Barbara Walters Says Paula Deen Makes Kids Fat

I use this recipe for marshmallows
http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/06/springy-fluffy-marshmallows/
but if the raw eggs make you nervous there is also this one, which is also yummy!

They are actually really easy, and if you cut them out with cookie cutters and coat them with sanding sugar you can make your own custom peeps! I have also cut them into large squares and given them with a home made hot chocolate mix for easy cheap neighbor gifts!
Oh and they are awesome dipped in chocolate candy coating!
Home made marshmallows = good times!!

Thanks mb!! Can't wait to try these! :)

Darnit monkeybug, yer gonna make me and my kid fat! ;)

Thank you for pointing out the recipes; I never in a jillion years thought of making your own marshmallows! I think DD and I will have to try this

Oh No! How irresponsible of me! I should re post a healthy version.
I have a friend who makes cookies out of garbanzo beans (yup...they taste about as good as they sound. It's not hard to keep your kids from over eating sweets if you just make sweets they won't eat I guess.) I'll ask if she has a marshmallow recipe! :)

They were making me hungry just watching them. :goodvibes No kids, but I might just have to buy that cookbook. :rotfl2:

I haven't read thru this.

There is a doctor who comes on a show on fox every sunday morning. He once said that we are not eating the same food we did 50 or more years ago. Just about everything today is processed and foods are grown differently today.

One thing you will notice is just about every processed food has sucrose corn syrup in it. That type of sweetener goes directly to the liver and is turned into fat. I look for foods that has natural sugar in it and it is hard to find. Even bread has corn syrup in it.

If someone wants to make the recipes more healthy, all they have to do is make the appropriate changes. Common sense will tell you what to change.

Exactly.

for instance, a favorite at parties is her "is it really better than sex" cake. But her "recipe", in a strange cross-over to the Semi-Homemade show, involves a box cake and box pudding. BLEAH!

Since we *have to* avoid HFCS (box cake), I just make my own yellow cake and my own pudding, from my Betty Crocker cookbook. I tend to use lower fat milk in the pudding. Just by making those parts of the cake from scratch, it's more healthy for us, b/c it's not boxed junk with strange ingredients. Tastes better too, especially with the organic whipped cream made in my mixer. mmmm.

But just b/c I have the recipe doesn't mean I make it all the time!

The number of foods dropping the HFCS is growing. Even Miracle Whip just did this quietly. Last year I checked the ingredients...HFCS. Drat. The other week I was walking by the MW display, decided to check...no HFCS. I figure they did it without fanfare b/c the general company is still using it in other things, and doesn't want to basically say "we don't think this ingredient is OK so we're dumping it from this product" when they're still using it. (there's actually an old thread somewhere here on the Dis with those of us who don't use it in our diets anymore...search "high fructose" and that might get you there)

There was a Good Eats episode where Alton Brown made homemade marshmallows. I'll see if I can't google it up.

EDIT:

That was easier than I thought.

Good Eats marshmallow recipe

Cool. :)

Paula Deen has a following. She isn't hiding anything about her cooking. Everyone I know likes to indulge now and then. Even kids. I don't see that changing.

I like Paula Deen. I like her cooking. I like her personality. She's feisty and fun. Barbara Walters, not so much.

I don't think Barbara Walters is raising any kids right now, so I'm not sure where she's getting her info.

I have to say that even though I realize obesity in children is an epidemic right now, the ways being used to attempt to fight it frustrate me. Kids aren't allowed to have candy at school anymore. The Cookie Monster is eating veggies. WDW is using whole wheat (horrible, I might add) buns for everything. Ugh! Is any of this stuff actually helping anybody?

Like a PP said, it's over-processed foods and a lack of exercise causing the problem. I seriously doubt that anyone buying and using a cookbook--Paula Deen's or otherwise--is feeding their family tons of processed foods. IOW, cookbooks equal home cooking, and that is not what it causing the obesity epidemic IMO.

I thought kids would be the ONLY people able to handle Paula's cooking without health concerns. Of course, we handle the obesity epidemic in this house by um....playing outside, taking karate lessons, joining the soccer team, turning off the TV after it's been on too long. ;)

I think we're missing a reason for barbara's attitude toward Paula Deen. Paula is trying to put together a cable show that resmebles The View that she will host and have several co-hosts. I'm betting Barbara is not happy with this because Paula Deen is much more fun and happier to be around than Barbara is. PD may not be someone's favorite but one would have have to admit that barbara seems to have the personality of a dish rag.

As Paula told Oprah, "I'm a cook, not your doctor!!"

I think you hit the nail on the head. Barbara is probably sour on Paula D. getting a show. Makes a lot of sense.

I read a blurb where Kate Gosslen (sp) will be co-hosting some? But I think PD could carry a show on her own with flying colors. I read an autobiography on PD not too long ago. She didn't hold anything back. Down to earth and tells it like it is.

I used to tape her cooking show. (I don't know why I stopped. Probably not enough space.) One of my favorite episodes was her cooking with a young woman. The woman was talking about her college plans and she asked PD if she had been to college. PD didn't miss a beat. She said, "Oh, I drove by one, honey.", (something like that) in that southern drawl of hers. It was hilarious!

I cannot stand THE VIEW or Barbara Walters...I used to love it when Gilda on Saturday Night Live would do her skit on Rosanne Rosanne a Dana...It was a takeoff on Barbara and ALWAYS cracked me UP!:lmao:

If thats true about Paula's show you are probably right. I wonder what age Barabara will be when she actually grows up?

I love Paula's attitude and her cooking. Hey if I'm going to get fat then I'm going to enjoy it

Barbara should have left television a LONG time ago. She's tired and she's mean.

People feeding kids snacks all day, every day risk their kids being fat. Especially if they don't exercise.

The voice of Barbara Walters is a leading cause of migraine headaches in the United States. She should stop talking to give relief to us all.

Agreed that the ultimate responsibility does fall on the parents. But when the book is marketed as a children's cookbook, and the title of the book implies that it is suitable for daily meals (Lunchbox), then I can see it being misleading. I can also see parents thinking they are doing something right for their child by cooking homemade meals instead of fast food and cafeteria lunches.

My 2 children are underweight. My 11 year old had to go into the peds every 3 months for a weight check because he was in the 5%, and my 2nd grader is in the 10% at 42 pounds. I am not a parent that would be worried about making my children fat to serve them these types of foods daily. But you also have to consider that these foods are high in cholesterol, which even effects skinny kids.

I have two lightweights, too. DS9 is around 50 and DS11 is under 60. Maybe if we lived in Scotland, someone would be coming to take our kids away from us, too!

This reminds me of a great scene in Princess Daisy, by Judith Krantz....an ad man is telling his fiance about commercials he WISHES he could make, and one involved Howard Coscell (sp?) and Bayer asperin. Women saying "I hate Howard Coscell!" over and over - and the fiance says how about Howard doing the voice over? "Bayer - it won't make me go away, but YOU"LL feel better..."

Yep. Babs needs to retire.
