Bare Minerals vs Major Brands Mineral Makeup

I got the Personal Custom Kit with the Pick Me Up pink concealer, Theme Park blush, Nick Nack blush, foundation, Copper lip color and finishing dust. I am hooked.

I have the Nick Nack blush too and I really like it. The one I don't like is Apple. It's terrible on me.

The blush that I didn't like was B&B. It's a little orangy on me and too dark. I just totally picked the wrong color. I'm going to order chit chat.

I hate B&B - order Snooze Bar. Its a better looking, not so obnoxious B&B.

B&B mixes up well with the foundation though - in the summer....for a little gloweyness.

I should add that I also love the Weekend Getaway blush. It's very natural. I just ran out of it in my sample size so I will have to get a full-size.

One question--has anyone who is a long-time EM user noticed differences in color when they order successive jars of blush?

For instance, when I got my sample of Nick Nack I loved it so much, I ordered the full size. It had quite a "lavendar" undertone too which was different. The full size Nick Nack that I got, though, doesn't seem quite as intense as the sample and I don't like it as much. I wonder if they vary from lot to lot?

So I think I found the right foundation shade(medium beige). Only problem is it kinda accentuates my pores, makes them look huge. I ordered it in semi-matte. Should I change it to a different forumla? If so, which one?

How did you guys get the codes for discounts/free samples?

Also, can anyone recommend a good daily moisturizer? I have dry, very sensitive skin. The last moisturizer I tried caused me to break out in hives. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, suggestions please!

I'd love to try some of this, but with so many colors and finishes I have no idea what to start with.

I have a fair complexion with reddish "splochy-ness" I use makeup to get rid of. I am 45 and don't want sparkle or shine, or cakey either.

Anyone have any color and finish advice?

Can't help with moisturizer for sensitive skin, but I have good luck making my pores look smaller by using Intensive formula foundations, buffing well, and using Silk Dust as a finishing powder.

There is no code for the free samples- on the site, go to the "custom kits" tab- there is a "Free sample" kit you can click on and it is free (just costs you shipping). You get 3 foundation shades, one blush, and one concealer.

For specails, click on the big "Specials" box on the left of the home screen. They change every couple of weeks.

What kind of skin do you have- oily, normal, or dry? Do you like heavier coverage, or lighter?

I have oily skin and like med/heavy coverage, and I use Intensive formula. The Origional Glo is a lighter coverage formula, and gives some "glowiness" to your face. Semi matte is good for normal skin, and it gives medium coverage. Matte and Intensive give the most coverage and are good at absorbing oiliness.

I have light to med skin with a lot of ruddiness, and I like Fair Medium or Cool Medium. For your skin color, some good colors to try might be Cool Fair, Cool Fair Medium, Cool Multitasking Neutral, Buff Fair Neutral, or Buff Fairly Light Neutral.

Weekend Getaway , EMail Me, and Apple are all good "no sparkle" blushes. The first two are pretty neutral, peachy shades, and Apple is a natural pink. I also love Waffle Cone- it is a pretty light earthy brown/pink. It does have some shimmer, but I can wear it at 41 and don't feel it is too shiny.

Have fun experimenting!!

Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. I have already ordered and received a free sample kit. What I was referring to about codes was, in an earlier post someone mentioned using a code to get a 7% discount and brushes and sample size of blush included with their order over $30. Here is part of the post

Enter discount code DGZJxn in your cart to get 7% off your order before (extended through) January 23th. And all orders over $30 (after discount and minus shipping) receive Premium Soochco Kabuki Brush, Brow Brush (while supplies last), as well as an exclusive blush color in sample size New Car Smell a romantic and beautiful fun peachy beige shade, perfect for winter!

Where did everybody find these type of codes/discounts? I am ready to place an order, but would love to get the discount as well. TIA.

Oops- sorry! I should have figured you knew how to get the free samples, since you already have them- duh me!

For the current specials, there is a big blue box on the left side of the home page of the website. Just click on it, and whatever the special is, it will tell you the code to enter. Unfortunately, as of this morning, the special mentioned previously is gone- and there isn't a new one posted yet. If you wait a day or so, there will probably be another one up- Karina, the owner, is good about giving away small sizes of new and limited-edition shadows and blushes. Also, giving % off deals and brushes (I have gotten 4 or 5 free eye shadow and other brushes off of specials in the past year). I am waiting to see what the new special is, too!

ETA: I see a post right above this one that might help. My apologies. LOL!!!

I've skimmed over the posts and I haven't seen this mentioned so I apologize if it has been addressed already.

I would love to try a mineral makeup. It just seems as though my usual makeup has recently not be well suited for my skin. My face is beginning to show major signs of stress and age (oh and lack of sleep).

However, I'm not sure if a mineral makeup would be right for me. My skin is combination - oily AND has dry patches (it's indecisive just like my brain). I have flaky spots that I battle and I'm concerned that the mineral makeups would magnify those places?

Also, I need something that has staying power. Due to the oil, most makeups want to just disappear or slide right off my face.

Any advice as to whether or not a mineral makeup would be right for me? I'm going to order the Everyday Minerals sample to try, but wanted to opinions too.

Thanks!

I have used many different makeups (Lancome, Clinique, L'Oreal, etc). Like you, after about 4-5 hours, I feel like I don't have any on.

I have used ALL the brands of mineral makeup (BE, EM, Sheer Cover) and it has been my experience that they still look great when I get home from work. Of course, not as good as when I first put it on but I still feel like I have my "face" on when I get home. And if I need to go somewhere later, it is REALLY easy to freshen it up. I usually can just add a bit more blush (that's what seems to disappear). Sometimes, I might put a touch of mineral veil on in certain places.

As for the combo skin, I don't know what to tell you. I am one with EXTREMELY dry skin; however, I do tend to get a little bit oily at the end of the day around my nose. My nose would still flake; however, if I did not moisturize it.

The only moisturizer that works for me (and I've tried ALL the ones out there that I can afford and about 50% of the ones I can't afford!) still leave me flaking. So, I use straight Vaseline on my face, two times a day. No the most sophisticated thing in the world. But no more flakes. Do you think you could use that on your flakey areas? It works.

I think like any makeup, even mineral makeup is going to settle in the flakes. There's just no hiding that except to get rid of it. I don't think, though, that it will give you a worse appearance than the liquid foundation would.

Very helpful! Thanks so much. :)

so what is everyones favorite thing from EM? I'm going to order another sample kit today, I want to try more colors before ordering the big kit.

After trying it on bare skin, I feel like my pores look bigger on my nose:eek: Anyone else with larger pores have any suggestions?

I had the same problem, but on my cheeks(under my eyes). I think I found the right shade of foundation(medium beige). But, I think I got the wrong formula(semi-matte). My question now is what formula do I get...matte, intensive or original glo? Hopefully one of those will minimize my pores.

Can anyone tell me what mineral veil is/what it is supposed to do? I keep hearing how great this stuff is, but don't really know what it is. Is it just to set the makeup or what?

Ok, here's my story. I recently went back to work (Dec. '07) after being a SAHM for over 12 years. So I wanted some decent make-up. I had ordered the EM free sample kit last March after seeing it on another thread here. I am blonde, very light blue eyes, very fair pinkish skin. I usually get the fairest foundation and EM's cool fair was too light. I liked the cool multi-tasking, but my 2 year old dumped it out after barely trying it! :headache: Anyway, I reordered a few weeks ago and am using the multi-tasking foundation. My concealer is wrong, I'm not sure what to get. I got intensive fair concealer and it's completely wrong for me. I also got cool fair medium foundation, but it's too dark. So I think I need to get some more cool fair light and mix the two, which I'm nervous about doing! I got the tinted silk dust finishing powder and I like it alot. For blush I got All Smiles, Sunday Brunch and Back to School and that is my go to color. Back to School does have sparkles but I don't notice them on my face after applying it. Sunday Brunch is VERY dark, so a tiny bit goes along way. I got lots of eye colors and my go to color there is Hot Cocoa. Anyone have any suggestions on the concealer for me? I don't have dark circles, just blemishes and some red areas.

Don't know about Mineral Veil - but I do have the Intensive formula, but still have the problem with it not adequately covering the pores on my nose

How do you all use your concealer? Do you thickly apply it to your uneven color or problem areas and then follow it with the foundation and then the finishing powder? It seems hard to be exact with a powder concealer and brush to me.

Thanks for all the insight! :teacher:

Good to know. I had ordered a sample kit from another company(southern magnolia minerals) and that kit came with something called perfection powder. It is a really fine, sheer powder that has helped to minimize my pores and set my makeup without looking chalky. I'm hoping to find an equivalent at EM so I can order everything from one place. Although, SM does offer free shipping.

When I first got the sample kits, I didn't have the proper brushes. So, I tried using the concealer with a q-tip. That did not work. It was picking up too much of the powder and looked too thick and cakey. So, I went out and bought a concealer brush and that has made a huge difference. You swirl and tap the concealer onto the brush(just like you do for your foundation). Then you just kinda dab and buff it onto your problem areas. You really are just using the same technique you use on your face/foundation, just in a smaller, more concentrated area. That is why you need the smaller brush. It really is amazing to see the blemishes just kinda disappear before your eyes.

There is a forum on Everyday Minerals. I have gotten a bunch of great tips and tricks on how best to apply the makeup. Another trick is to put a little of your daily moisturizer on your hand and shake on a little of the concealer powder. Then, after mixing with your finger, you can apply to your problem areas. That may give you better coverage.

Let me know if that works for you.

I also would love to try this and would love feedback on which colors to get. I have fair/both red and yellow undertones (due to rosecea) and very dry skin. Any ideas?
Also wondering if you all use a finishing powder for the mmu?
