Barking dogs are so obnoxious, don't you think?

As I sit here my neighbor's dog is barking in the background. Last Sunday the dog was out at 6:50AM and barked for 1.5 hours. He also lets the dog out (to go to the bathroom) at around 11pm at which time the dog barks for 5-10 minutes. Don't you think that people with barking dogs should go out WITH the dog if it is early in the AM or late PM so the dog doesn't bother people? I have called him a few times about the dog and it isn't as bad as it used to be, but geesh be considerate! Barking dogs really bug me. (Actually the owners of the barking dogs bug me.)

Also, are there any muzzles that dogs can wear to prevent barking?

Throw a big juicy steak over to him, and he'll stop barking for hours.

I'm with you on this one, my neighbor also lets their dog out early in the morning and the dog goes to the corner of their yare right by my bedroom window and barks. I always make sure my dog is in the second she even looks like she is going to start barking.

i will trade you neighbors!!!! mine are obnoxious (insert really bad word here!)**clearing my throat** i'm sorry i meant people! anyway i would take a barking dog over their yelling at each other at all hours of the day. they just dont care. and i dont mean inside. they hollar at each other outside. it is sooo bad my friend that is 5 houses away can hear them. i am not kidding. and to make matters worse-they yell at their kid too. and he is only 2 yrs old. and you should hear the language they use. and i thought i needed my mouth washed out with soap!!! i call my one friend and ask her if i have told her how much i hate my neighbors lately? i save the word hate for really special occasions because it is such a strong word. but i cant stand these people!

sorry to vent. but hey, you started a how much i hate my neighbor thread just when i needed it most!! thank you!

Oh yes I understand what you're going through! This dog from #%$@ and it's family (I call them The Osbornes) moved next door last Dec. and the dog (it's a Shih Tzu) is nuts to say the least. Whenever we or anyone else for that matter approaches our door he rushes to the gate and fence and literally slams his body into it and starts to bark like a mad dog! I'm actually afraid it's going to cause someone to have a heart attack, it's that bad.

We can't sit outside in our backyard or do any gardening as "it" is always out. To make matters worse my DH works shifts (Including weekends and nights) and is trying to sleep with "it" barking and barking at anything or sometimes nothing at all! (can you tell this has been a thorn in my side for a while?)

We're actually at the stage that we're considering moving as they have 3 grown kids that are "off the wall too" Phew.......I guess I needed to vent. My sympathy goes out to all that have "lovely neighbours"

You really hit a nerve with me! A new family moved into our neighborhood about six months ago, and they leave their dog tied in the backyard most of the time. He barks non-stop for looong periods of time, making me nuts. I can't understand how these people can be so insensitive to their neighbors to let this go on and on and on...

So, have you guys tried calling your neighbors about the dogs? When I call my next door neighbor he seems to quiet the dog a little, but it still bugs me. Then, over time, the dog goes back to his old routine. Also I have neighbors across the street somewhere- can't tell which house because it is wooded- that have annoying dogs too. I don't even know who to call about them.

I called the police, just to get information once. They said what they do is send an officer out to the house to tell the owners that the dog has been bothering the neighbors and will they please quiet the dog. They don't get in any trouble or get fined or anything. I haven't gotten to that point yet. I'd rather try to work with my neighbor and maintain the friendly relationship we have. Also I think our noise ordinance (or really lack thereof) is very lax.

Ok, I understand that if a dogs barking is causing a disturbance to the neighbors, the owner should do something about it, but a muzzel to prevent barking?? That would be like putting a piece of duct tape over your child's mouth if he/she was talking too much and it's cruel. The dog probably doesn't have the greatest owner in the world and they didn't train it properly. Don't punish the dog, blame the owner.

Used to have (thankfully I am saying used to have a neighbor who had a black German Shepherd. They would let this dog out and he would bark for hours. Used to drive me batty. They sat in their house and apparently ignored the fact that he was barking almost constantly.

I love dogs (if they are friendly), but I have no patience for barking dogs and owners who don't give a darn if the dog is driving the neighbors nuts or not.

Some dogs bark and some dogs don't and it doesn't matter all the time about the owner. I have two dogs one is a barky pain in the A** the other is very quiet. I do agree that when you have a yappy dog you do need to go out with it . My yapper knows that when she starts she has to come in and she does reluctanly but she comes in. You really can't stop that behavior you have to train the person to bring the dog in. I use to think that it was little dogs but my neighbor has a Norweigian Elk hound and that dog barks at 6AM every morning including Sat and Sun. He is the nicest dog so I just roll over. I think that neighbors mowing the lawn at 7 AM is rude too.

I don't really see what is wrong with muzzling a dog to prevent barking (if you can really do that) if it is just for a short period of time, say 5-10 minutes. I don't see that as cruel. I do think it is cruel to my children who wake up at 11pm when they have school the next day.

Have any of you ever thought that your neighbor is not hearing it. I know I do not hear mine if they bark. My daughters will let me know if they are home but if I am home alone I have no idea if they are barking. My sweet neighbor on one side will tell me. My neighbor on the other side will just curse me out. Good thing I can just turn my back to her and not hear a thing.

I bought a bark collar for my Hunter. Call it cruel if you will but he knows he cannot bark once I put the collar on him! I try to be a considerate dog owner. I had my back yard fenced in so nobody could complain about him doing his business in their yards, so what do I find on the other side of my house??? I can't stand irresponsible pet owners!

I can't stand when my own dog barks, lol, nevermind someone else's! If we're outside and my dog barks and won't stop, she goes inside and into her crate until she can calm down. (And I have a Corgi, they LOVE to bark at anything!!)

I've also got problem neighbors -- they have 2 rotties. We've tried talking to them -- fat lot of good that did.

Then I checked the laws in my area and started calling the police -- our law is that it's a petty misdemeanor for an owner to let his dog bark 10 minutes straight or 30 minutes intermittently. In response to our calls, the police have come several times. Unfortunately, the dogs only bark when the owners are not at home. That's when they're left outside as security.

So we are now on option three -- we purchased an anti-barking device -- I believe ours is called Bark Free. I've seen others at pet stores and in specialty pet catalogues. The way it works is that everytime the dog barks, it emits a sound only the dog can hear which is supposed to be exceedingly annoying to the dog. We have it perched right next to our fence. Most times it works -- but when the dogs are especially agitated nothing helps. Hope my suggestions help.

I feel for some of you! We're OK right now but we did live right next door to people who had a Doberman who decided he hated us. We were living in a beach home on stilts at that time and we had a chain link fence. That dog would roar at us continuously and even throw his body against the fence. The owner kept telling us to just ignore him! Oh yeah, right.

There's a kennel in this area that advertises no-bark collars for lease. I have no idea what that is!
