Beaches Resorts - Jamaica and Turks & Caicos

We're staying in the same type of room. Please if you could, let me know how it is when you get back? And maybe a picture or two if it's not asking too much?

As for the pictures :scared1:. Someone sent me a copy of the price sheet and I was floored at how expensive they are. Unless their photographers can photoshop my head onto Kim Karsdashian's body, I would NEVER pay that much for pictures. Maybe I'll purchase 1 or 2 of my daughter, but that's it.

MommaSnow: I was thinking about bringing walkie talkies, so I'm glad you mentioned that. :thumbsup2

sure. I can definitely do that. My sister is a travel agent. she just went to Beaches for a site tour and stayed in the Caribbean Village. She said it was "dated" and decorated in "old style caribbean" but it was clean and still nice. My brother goes every June and stays in some suite in the Italian Village. I am just happy we are going so the cheapest room on the propery is ok by me! :goodvibes She also told me that beach towels go fast so grab them when you can, and extra, b/c sometimes in the afternoon there were none to be found.

I am afraid to ask, but do you remember how much they charge per picture?

where do you buy walkie talkies that will actually work? Is this what most families bring along with them? I know Verizon you can add the Int'l call plan for a month for $30 or something...but I have read reports of spotty cell service.

Tiffsix: are you back yet? How was your trip? Anything you can share? Hope you had a fantastic time and warm, sunny weather!

Anyone else been there recently? We're under 2 months! Getting excited. Would love to see more pics, especially if anyone has stayed in the main buildings, older section rooms!

yes! it was wonderful!!! I posted a lengthy review on tripadvisor. same screen name. read it if you can. you will have a fantastic time!!!

Thanks for your trip report. So glad you had a fantastic time. I read some other trips reports as well and, unfortunately, we will be arriving on a Saturday. I'll just have to remember to pack extra snacks extra patience. ;) Sorry to hear about your first room, but I will make sure to speak up if we have a problem. My daughter has asthma so I can't afford to have a moldy/musty smell in our room.

ETA: just checked the website and the resort is sold out accept for one category which is way above what we're paying. I hope we don't have a room issue because I can't stay in a moldy/musty room for a week. :( And I guess this means the airport will be a madhouse. Better start drinking on the plane.

Great can't wait to read it! We're at 3 months and counting! :thumbsup2

I just found this thread. I have been to Beaches Negril once just for the day and I have been at Beaches Turks and Caicos twice. My last stay was for a total of 9 nights/10 days with about 20 friends and family members. We stayed in a Venetian Family Suite in the Italian Village. We did the character breakfast (my 21 month old son loved it). My daughter was 13 at the time and she LOVED the teen activities. I had to beg her to eat dinner with us instead of with the teen club. We utilized Camp Sesame and my friends' girls did the Martha Stewart craft classes and loved them. I have never found a vacation that caters to all ages so well. The beach is gorgeous, definitely one of the best I have been to and I have been to several islands. I would be happy to answer any questions if anyone is planning to go there any time soon.

Thank you for your post. Glad to hear about the teen club. I'm hoping my daughter and her friend will enjoy being on their own, and yet still be sort of supervised, KWIM? 23 more days. I'm getting nervous about it being crowded, since the resort is sold out, and about our room. I'll sleep on the balcony if I have to.

My daughter even went out on a boat trip with the teen club. She really enjoyed it. She didn't have any friends that traveled with us but she made friends quickly.

I stayed in a Turquoise Deluxe Room on my first stay. It is a decent size just basic hotel room. There is nothing bad about it but just didn't have anything exciting about it either, but honestly you are paying for the resort and all of its amenities (it really is amazing) not your room. You will be fine in the CV.

You do not need reservations at any of the restaurants except for Kimono's which is nice but means you may wait for a table sometimes. If you want to eat at Kimono's make sure you make a reservation as soon as you check in. You can sit at the sushi bar without reservations. You can even take out sushi after 8pm.

I'm not sure if you were asking about an excursion/cruise or if that was someone else I have to go back and actually read, lol. However, check out www.caicosdreamtours.com. I have not personally used them but they get great reviews. We did do the ATV tour because my daughter really wanted to but I have to say it was definitely NOT worth it.

Oh and the Caribbean and Italian Villages both have laundry facilities. This came in handy for us because we were originally supposed to be there for 7 nights which turned into 9 nights unexpectedly when Hurricane Tomas paid us a visit and closed the airport for 2 days (nothing scary but the airport did close). The resort was wonderful about keeping all guests updated on the hurricane and taking all precautions. At any rate, when our stay got extended we needed to do laundry.

The airport is teeny tiny! It does take a long time to clear customs and immigration upon arrival and you do deplane on the tarmac and walk into the airport. It wasn't a problem, I just know some people do not expect this.

TinkPirateMom, thanks for your further updates. We did book the teen cruise for the girls, as well as a cruise for the four of us. I believe it's a snorkeling, beach barbeque type cruise. Looking forward to it!

I've heard stories about the airport, so I'll just need to buy extra water and snacks and extra patience. ;) I went to Sandals in Jamaica for my honeymoon and we deplaned on the tarmac and walked to a little hut that was the airport so I'm prepared for that aspect too. :rotfl: I must admit I was flabbergasted the first time. I don't travel much so I was completely out of my element.

Glad to hear you had a great trip and very grateful for your sharing your experiences. Before too long I will be having my own experiences.

Most of the time, we stay at Beaches Turks & Caicos and we love it!! But next month we are heading to Beaches Sandy Bay.

Finishing up my scuba certification this weekend so I can enjoy the free scuba diving down there.

Here's to all of us who love to spend our free time on the coast of somewhere beautiful!!

Have a blast down there!!!! :cool1:

We got back about a week ago. Had a fabulous time! The resort is beautiful. We stayed in the Caribbean village, in a governor's one-bedroom suite on the ground floor. The room was huge and mostly comfortable. Yes, the decor is dated, but that doesn't matter to us, the important thing is that it was clean and spacious. The reason I say it was only "mostly" comfortable is that the a/c vent was in the sitting room/kid's bedroom (day bed with trundle) and there was no vent in the king bedroom. So the sitting/kid's room would get pretty cold in an attempt to cool off the master bedroom, while the master bedroom never got quite cool enough (though not unbearably warm or anything). We never noticed any moldy or musty smells, but one night we got a knock on the door with an employee offering to spray our room with air freshener, so maybe someone else in the building had complained about a smell. :confused3

We spent most of our pool time at the Cascade pool in the CV. It was quieter than the Italian village pool, better drinks at the swim up bar, the kids liked the waterfall/cave there and we all liked that the water was cool and refreshing. The IV pool was overheated, in our opinion. It didn't even feel refreshing to get in, it felt like a bathtub. This was nice on a cool day (and we had some of those) but not generally what we are looking for. The IV was definitely newer, fancier, flashier. We never went to the French Village pool.

The beach in front of the hotel is beautiful, but narrow, and it took some time to find lounge chairs on the beach when we'd head down there at 10:00 or later. We always found at least two, though, which is enough for our family of four, since we're spending more time in the water than just laying there, anyway. We snorkeled right in front of the hotel and saw various fish and a couple of stingrays. One day we walked down to the coral reef in front of the Coral Gardens hotel. Very nice snorkeling there, lots of fish and coral.

We did the half day snorkel/conch cruise with Caicos Dream Tours and it was great! At first we were a little disappointed when we saw their basic little boats, which don't look near as impressive as Beaches' Kitty Kat, but we loved our tour. While the boats are smaller and don't have that slide in the back, they are shaded and have bathrooms, and less people. We dove for conch, pulled it right out of the shell and the guys made a delicious "salad" out of it (more like a salsa, though, just conch, tomatoes, peppers and hot sauce). It was great on the Doritos they handed out. They also took us to the reef for some great snorkeling.

We had a lot of overcast days and some rain, but that didn't matter. You can still enjoy snorkeling, water slides and the lazy river in the rain, and the swim up bars are covered, so they are a good place to hang out as well! :drinking:

Our kids (8 and 13) didn't want to go to the kids/teens club. They just hung out with us, or each other. I think the 13yo would have had more fun if she'd met people her age, but she didn't want to make an effort to do that, and still had a great time with the rest of the family. We really never saw the teen club kids. We saw the kids in my younger dd's age group, and they seemed to be having a good time, though it was mostly boys in the group that week, so that turned my dd off even more from trying it out. :rotfl:

Pool towels were hard to find in the afternoons. There were plenty up until 11:00 or noon, but then they'd run out and the bins were rarely replenished. We quickly learned you need to hold on to your towels all day, so either take them to lunch with you, or stop back at the room to drop them off/pick them up. Only twice did we see clean towels in the bins in the afternoon. Bins are bigger at the CV pools than the IV, plus less people use those pools, so if you're at the IV pool and they're out, try the Cascade or Iguana pool.

Food was great. We only waited for a table once, at Schooner's for dinner. We are not picky eaters or food snobs, but we enjoy good food and the food here was generally very good. Even at the buffets, the food was replenished often and was hot and fresh. (except the french toast at breakfast, but it's kind of hard to keep them from getting soggy at a buffet). The pizza at Bella Napoli was really greasy. It was definitely the worst meal we had.

The only restaurant you need a reservation for is Kimono's. It was OK -- about on the level of Teppan Edo at Epcot, not as good as most hibachi restaurants you'll find across the country. We enjoyed Cricketer's, Reflection's, Mario's, Barefoot on the Beach (really good and great location!), Guiseppe's and Arizona's. Didn't go to either of the adult only restaurants.

Hmm, what else? I'll add if I think of anything else. Overall great resort, great time! Hated to leave and come back home.

Have a blast down there!!!! :cool1:

Thanks again for all your help. I feel much better prepared now. And enjoy your trip as well. Can't wait to here about it. :thumbsup2

Mrs. Toad: thank you so much for your trip report. Glad to hear you had a wonderful time and I'm always grateful for any tips I can get (towels, beach chairs, etc.).

Well only 3 days to go! :woohoo:

Just thought I would post an FYI for anyone who hasn't gone yet. Tried to do online check-in today and it wouldn't let me. I misread the information and thought I could check in anytime within 4 days of arrival. Apparently you have to check in a minimum of 4 days before arrival. Guess I've got Disney on the brain.

I just got back from a cruise where we visited Jamaica. I have vacationed there before and had a good experience (Couples, Ocho Rios), but it is a really depressing drive to get to your resort from the airport. We saw a guy walking next to the highway with a machine gun (didn't seem to be a soldier or police man!). If I had the means to choose T&C, that would be my choice.

Yes, the online check in has to be done at least 4 days in advance. However, I don;t think you missed out on much by not doing it. Most of the time they make you fill everything out again at check in and I end up wondering why I bothered. Have a great trip!

Yes, Jamaica is very impoverished, but I find the locals to be extremely friendly and generally feel safe traveling there. I have been to Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Rose Hall, Lucea, and Negril. I like Negril the best, particularly Couples Negril.

Turks and Caicos is a much more expensive island to travel to so I thought the island would be more upscale but it really wasn't. It is also difficult to finad any locals to chat with. Most in the hospitality industry there come from different islands.

The funny thing to me was the only local we talked to was born there, but his parents were American. They called him "Chico Blanco" - White Guy. Pretty funny!

Enjoy your trip and bring LOTS of sunscreen!

WOOOO HOOOOOO!!! I just know you're going to love our 'home away from home'!!!!!! It is SOOOOO beautiful there. You will want to go back again and again!! (changed my font to look more like the beautiful T&C water but it doesn't come close!)
