Schools ask parents to take child in for an evaluation. For possible ADHD. Which really means the teacher thinks your child would benefit from drug therapy if we are be honest today.

We're not talking about drugs that put a child in a stupor sovthat he sits still, says nothing and does nothing. We are talking about nedications that allow a child to concentrate on the task at hand instead of engaging in behavior that is disruptive to the learning process.

I Googled like you asked and the links I found list drugs like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. Those are not drugs given to kids with just ADHD.

Some times the teacher is right, and sometimes the teacher is wrong. In the OPs case, I think the teacher was in the right. If all projects are displayed, would the OP had a problem with her child's project NOT being displayed? Probably.

I would have addressed the bad grade with my kid first, then the teacher. Only then I would have sat down with the principal if I truly felt my child was being singled out, or that the teacher had a problem. OP will now have the reputation as "THAT PARENT", and that can reflect onto her child.

I Googled like you asked and the links I found list drugs like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. Those are not drugs given to kids with just ADHD.

I don't have one link for it it's a long list middle daughter is in second year of college and just started phy classes. Anyways being nerd that she is she started looking in to school shooting and mental illness with drugs. The information she was showing me was eye opening.

Did you know that around 6.4 million children are "reported" to be ADHD with around 2/3 of those on meds that's around 10 percent of kids in school system.

So what that tells me is 10 percent of population of children ages 5 to 17 have ADHD and that number has got to be bigger with kids not getting reported.

That is shocking and alarming.

Yes. Sometime a school will suggest that a child be tested. But they can not diagnose or dispense drugs.

I remember watching a Frontline about ADHD drugs. IIRC at least one of the families was told your child takes the drugs or she will not be able to be in a normal classroom. While they didn't mandate she take them most families would give in and take them to keep their child in a regular classroom.

Did I say ignore it, behavioral therapy works wonders. I really believe we should be required to go that direction before drugs that may or may not work, that have long term effects on the liver.

That depends on the child, some kids would tell you it does exactly that. Some kids want to achieve so they will gladly take it, other kids just want to be themselves yet they have no say in the matter. To me it seems that pumping young developing brains full of chemicals is a recipe for disaster. I believe I had ADHD as a child, it went untreated and I did terrible in school. I have been a good employee and successful enough to satisfy myself. My brain has now naturally matured and most of my ADHD tendencies are gone, whereas several friends that were on drugs as kids cannot function without drugs as adults. One friend who did great in high school(on drugs) went back to college at the same time I did is ready to quit while I have straight A's. The way I see it is if your children's success in high school and below is more important than the rest of their lives drug them up, mine will come along at the pace that is right for THEM.

DH is very successful - good career, MBA - and I beg him to medicate himself! He is so ADD (always has been - fortunately, he's also very bright, so did well in school). The truth is they often get what they want because it's easier to give in than continue to fight with them. Of course that only validates their belief that they are right and feeds their self righteousness.

Like I already said, I did that. It brings up articles about antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs. Yes there are some shooters that were taking drugs for ADHD in addition to drugs for depression or other mental illnesses.

I am in college, with three kids. DD5 is the oldest and the only one currently in school. It appears to me DD3 has some form of ADHD, I would never force her to take meds. If in high school she asks for them we may explore our options. You and I may look at success as two completely different things. Success to me is happiness not money, prestige, or accomplishments. One of my kids may be happy being a a doctor, another may be happy being a janitor. If being a janitor makes them happy I consider it success.

Edit- That is not to say I will let my 9 year old decide they just want to be a janitor and give up on school. If they decide when they are 16 that they are not interested in going to college that will be fine with me. Not all people have the same priorities, I would much rather my children not go to college and live a happy life than go after what I think is right and be miserable.

That's not feasible for many people. A child I know has ADHD and she's medicated while working with behavioral therapy. She didn't take her medicine one day and went to school. She made sounds all day, colored on her entire body with marker, took a 20 minute test in 4 1/2 minutes and failed, didn't complete any task fully given in school, etc. unmedicated this would happen every day. Until she was medicated she was 2 entire grades behind academically... After less than a year and some heavy tutoring she's about 6 months behind.

I don't know if it's national but in Ohio the public schools have '3rd grade guarantee,' which basically means if they don't test at the proper level they don't move on to 4th grade. If she developed at her own pace she'd easily not pass 3rd grade for several years.

I am not saying I disagree with all medication, I disagree with the over medicating that is taking place. My youngest brother needs his meds, my nephew gets them because he was not doing as well as my sister wanted him too. That is when I think it is wrong.
