I have been reading about things to do with your kids (especially their first time at Disney) and saw something about getting a haircut at the Barbershop in MK. I read that it is $14 (plus tip) and if it is your child's first haircut they will give them a set of Mickey ears also. Is this true? Are they real ears, or like paper cut outs?

Anyone done this before? When and how did it work out?

Also, I saw something about paying $5 for a color streak and then they will also put "pixie dust" (confetti) and hairspray in older children's hair. I have a 3 y/o DD who would be there also. She may like this?!

How busy is this place? Do I have to plan to get there early? or can I just stop by anytime?

Thanks in advance!

We did this last year and my husband swears it is the best bargain at disney :). My little guy was 18 months and it was his first haircut. We got a set of real mouse ears with "first haircut" embroidered on the back. She also gave us a little certificate and the wrapped up a lock of his hair with some "pixie dust". I have tons of pictures and the barber also gave him stickers and a buzz lightyear to play with in the chair so he would sit still.

They don't take appointments, only walk ins and we had to wait about 30 min, but it was well worth it. They even sprinkled some pixie dust on the head of my patient 4 y.o. DD.

I highly recommend this.

The barbershop is so much fun! I wanted to do it with my middle daughter who was 18 months at the time. But I chickened out and just couldn't cut those cute curls! So my husband went instead. :) He got a haircut and pixie dust on top. It was so cool. We'll definitely do it again. Be sure to get there early as a line forms rather quickly.

I am trying to decide whether to do this for my son on our trip next week or wait until we are there in November when he turns 2

We did this last year with our DD who was almost 3. It was a great hair cut and the Cast Members were the best.
We did not do the color streaking because you can't get it wet but they did put in the pixie dust (confetti) and Michael (who cut her hair) was ever so kind to call and find out where Mary Poppins was going to be and made sure we were brought to her.
My best advice as for what time to go- we went right at rope drop. they open at 9 and we were 2nd in line.
we are planning on doing it again this year. Hey for $14 for a child (before tip) it is one of the best bargins to be found at Disney.

Oh my you have to do this! My DS was 13 months when we got his first haircut on Main Street last December and it was awesome:) The barber was great and the pictures we took were priceless:)

Get there ASAP after rope drop. It is a small place (only two chairs I think) and we had to wait in a line... It was worth it though to be able to show him where he got his first haircut on each visit. He actually could use another cut so we might be going back in May.

It was 14 dollars plus a tip and you got a certificate, first haircut Ears, and a lock of hair:)

Oh yeah... They get real classic black mickey ears with first hsircut embroidered on the back in white:) A nice keepsake:)

We did this on our first trip with ds when he was 13mos. It was too cute. We got lots of great pictures. He was given a first haircut certificate, a Mickey Ears hat embroidered with "First Haircut" and clipping of his hair wrapped in tissue with Mickey confetti. The hair dress kept him distracted with Mickey stickers and a Mickey spinner toy. :) Definitely worth it. My advice: If you do this, try to get to the park early, and get in line asap. The line for this does form pretty quickly, and they do not take reservations.

hth!

I agree it is a must do. The pictures are priceless. We did it when my daughter was 11 months old. We went back this past October when she was a little over 2 and had her hair trimmed and pixie dust put in. She loved it and thought she was very special. Just a warning though - we are still finding traces of pixie dust when we comb through her hair!

Thanks for all your replies everyone! I really appreciate it!

Our only issue is that we only have one day in MK, so I am trying to have as little amount of "waste" time as possible. I don't think DH will be thrilled about it being our first stop of the day either.

Maybe I will just chance it and check out the line throughout the day. :confused3

I have been debating doing this for DS15mths. This would be his first haircut but I am afraid he might start screaming.

But it does sound so cute!:cloud9:

Okay...don't laugh!!! So my ds will turn 4 while at Disney and we are thinking about doing the Barbershop as well for his 1st haircut. While I have cut his hair at home, he has never been anywhere or had anyone else but mom trim his curls. What do you think? Will the CMs laugh at me hysterically when I say it's his first real haircut? or should I not even mention it?

I'm not even sure how he'll respond to anyone else going near his head of curls...

My ds had his first haircut herre in November, he didn't like it but it was a nice haircut. All of my boys got their haircut there that day, My middle ds also had his spiked and painted. A great deal for $14. Here are some pics.

I may wait til November My DS doesn't have that much hair at 16 months but he has an annoying tail that annoys me.

Going to talk to DH tonite

I sooooo wanted to do this with my DS when he turned 2 at WDW, but we ran out of time! So instead, I thought I'd be smart and try at DLR (I don't know WHY I thought DisneyLand had a barber shop)- the guy on Main Street looked at me like I was crazy! So instead, we ended up getting DS's hair cut locally- blah, how boring!

Definitely do it! It seems like soo much fun and a good memory :D

We took DD7 there for her first haircut on our first family Disney trip and it was great. She got a trim and a ponytail with pixie dust, and her special "first haircut" ears. DS also got a trim and spikes done with colored gel. That also started our "growth chart" tradition of taking a picture of the kids next to the barber pole on each trip.

We're already planning on taking DD8mo to WDW for her first haircut, though I'm sure that will be several years and many trips down the road!

We took our 18 month old for his first haircut and it was great. He wasn't happy, but the CMs play games, sing songs, pass out stickers and generally try to help the kids relax. We have made it a tradition to get the boys hair cut. In fact, they have received some of their best cuts there! We joke that we will have to go back to Disney to get decent haircuts!!

The shop opens at 9 and we suggest that you get there at opening. They told us once in there that if the parks are busy, they are slow...if the parks are slow, they are busy.
