Balcony. I don't like ground floor rooms. I don't like hearing noise above me in a hotel or condo. Always prefer a top floor room, and a balcony if there is a nice of water or mountains.
I lived in two different apartments and both were on the upper levels with balconies. I INSISTED on a balcony to fantasize I was Evita giving speeches to my adoring subjects.
Balcony. And the higher the better. If there were only patio condos available, I detest the ground floor so much that I would be moving on to the next complex.

I'd pick patio because in some condos they do not allow you to have gas grills out on the balcony and I love to grill! I'm also not a huge fan of heights.
Balcony. Preferably top floor - funny you should ask, I'll be buying in the spring. In my apt renting years, the only disadvantages to a balcony is that the people on the lower balcony may use their balcony as their smoking area. (One was cigar!). I'm not afraid of street level (I live street level now) but I like being above and looking out over a height. I don't care if it's cityscape, I just like a view other than another door.
