Baltimore BOT-Fest

Hello Bots! Sorry I haven't been posting much. I haven't actually been running much either. I hurt my knee, and I'm not exactly sure how I hurt it or what is going on.

About 2 weeks ago I was running and my right knee started to feel tight to the outside and below the kneecap. It felt like it wasn't happy bending very much, so I cut a run short and headed home. I iced it and it felt ok. I ran on the treadmill the next day and it was tight at first, then it loosened up and felt fine. The next day I ran 10 miles in the snow and it felt really good after the first mile or so. Later that day, though, it hurt really bad and I could hardly walk.

Since then, I haven't been able to run at all and if I don't move my knee much for an extended period of time, it gets all tight and hurts pretty bad. Walking is mostly ok, but sometimes even that hurts. The worst thing seems to be driving. After driving for a long time my knee is really stiff.

Anyway, I think I actually need to see a doctor about this one. The tobacco road marathon is in 1 month, but I don't see how I can run that since I haven't trained much and I can barely walk. I tried using the elliptical this weekend, but I only lasted 2 minutes before I stopped. Hmmm.

Any thoughts as to what is going on with my stupid knee? It isn't a sharp pain, it is mostly a dull tightness. Like something is under my kneecap or like the ligaments are messed up.

Matt, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, or anywhere else for that matter, I do however, have a really good looking orthopedic surgeon....but I digress.... :rolleyes1

It sort of sounds like you tore your meniscus. I have done that on both sides. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesn't, right? I had a "bucket handle" tear and the "handle" part would flip over and get caught between the bones. Then it would hurt like heck, but when it flipped back it was fine. Sometimes my knee would give out too.

Anyway, the good news is, if that is what the problem is, it's usually a pretty easy fix. Well, "easy" being arthoscopic surgery, as opposed to cutting your knee open.

Keep us posted.

Hello To all the wonderful inhabitants of BOTville!!!

Matt~ Sorry to hear about your knee. Some of your symptoms sound like what I have been experiencing with my right knee. However, my issue was pain on the inside just below the kneecap. It is nothing major luckily and I hope yours is too. Please see a Doctor about it soon. He'll most likely do Xrays in his office, see nothing and order an MRI. Please keep us posted.

I went to the YMCA again tonight and managed the following:

• Elliptical = 3.1 miles in 21:48 (7:01 Pace)
• Expresso Bike = 3.37 miles in 11:29 (3:24 Pace)
• Free weight workout

I feel like I am flying on the elliptical and the bike, pushing it from start to finish. I hope it is helping with the musscle tone and will contribute to calories burned and ultimately, weight loss.

Sara~ You are still in our thoughts and prayers. Please post an update when you are able.:hug:

Hi to everyone else!!!

:grouphug:

Howard

Matt: Sorry to hear about your knee (how is Cindy's knee BTW?). I happen to be a doctor but knee pain isn't really my thing. My own husband went to a "real" doc for knee advice. It's so tough to tell based on symptoms alone-- you can tell more by exam (and lots more by MRI). Hopefully it is nothing major and you can get back out there soon.

Well, I thought it might be cruel to post I've been walk/running with my dogs on DRY roads in upstate NY and I don't want to jinx myself so I've stayed away:laughing: I'm still sporting the trach and waiting to see about my radiation. No work until at least 3/15:rolleyes1

Matt - :wizard::wizard:Terribly sorry about the knee and I'm loving the FB pics of your culinary delights! I hate to agree with Judy:rotfl2: but having had a meniscus tear repair in the not too distant past, I'm glad you're thinking a doc may be a good idea at this time:thumbsup2 Granted, my d-bag ortho made me wait 7 MONTHS until he ordered an MRI to diagnose my tear:headache: so he's no longer my ortho but I'm sure you'll have better luck!

Judy - How's that cabin fever:hippie:?

Howard - Thanks for posting your workouts to keep me inspired:hug: Please give Cam my love:cloud9:

Mike - Sorry to hear about your little dilemma;) Hoping the TM running isn't too brutal or you resign yourself to it not being pretty but still getting the job done:yay: Holy carp about the 50 miles:scared1:

Jen - Loved the race pics on FB:love: and congrats to both you and Butch on the PR's:cool1:

Lou
- Are you making reference to Bruce's pic with the bulging thighs that Jodi posted previously?! Thanks so much for the reminder:rotfl2:. Sorry about your snowfall headaches:sad2:

Jodi - Personally, I agree, it's totally a guy thing:lmao: but in the same vain, I have no doubt Bruce can accomplish his mission:thumbsup2 Just get him a somewhat sensible schedule put together and pray for the best:laughing:

Colleen - Hoping Ryan's fully recovered and you're all doing well!

Dave - Are your girls out of school this weekpopcorn::?

I'm trying to keep busy while maintaining a balance of doing too much:rolleyes1. My kids are off for the week so they're keeping me busy, if only to referee their disagreements:confused3. I'm getting outside daily with my dogs and doing yoga and the bosu trainer.

Hey Bots

Howard - Nice workouts @ the gym...what's up with the java-bike? Support, Bruce....got it.:sad2:

Jen - How goes it in the land of kitties & puppies?

ChickenBud - I have NO idea what's wrong with your knee; but like, is this going to effect our chicken-dance next year @ Biergarten? Seriously, though, that sucks. You need to get it checked out. I'm thinking that you tweaked something while running in that snow...weird gait & stuff. Let us know what happens. popcorn::. How's your other half?

Sara - What's doin? Stop by here soon, eh?

Ju-Diferous - What gives?

Mikael - Training strategies for the 50 miler?popcorn:: Let me in on it, 'cause Bruce needs all the help he can get.

Hey to all you other non-posting freakazoids! I been running on sloshy roads...nothing great. Still planning to do that hilly 1/2 on the 27th.:rolleyes1

Jodi: Back when I was considering running a 50 miler I did some research on training plans. The only thing I found was this plan from Hal Higdon.

http://www.halhigdon.com/ultramarathon/ultramarathon2000.htm

I think that for running super long distances the key in training is to do back to back long runs/walks on the weekend. For the actual race I think most people do a run/walk from the beginning.

This is in stark contrast to my standard marathon plan of run until I can't run anymore and if I'm not already at the finish, then start walking.

I have a stress fracture at the top of my fourth metatarsal of my left foot. Pardon me while I wallow in self-pity for a while. :sad2:

Sara - SO glad you are getting out and about! I say you are very deserving of good weather! :goodvibes

Judy:hug: I feel your pain. I fratured my metacarple where it meets the capitate, during the WDW full.

I should be resting it, but with Boston comming up fast I can't.
I hope you don't have any races comming up.

I hope it's all right for me to post here, it's just with your MCM title you have caught my interest as I love that race.

Judy dear, my stress fracture last March was the third metatarsal on my left foot. I know what a pain that can be. Are you going to have to wear an air-cast? That would suck.:sad2: Keep your weight off it, I recommend that you spend some time in a swing suspended above the floor with no weight on your feet, especially the fractured one. :rolleyes1

I made it to the YMCA again tonight:

• Elliptical = 3.1 miles in 23:26 (7:33 pace)
• Expresso Bike = 4.01 miles in 14:43 (3:40 pace)
• Free weight workout

Sara~ Thanks for checking in!!! Glad to see you are outside and keeping up with your family.:hug::hug:

Jodilicious~ The Expresso Bike is a upright bike with a video monitor on it. You can check it out at www.expresso.net. There are several courses you can "ride" some flat, some with rolling hills, etc. As you go up or down a hill in the program, the resistance gets tougher or easier. You can sign up online and log in on the bike and it keeps track of your rides. From one ride to the next, you can see a ghost rider of you the last time and try to beat your previous ride. It's pretty cool. I push it hard on the bike.

I need to hit the hay early tonight. I'm tuckered out. Have a great Thursday!

Who me? A thread killer? :confused3

Hi everyone, I hope you had a great Thursday. :thumbsup2

I made it to the YMCA again tonight:

• Elliptical = 3.1 miles in 20:26 (6:35 pace My personal best)
• Expresso Bike = 2.91 miles in 10:41 (3:40 pace) (same pace as last night)
• Free weight workout

I was "officially" allowed to run today. It's been 4 weeks since I've received the results of my MRI. My doctor told me to take 4 to 5 weeks off from running. I see him next week to follow up. I think I'll wait until I see him to run. When I do it'll be outside. I guess I need some of this snow to melt off first. I haven't taken an anti-inflammatory for a couple of weeks and I am almost 99% pain and discomfort free with the knee. I hope that continues.

Matt~ How about an update on your knee and Cindy?

I hope everyone is as happy as I am that tomorrow is FRIDAY!!! Its been a long week.

Howard - Good news on being cleared to run Well, at least being closed to being cleared. I don't think you would have been doing much running over the past 4-5 weeks anyway. I think have 2 feet of snow outside my house and the roads are still too dangerous to run on. We may serious need some x-country skis for Caesar Rodney. I remember running that course 2 years ago with snow/ice still on the ground from a recent storm. It was down right dangerous.

Well... I guess I am bucking (recent) convention by posting something. Don't hold it against me.

I ran yesterday for the first time since the Disney Marathon on Jan. 11. I generally tested out the knee and my level of physical conditioning. It went pretty well despite sucking wind a bit. Running and doing the bike and elliptical are two different things. I was very aware of every ache or indication of pain in my knee as I ran. It wasn't painful at all, however I was worried about it. To say I didn't feel anything would be a lie, however it was very minor.

Miles: 3.1
Time: 30:36
Pace: 9:53

I didn't push it, although looking down at my Garmin I was running in some instances around 8:00-8:15 pace. The knee feels it but not bad at all one day after. I've got some considerable work to do to get ready for the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon in March.

So... back to the :rolleyes1popcorn:::yo-yo:

Ha ha!!!!!!

Recovering from a long swim meet in Cary, NC. DD10 qualified for 4 events in the state championships. Her best result was an 11th place finish. She had fun but it makes back-to-work Monday a bear for me.

Not much to report on the work out scene, biking a little, walking a little, yoga. That's all folks. I have never had to urge to train for a spring marathon and this year is the same.

When I walked DS to the bus this morning at 6:30, birds were singing!! Ah spring is in the air!

Hi everyone, I hope you had a great day. It was Monday, so I'll take it as par for the course. I've had better days.

However, I made it to the YMCA tonight:

• Elliptical = 3.1 miles in 25:00 (8:03 pace)
• Expresso Bike = 3.37 miles in 11:47 (3:29 pace)
• Free weight workout

Looking forward to resting tonight. I need some deep sleep and recouperative rest.

Wishing you a great evening. Please post some updates to keep me and Colleen company.

Good Morning Bots.

Howard: Good job on the continued gym visits. Glad you were able to get out for a run. It’s good that the knee cooperated a bit.

Colleen: DS gets the bus at 6:30? Yikes. My DS missed his 8:25 bus yesterday, we’d never make 6:30. Glad you are feeling spring in the air. We have a week of snow/sleet/rain predicted. Congrats to your DD. Very impressive. Eleventh in a state as big as NC is incredible.

Lou: Bummer about your roads being too dangerous to run on. At least when we get snow I can usually get out the next day for a run. Good luck with your training.

Judy: Very sorry to hear about your fracture. I hope it recovers quickly.

Jodi: Good luck with your race on Saturday. My DS and I looked up the Disney Cruise and for the 5 of us for 4 days it would cost $3.5K, that’s not counting the airfare. My DH just gave me the look. When I hit the lottery I’ll be back to book that. How’s Bruce’s training going?

Matt: Really sorry to hear about your knee problems. Have you been to the doctor yet?

Cindy: I hope your knee is better. Are you still wearing the strap?

Sara: Glad things are getting back to “normal”. Continued best WISHes to you. It’s great that you are able to keep busy, and doubly great that you don’t have to go to work for a while.

Mike: Hope the training for the 50 miler is going well.

Jen: Congrats to you and Butch on your PR last weekend. Hope Butch’s knee didn’t suffer too much from trying to beat your friend.

Hello to everyone else.

I had my endoscopy yesterday. It went well in that I don’t remember a thing. The Dr. found some minor irritation, but not enough to explain all the pain I’ve been having. Her latest thought is that maybe it’s a food allergy. I have to keep a food journal to see if there are certain things that trigger it. The good thing is that it’s not keeping me from doing any of my runs. My runs are just a bit slower from the extra weight I’ve accumulated.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy
