Be aware if traveling to WDW within the next few days

Wow we seemed to dodge this since it was going around while we were there, although we all got a very nasty head cold which I would take gladly over the stomach virus any day. Hope everyone stays well who are there now and those that are sick get well soon!

I hear ya. I was in the hospital for 4 days this summer with bacterial pneumonia and it was better than a 12-hour stomach bug!!:worship: I'm not kidding! I'd rather not be able to breathe than be vomiting....

Leaving in 12 days and hoping with two small kids we don't get sick! We're well stocked with the wet wipes (we constantly have those anyway). I worry about my son most because he's a CONSTANT thumb sucker and it's next to IMPOSSIBLE to keep his thumb out of his mouth. My dh is invariably sick on ALL VACATIONS so I pray he doesn't get sick while there. I'll gladly take a head cold over this virus anyday!

My 8yo bro kept touching handrails, counters, etc. and putting his hands in his mouth and was fine. I think the bug is starting to pass- or so I hope. I go back in three weeks to start my job at WDW and don't want to get sick then!

We've been home for 24hrs now so I'm safe to say that we were there from 20th to 27th Dec and were fine. :yay: Didn't see anyone being ill or talking about it, so maybe, just maybe, it's decreasing. From reading this thread there seems to have been more people reporting illness at the beginning of Dec.
I am very grateful to folk on here telling us about it so we could take precautions. We washed our hands a lot, used a Benzalkonium hand cleanser (which Doctor husband says will kill anything), tried to stop DD9 from touching everthing and then chewing her fingers and postponed a Cape May buffet until next trip. I know you could catch it anywhere but doing a buffet in supposedly the worst hit resort seemed like asking for trouble!

I am one of those germ freaks and we still got it. I even had those doctor masks for my kids to wear on the bus and my husband said I was crazy so I did not make them wear them. I had read about the virus before we left. We all had it on Thanksgiving so I thought we would be immune to it. We washed are hands like crazy and used bacteria lotion too. We still got it. I think it was something with housekeeping. We stayed at AKL and the couple in the room next to us had it at the same time.

:thumbsup2 You sound like us. We did basically the exact same things you did and are fine. We've been home 24 hrs. and no sign of anything.

I always thought it would be fun to work at WDW. Hope you enjoy your new job there. Can you say where you'll be working? If not, it's ok. Best Wishes!

Do you think there is any advantage to keeping the "do not disturb" sign on the door so that Mousekeeping doesn't have to come in and clean? I know it's not the fault of the mousekeeping that the virus is all over at WDW, but with cross contamination worries I wonder if that'd be best (and considering we usually don't NEED our room cleaned daily it wouldn't bother us one bit).

Also, do they wash the comforters in between guests? I've always heard they don't and we NEVER touch those things at any hotel anyway (I always roll them off when we get there).

Well that's good to know!
Good luck with your new job!

We don't use the comforters either. I think after mousekeeping comes I'll still go and wipe everything down with bleach wipes that way I can try to keep on top of the cross contamination. Every little bit helps I guess :confused3

We just got back last night after the 3 year old touched every hand rail and ate her snacks she dropped on every surface of WDW :scared1: and thank goodness, we survived WDW STOMACH BUG 2008! We did have to make a trip to the first aid and the nurses said it was still taking a toll at the parks and resorts. We talked to a few families missing dads or moms who got it and had to stay in their rooms.
I used a lot of hand gel and we washed our hands frequently. I hope it is on it's way out, but the official flu season hasn't even hit yet. :sad2:
They do not wash the comforters very often. :scared1: We just wiped down every door handle and remote in our room each day with a clorox wipe.

Sorry to hear about your family getting this nasty bug. I am a germ freak too so I was scared the entire time we were there. You had it Thanksgiving too!?!?!? That's just not fair! Hope you all are better now. :goodvibes

This didn't happen to us this year but it sounds like the same exact thing that happened to us last Dec. We had a girls trip (myself, dd and mom) and stayed at AKL 12/15 - 12/22. A couple days into our trip dd starting with diahrrea and vomiting it lasted for about 24 hours and the hotel was wonderful. A few days later my mom woke up with the same thing and spent two days in the room sick. I luckily didn't catch it. I hate to hear so many of you got sick on your vacation because we know exactly how you feel, it's no fun. Hope everyone is feeling better now and that the virus is about over with at the parks.

Benzalkonium hand cleanser?? Does anyone have a brand name and a location as to where I can purchase this??? Thank you in advance!!

Actually I won't find out till I move down on the 21st of January.:thumbsup2 Thanks!:goodvibes

I'm getting the impression the bug is starting to die. I think it's run it's course for awhile- or so I'm hoping. Having this one time  is one time too many!

I bought Wet Ones Wipes at Walmart. Well actually I bought 4 packs of the BIG ONES (35 in each pack). I'm actually debating on getting more and using them to wipe down the room! Just be careful not to get the sensitive kind because they didn't list Benzowhatever as an active ingredient.

I really hope you're right!

I bought the professional Chlorox wipes for my room and will be bringing a beach based cleanser. I'm also going to be bringing my own blanket. However I will use the wetones for my table area and washing my hands before I eat. I'll need to get some ziploc bags for trash...my list keeps getting bigger and bigger!
