, we walk 11 minutes to the 9/11 Memorial. Depending on time, we might go to Wall Street first. Our 9/11 Memorial reservations are for 4:30pm.

If we haven't been to Wall Street yet, we walk 9 minutes to get there.

Then we walk 10 minutes back to our hotel.

Dinner is not yet determined for this night, so suggestions are welcome.

Fri. 4/11:

Free breakfast at Best Western Plus

Maybe have bell services hold our luggage, since checkout is 11am and I doubt we'll be back by then.

Cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot (with stroller).

Possibly eat at Grimaldi's for pizza. If we can tolerate the line. Maybe have ice cream at the place nearby, if we are in the mood.

Take the East River Ferry back to the Seaport area.

Walk 7 minutes from the dock to Pearl Street Playground. I just happened to see this on our route on Google Maps and looked it up and found it has a nice toddler area. That would be fun for Izzy!

After a bit of play, walk 2 minutes to Enterprise Car Rental. We have a noon pick-up scheduled. If we aren't up for this walk after the ferry, we could possibly go back to the hotel and have Enterprise pick us up. We'll see.

We'll get our full size car, drive it back to our hotel...oh, wait, so this is why I'm writing this out...just now realized that we won't have Izzy's car seat at that point. I guess we'll either have to have one of us walk back to the hotel with Izzy (5 minutes) or else have them pick us up there. We'll get our luggage, install the car seat, and head out. Google Maps is telling me to take FDR Drive out of town - is that a reasonable drive on a Friday early afternoon?

We'll head up to the B&B, possibly stopping off at Target in Kingston (on the way) if we need anything. We might want to look into other route options too, in case we have time and there is anything scenic. Not sure.

Check in at the B&B is 3pm. This is where we'll have Izzy sleeping in the Peapod (baby sleep tent). I had her play in it this week and she enjoyed it. Then I put it in her crib (just barely fit) for her nap yesterday and she had a great nap in it! In fact, she really wanted to sleep in it that night too (we didn't let her). She loves that thing! :cool1: So, hoping it will be okay during these two nights.

The wedding is Saturday and Izzy is the flower girl. We don't really have plans during the weekend. All meals are provided and we'll be hanging out with family, I'm sure. The place is so remote that they don't even have cell phone coverage and I guess it is very rustic accommodations, so should be an interesting change of pace. Hope we'll have fun!

Check out is 11am on Sunday. At some point, we'll get back in our rental car and hit the road. We're returning the car to the Chelsea Enterprise location, which is near our hotel in Midtown. They open at 3pm, so we don't want to arrive before that (we actually have a 5pm return scheduled). We should probably find a place for lunch on the drive down. Hoping I can handle the little bit of Midtown driving I'll have to do. We called the hotel (Hyatt Place) and they do have a drop off area that we can pull into. So, I'll drop Dug, Izzy, and our luggage/car seat and he can work on getting us checked in while I return the car and walk back.

We haven't made plans for this night, but Dug was talking about maybe walking to Grand Central this evening. I was kind-of interested in walking to the High Line park, but I'm not sure we'll have time. Maybe we'll just hang out with Dug's family, I don't know. Izzy will sleep in a Pack 'n' Play at this hotel.

Mon. 4/14:

Free breakfast at Hyatt Place (available 6:30-9am)

Walk 5 minutes to Empire State Building and try to get there around 8am to avoid crowds. Just carry Izzy in Ergo, so we don't have to bother with a stroller. Go to 86th floor.

Afterwards, stop back at our hotel for the stroller and the "diaper bag".

If we haven't yet, walk 12 minutes to Grand Central. Visit the Apple Store for Dug.

Walk 15 minutes to Times Square. Visit Toys 'R Us and the Disney Store (both open 10am, so after that).

Walk 14 minutes to catch a Central Park Carriage Ride. Not sure how long of one we'll take. This is maybe subject to change, since Dug's sister wants to do it too, but not sure when. Or if we should try to coordinate with them.

Walk 32 minutes to the American Museum of Natural History. Spend some time there, seeing the highlights.

Eat at the nearby Shake Shack. And maybe take a picture of Izzy in front of Isabella's restaurant nearby (it's her name, after all!)

Make our way back to the hotel. Maybe walk, maybe taxi, maybe public transit. Not sure.

Dinner plans are wide open this night.

Tues. 4/15:

Free breakfast at Hyatt Place

Walk 30 minutes to Central Park Zoo. Opens at 10am. See main zoo and children's zoo.

Walk 13 minutes to Alice's Tea Cup. Probably have tea/lunch. Looks fun.

Walk 30 minutes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. See the highlights.

Walk 12 minutes to the Guggenheim Museum. Arrive in time for the "Stroller Tour" from 3-4pm. (I just discovered they do this last night and it sounds cool...waiting to hear back from them if we have a reservation for it).

Walk 55 minutes back to hotel, maybe stopping off at FAO Schwarz or Rockefeller Center on the way, if we have time/energy.

Possible dinner with Dug's family (maybe including his brother, the groom) at Ellen's Stardust Diner. 18 minute walk from hotel. This is up in the air, but we would like to go there. Again, his family is not so much into making plans. :confused3

Weds. 4/16:

Dug's family has Statue of Liberty tickets this day, so we probably won't spend time with the until the airport (same flight).

Free breakfast at Hyatt Place. Probably leave our luggage with bell services, due to a Noon check-out time.

17 minute walk to Rockefeller Center to see Lego Store and Nintendo Store, etc. (if we didn't already). Could go to Top of the Rock, but likely won't.

Walk 10 minutes to FAO Schwarz. Let Izzy have a blast with giant stuffed animals and pianos (again, if we didn't already).

Let Dug play at the Apple Store next door.

Walk 9 minutes to the Museum of Modern Art. See the highlights.

Walk 14 minutes to the New York Public Library. See the original Winnie the Pooh & friends.

Walk 7 minutes back to Hyatt Place.

We need a lunch for this day. Suggestions welcome.

We'll need to have a town car pick us up and bring us to JFK for our 6:35pm flight. Dug's family is sitting near us. I'm thinking, due to the time, we'll probably have to eat dinner at the airport. Again, any suggestions? We have a 2-seat row again and will probably not be able to bring the car seat on (nearly full flight). Hoping that Izzy will go to sleep for the night on this flight. Her bedtime is usually 7pm Central Time. We arrive back at MSP at 8:58pm.

We also need to figure out how we're getting home. Dug needs to talk to his sister and figure out what they are doing (since she's usually our ride). Hoping we can figure something out.

Then, home and bed and work/daycare the next day.

Just a couple general notes:

*I did all of this in Google Maps as "walking", but we are not against taking a taxi/public transit as needed. Just leaving our options open.

*Though Dug loves museums, we probably won't spend a lot of time in any of them, due to Izzy and short toddler attention spans. Which is why there is not a lot of time allocated to them.

So, any feedback? Things we should change or consider? Dining suggestions? Things I've missed? Thanks in advance!

By the way, sorry for all the text and lack of pictures and even smilies! I'm sick with a cold and exhausted, so I need to head to bed, but wanted to get this out there.

Wow, sounds like you're going to see a huge chunk of the city in just a few days! So excited for you!

On your first night I'd suggest going to the lower east side or soho for dinner. There's a gastropub called dbgb (by celeb chef Daniel Boulud) that is really good. It's also casual enough that I wouldn't feel weird about taking a toddler. But you could also check yelp or tripadvisor for those neighborhoods to see what appeals. The area where your hotel is located is a bit of a food desert, IMHO. Also be aware that the whole Wall Steet / lower Manhattan pretty much empties out after business hours, so you may want to taxi it back to your hotel after dinner...not that I think it's really dangerous or anything, it's just sort of....weirdly quiet. Like downtown Minneapolis after 8 on a weeknight...except it's New York!

My favorite lunch spot in midtown is Totto Ramen, but it would probably be too challenging with a stroller. Still, maybe you could take it to go and walk to the High Line which is OMG SO COOL. My favorite thing in New York City, hands down. I didn't suggest it earlier since I wasn't sure it had tourist appeal. But now that I see you're thinking about it, YES!

Oh, and FDR drive starts to build up to rush hour between 330 and 430 on Fridays. It doesn't get really bad until 5 but plan to definitely be out before 430.

For strollers in the restaurant...I haven't done it in NYC but in Chicago this winter we had the stroller and we folded it up (we have a city mini so it folds in half) and then either the hostess told us where we could stash it, or we set it next to our table. The hostesses pretty much had a plan for it every time so i would just ask them the best place to put it. They never seemed surprised or confused about what to do with it.

The biggest thing I'm seeing is all the walking. It's going to be too much. WAY too much! I would really suggest getting a metro pass and taking a bus or subway as much as you can. Honestly, even if you have to flip the stroller closed and carry it down a flight of stairs, it's going to save you a TON of time and stress and pain. With Dug's back issues all that walking is going to kill you. We always take the subway a lot and even with that my back and legs are killing me by the end of the day. Like the 55 min walk back on Tuesday, don't even try it. You'll regret it. Just take the subway!

Google maps will tell you exactly what bus or subway to take and how to walk yourself to the station. We used Google maps on my phone in Chicago and it was VERY easy to navigate with it. So just add the subway card $$ into your budget and save yourself pain and frustration.

Again, I haven't done NYC with a stroller but we did buses and the subway in Chicago and it really wasn't a big deal to quickly unbuckle Caden, I'd pick him up, Andrew would grab the stroller fold strap, we'd walk on the bus or down the subway stairs, flip the stroller back open, and drop Caden back in it, buckle his strap again. And we had blankets and coats and the lovey to juggle too and it really was pretty painless. WAY less pain than walking!!!! lol
Taxis are nice occasionally but with the cost of 1 taxi ride you could buy yourself a subway pass and ride everywhere. And the subway passes work for the buses too.
Basically, I'd do a subway for anything that looks long or is a longer than 15 min walk. And then walk the short distance things. Then jump back on a subway to get back to the hotel, etc.

Otherwise it looks like a FUN trip! :-D Can't wait to hear how it all goes!!

and food ideas, one is Johns Pizzaria. It's near times square and is inside a converted old church. VERY cool and one of our favorite places to eat in NYC. The pizza is GREAT!

Just another thought...did you check about the Statue of Liberty having some sort of stroller check? I wonder if they have somewhere at the base where you can pay $1 or $5 and leave your stroller with them like a coat check and then come back for it after you go up as a family. I would be surprised if they didn't have something like that!

Having never been to NYC before I can't give you much freed back, but it looks like a fun trip! Have a great time!

I'm glad you're taking the Ergo. Would you consider leaving the stroller behind and just carrying your daughter the whole time? The only reason why I say that is because I did a solo trip to Dublin with DS when he was 18 months, and just carried him on my back the whole time. (I'm assuming the Ergo is a front carrier and back carrier? Mine was a mei-tei, a Chinese baby carrier, but more-or-less the same concept. DS was fab. He liked not looking at people's bottoms, he fell asleep when he wanted, and I was easily able to navigate up and down steps and on rickity paths without worrying my stroller wheels would pop off.)

First, I definitely think it is not cool for people to not offer seats to pregnant women, those with babies, the elderly, etc. I always look to offer my seat and actually will just stand even if there are a few open seats just so I don't take the last one. To be that is an obvious one (that said, I try not to judge people that don't get up as you never know what physical limitations they may have that aren't apparent)

To me the dicier situation is a man offering up his seat to a perfectly able woman. I actually did that once at work and got "reprimanded" as that could be considered sexual harassment for insinuating a woman needs a seat more than a man. oh well.

**********************

OK, now chiming in with some thoughts on your NYC trip:

- Totally hear you about wanting to minimize number of bags with having all the baby stuff too. I think as long as you have one carry-on bag (be it Dug's backpack or whatever) that you can at least fit some clean underwear in for an emergency if your bags get lost, you should be ok

-As far as strollers in the restaurants in NYC, most are pretty well equipped to handle it. Depending on how much room they have they may keep it up front or ask you to fold it up, etc. Basically, they will make it work, you just might need to be a little flexible as to what they do with it.

- As far as the diaper bag, as long as you feel you will be able to carry what you need in the changing kit, etc. they I think leaving a giant diaper bag at home makes sense. We have a few sized "diaper" page (the smallest of which sounds similar to your changing kit) and do use that quite often. You could also bring both with you (use the diaper bag as your carry on and pack the changing kit) and then see how things go with just using the changing kit for outings, but at least you have the larger bag in case you find you need it

- Did you look into pre-arranging a town car or do you have a place you know you can just call for one? I've never done that (either had one pre-arranged or just used cabs)

- Definitely see if you have time to walk around the seaport area - assuming the weather is nice it is a very nice place to take in the views, etc.

- The plans for your first day sound good. I always allow a little extra time to walk places - just if you get off the wrong direction or get caught by lights etc. Also, I am awful with directions in the city (just get turned around a lot) so I find I use google maps on my phone to help out a bit

- I don't know that area very well as far as places to eat. There are a number of options near the seaport - I know there is a sushi place called SUteiSHI (I believe I recall you mentioning Dug liked sushi). There are also a lot of places near Wall St. but they are mostly either corporate/business type places or fast food/bars not a lot of family places

- Another option to eat that is closer to the Ground Zero Memorial is Brasserie Les Halles. It's one of the places owned by Anthony Bourdain and actually fairly low key/not super expensive

- There are lots of nice playgrounds in the city. I don't know the Pearl St. one specifically but definitely check it out.

- As far as taking the FDR, you should be ok as long as you are before rush hour (I'd say before 4pm you should be fine). It still might get backed up and seem crowded, but despite that it will still be your best bet vs. just taking avenues with lights or cutting all the way over to the West Side Highway

- There are some nice areas of Kingston and some good restaurants there too if you want to stop. Also, on the other side of the river from Kingston is Rhineback which is a really cool town with tons of great restaurants and very walkable

- Glad Izzy enjoys the peapod. I mentioned that to my wife that you were considering that and she said she knows a number of people who have used that with success ... let me know how it goes!

- Depending on what side of the river you come down there will be a number of places you can stop at for lunch ... heck you could stop at our house since you will (potentially) go right by :rotfl:

- High Line Park is very cool - and I think you will be pretty close to the northern end of it. If the weather is nice might be worth it. There are a lot of street vendor type places on it, though I think they are further south

- Another option is just walk a couple of blocks north to Bryant Park which is on the back side of the NY Public library

- Your plans sound great - though sounds like a lot (though maybe b/c we live so close we never plan "that" much to do in one day). Also, most of the museums have cafeterias that are usually pretty nice so you can also do that.

- If you go to Rockefeller center, if you are into this, there is a really good wine bar there called Morrell Wine Bar & Cafe

- Does seem like you have a lot of walking (and don't forget that there will be a lot of walking at your destinations - museums, etc.) so if you get tired plan on some public transportaiton. Cabs can work and Subways are efficient (especially when you don't need to deal with a stroller)

- There are a lot of places to eat near where you are staying - you can just ask the front desk or concierge for recomendations. You can also just google search for family friendly restaurants in the areas you will be at.

Thank you all for the feedback! Just wanted to pop in and let you know I'm reading everything and it's very helpful. Not sure if I'll have time to do full responses before we go - if I have a slow moment at work, maybe. But thanks! :goodvibes

Catching up a bit....

First of all, have a great time on your NYC trip! It sounds like a jam-packed fun little vacation. I'm sure Izzy is going to look adorable as the flower girl. :flower3:

And I have to say, traveling with a toddler to both NYC and Hawaii in one year has me applauding your energy levels and patience. :rotfl2:

Glad your Kona breakfast was tasty. Not to mention it sounds like it was a pretty easy going meal, and that's the best kind when dining with a baby.:lmao:

I had no idea there were no lines or designated areas at the Poly bus stop. Wow. That just sounds like it would be a disaster.

I'll admit, I was always one of those people who gave up my seat on the bus. It really surprises me that nobody would offer you their seat. People have gotten considerably ruder over the years. Sorry you had to try and not fall over and hold Izzy at the same time.

Lots of updates to comment on!! First of all I love the 18-month photos, they are all beautiful, and definitely capture her spirit!!

Next, I am astonished that no one gave you their seat. I can see Dug, being a guy and not wearing a "I have a bad back" sign, no one would prob get up for him, but with you holding Izzy that is another story. I would be angry! Especially seeing opportunities like kids could sit in parents laps and such. (and of course knowing you were there first at the bus stop, and I'm sure some people knew that). ANyway...Kona is fantastic huh!! mmm!!

Ok and on to NYC! I was reading this post and then looked at the time and thought to myself you must have just landed! so cool!! Hope you have a blast! Love your plans. It got me thinking that Disney has been awesome to teach me how to plan trips - your trip sounded much like a WDW trip with planning dining, fitting in a playground visit!!

Can't wait to see all the pics!! :goodvibes

I am sure we will see no more updates until after your trip to NYC so just wanted to pop over and say have fun and safe travels to you and your family!!

:wave2:

Hi, everybody! I don't know that I'll have time to do this each night, but here I am tonight with a mini-NYC update! The only reason this is happening is that Izzy wouldn't allow me to go to bed (well, without a tantrum), so I have to hide across the room until she goes to sleep (I think she finally is, but I'm writing this up anyway, since I already made notes and uploaded pics). And Dug was planning to use his laptop (I didn't bring mine), but he passed out before Izzy, so here I am on his computer. :rotfl: I'm sure he has more pictures, and maybe I'll share those when I get home, but I'm just going with the ones on my phone for now. Not sure when I'll respond to comments, but here's something for now:

Our goal was to leave the house by 6am. Having learned from our way-later-than-planned departure for WDW, we only were 30 minutes late, leaving the house at 6:30am. I dropped Dug and Izzy at the airport and went to Dug's sister's house. She gave me and our luggage a ride back to the airport and we used the skycap to check our two bags. We did successfully manage to pack without rolling carry-ons. Just two checked bags, bursting at the seams, and Izzy's makeshift "diaper bag" and Dug's backpack (and a stroller and a car seat).

We were lucky enough to get the "family" security line (they sent us there, due to Izzy). It was AWESOME!!! No need to take off shoes, no need to remove a laptop or a belt or a 3-1-1 bag (which we didn't have anyway, due to checking everything). It was slick and fast. And they were nice. We were through in no time and on our way to breakfast with plenty of time to spare. By the way, our flight was 10:05am, but we'd been told that security lines had been very long at MSP and to plan for more than 2 hours between arrival and flight. We had a bunch of time to kill now.

On the way to breakfast, we made a quick restroom stop. Here's Dug and Izzy waiting for me:

We went to French Meadow Bakery for breakfast. Everything looked delicious. I ended up getting the omelette of the day and Dug got a croissant sandwich. Both great! We shared with Izzy and she had a pouch and some milk we brought:

Oh, and she shared with Minnie, of course:

After we ate, there was still time and Dug had some things he needed to take care of online, so Izzy and I roamed the area. She had a blast running around and up and down a ramp. The coolest thing was that we found a "family room" (right across from the restaurant). I only wish it had a door, because it couldn't contain Izzy:

But pretty sweet! Would have been a good place to hang out if she didn't just charge right out of it, laughing.

We also wandered a candy store where she found fun toys and was like, well, a kid in a candy store. :rotfl2: :

Since it was hard to drag Dug away from what he was working on, we did not arrive at the gate as soon as I would have liked. First Class was starting to board. Dug took Izzy for a diaper change while I worked on getting the stroller and car seat in their gate check bags (we asked and there were no seats for the car seat). A super nice flight attendant nearby offered to help bag the stroller. She said she had a grandkid and had done it a bunch. Super helpful, since you have to get it in the bag exactly right and it still just barely zips. Thank goodness for an extra set of hands! The car seat bag wasn't nearly as fitted, so that was easy.

Dug came back and we handed off the gate check items and took Izzy, the Ergo, and our two small carry-ons and boarded, just before regular boarding. We sort-of got settled before everyone started coming through.

So, the main thing I have to say about the flight (and true of other parts of today also), is that 18 months is a much more difficult travel age than 14 months. At least for Izzy. She was a breeze in December. Slept most of the way. She was kind-of a terror this time. Very toddler-like: quick to anger over anything and everything, writhing around like a wild animal, loud as can be (both crying and babbling), and the shortest attention span ever. I actually brought a lot of toys and they barely amused her for any time at all. We were churning through them. The person in front of us closed the window shade (between our rows) and Izzy was ANGRY. The cookies from the flight attendant were a hit, though. And so it went, ups and downs, laughs and cries, endlessly. After she finished her cookies, we tried to get her to take her nap (about the right time). Put her in the Ergo, brought out the blankies and teddy. Snuggled. Not interested. The most she did was quiet down and snuggle for a few seconds before jumping back up again. In fact, she actually figured out how to stand up while in the Ergo when I am seated. She desperately wanted to press the flight attendant call button (and could reach it), she kept pushing on the seat in front of us with her feet, she hit and scratched me in the face (mostly by accident in her madness). It was rough. No nap for me. Or her. And we had been well-prepared. So happy when the flight finally landed (even though she was screaming at the time). On the plus side, I'm pretty sure she made friends with the guy seated behind Dug. I saw him smile at her when he came back from the restroom and Izzy was all flirty in his direction after that. :rotfl2:

Thank goodness we had an awesome flight attendant. She even gave Izzy her wings. When we got off the plane, I realized that my fitbit (fancy pedometer) had fallen out of it's holster and the flight attendant found it and then helped us navigate the airport and find the elevator, etc. She was super sweet and helpful!

Once we got our bags, we called the town car company (Quick Ride Corp) and let them know (we had reserved earlier that morning at breakfast). Within about 5 minutes, a black Toyota minivan came for us. Driver was nice and helpful with the bags. I went to attach Izzy's carseat, though, and couldn't find any LATCH anchors anywhere! :scared1: I only know how to install with LATCH and it was required in all vehicles since like 2003 or so. I can't imagine this van was that old, but there was nothing. However, the driver was familiar and he was able to help quickly secure the seat with a seat belt. Got Izzy in and we got going:

I started my game of trying to take pictures of Izzy in front of cool things we passed:

See the ferris wheel?

During this ride, I discovered that Izzy thinks winking is hilarious. We had some good laughs. :rotfl2:

Soon enough, the lack of nap started making those eyelids heavy:

She drifted off to sleep for the second half of the ride. We passed more things:

We got to our hotel and checked in. The front desk staff was nice and told us they honored our room requests and got us a great room. They were right - we have a sweet view of the Brooklyn Bridge and a very spacious room with space for the Pack 'n' Play (sorry, Dug took those pics, so I don't have them right now). We had to wait a few minutes for the room to be ready, but they had cookies. Izzy enjoyed getting all sugared up today:

We headed to our room. Izzy enjoyed the window seat. I got her bedtime area ready and unpacked what we'd need later. Soon, we set off again, with Izzy in her stroller.

We walked through Chinatown. Stopped at the ice cream factory there and got some unique flavors (I got mango papaya...yum!). We took them down to a park and enjoyed. Izzy loved the ice cream! She also got a little out-of-stroller time and got to sit on these rocks:

After Chinatown, we walked through Little Italy. Drooled over some yummy cannoli, but didn't get any. Funny how all the restaurants send a guy outside to tell every passer-by that they should come in for dinner. We had to go a bit past Little Italy to get to our dinner.

We got to our destination, Rubiroba, about 5 minutes before our 6pm reservation. Dug brought Izzy in to check in while I folded her stroller. I guess the hostess gave him a bit of attitude for being "early" and said there was no place for a stroller. :confused3 I guess she found one, though, and we were seated and she instructed us to put it against the side of the table. I will say that the restaurant is really long and skinny, so I was glad our stroller folds so well and is easy to carry.

We ordered an appetizer of mini rice balls, a small gnocchi with mini meatballs, and a small vodka sauce pizza, along with a drink for Dug. Everything was delicious and we LOVED this meal. Izzy enjoyed it too, especially using her little take-and-toss fork and spoon. And the cheddar bunnies I brought were a hit. Good waiter also. Overall, worth the walk! Happy diners:

Afterwards, Dug wanted to walk another couple blocks to see the building from the final scene of When Harry Met Sally, so we did that. It's an REI now, by the way. :rotfl:

We were right next to a subway station then, and I asked Dug if he wanted to ride back, as there was a route that goes close to our hotel. But he had looked up walking tour info on the area while we ate and wanted to go back on foot and see things. So, we walked. He regretted it. Not worth the back pain. We made it back, though. He passed out after helping change Izzy.

Izzy was not happy about going to bed. She normally goes down pretty easily at home. She was a mess here. Hoping the rest of the trip gets better. At least it sounds like she's been asleep for some time now. Hope I can get to bed without waking her. I need some sleep. I've had a cold and it's mostly passed, but I have almost no voice right now. I'm all squeaky and inaudible. It's awful.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the mini-TR. Not sure if I'll be back again, but we'll see. Thanks for checking in on us, everyone! :goodvibes Tomorrow is Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial, Wall Street, and I'm thinking about that French place that TheMaxRebo recommended for dinner. Hope we have a fun day!

Yay! Sounds so fun!

What a bummer on Izzys flight and sleeping though...this scares me for our WDW trip!! Maddie will be 27 months by then so let's hope this is a phase that comes between 16 and 26 months, lol!!

So glad you had such great flight attendants and waiters! Woohoo!

Can't wait to hear more when you get a chance or when you get home!!
