We got back about a week ago. Had a fabulous time! The resort is beautiful. We stayed in the Caribbean village, in a governor's one-bedroom suite on the ground floor. The room was huge and mostly comfortable. Yes, the decor is dated, but that doesn't matter to us, the important thing is that it was clean and spacious. The reason I say it was only "mostly" comfortable is that the a/c vent was in the sitting room/kid's bedroom (day bed with trundle) and there was no vent in the king bedroom. So the sitting/kid's room would get pretty cold in an attempt to cool off the master bedroom, while the master bedroom never got quite cool enough (though not unbearably warm or anything). We never noticed any moldy or musty smells, but one night we got a knock on the door with an employee offering to spray our room with air freshener, so maybe someone else in the building had complained about a smell.
We spent most of our pool time at the Cascade pool in the CV. It was quieter than the Italian village pool, better drinks at the swim up bar, the kids liked the waterfall/cave there and we all liked that the water was cool and refreshing. The IV pool was overheated, in our opinion. It didn't even feel refreshing to get in, it felt like a bathtub. This was nice on a cool day (and we had some of those) but not generally what we are looking for. The IV was definitely newer, fancier, flashier. We never went to the French Village pool.
The beach in front of the hotel is beautiful, but narrow, and it took some time to find lounge chairs on the beach when we'd head down there at 10:00 or later. We always found at least two, though, which is enough for our family of four, since we're spending more time in the water than just laying there, anyway. We snorkeled right in front of the hotel and saw various fish and a couple of stingrays. One day we walked down to the coral reef in front of the Coral Gardens hotel. Very nice snorkeling there, lots of fish and coral.
We did the half day snorkel/conch cruise with Caicos Dream Tours and it was great! At first we were a little disappointed when we saw their basic little boats, which don't look near as impressive as Beaches' Kitty Kat, but we loved our tour. While the boats are smaller and don't have that slide in the back, they are shaded and have bathrooms, and less people. We dove for conch, pulled it right out of the shell and the guys made a delicious "salad" out of it (more like a salsa, though, just conch, tomatoes, peppers and hot sauce). It was great on the Doritos they handed out. They also took us to the reef for some great snorkeling.
We had a lot of overcast days and some rain, but that didn't matter. You can still enjoy snorkeling, water slides and the lazy river in the rain, and the swim up bars are covered, so they are a good place to hang out as well!
Our kids (8 and 13) didn't want to go to the kids/teens club. They just hung out with us, or each other. I think the 13yo would have had more fun if she'd met people her age, but she didn't want to make an effort to do that, and still had a great time with the rest of the family. We really never saw the teen club kids. We saw the kids in my younger dd's age group, and they seemed to be having a good time, though it was mostly boys in the group that week, so that turned my dd off even more from trying it out.
Pool towels were hard to find in the afternoons. There were plenty up until 11:00 or noon, but then they'd run out and the bins were rarely replenished. We quickly learned you need to hold on to your towels all day, so either take them to lunch with you, or stop back at the room to drop them off/pick them up. Only twice did we see clean towels in the bins in the afternoon. Bins are bigger at the CV pools than the IV, plus less people use those pools, so if you're at the IV pool and they're out, try the Cascade or Iguana pool.
Food was great. We only waited for a table once, at Schooner's for dinner. We are not picky eaters or food snobs, but we enjoy good food and the food here was generally very good. Even at the buffets, the food was replenished often and was hot and fresh. (except the french toast at breakfast, but it's kind of hard to keep them from getting soggy at a buffet). The pizza at Bella Napoli was really greasy. It was definitely the worst meal we had.
The only restaurant you need a reservation for is Kimono's. It was OK -- about on the level of Teppan Edo at Epcot, not as good as most hibachi restaurants you'll find across the country. We enjoyed Cricketer's, Reflection's, Mario's, Barefoot on the Beach (really good and great location!), Guiseppe's and Arizona's. Didn't go to either of the adult only restaurants.
Hmm, what else? I'll add if I think of anything else. Overall great resort, great time! Hated to leave and come back home.
