bad diaper rash-please help

If you can't find some of these in stores, and would rather not make it yourself, you can always ask a Pharmacist to mix it up for you. They do this for patients.

Zinc oxide, nystatin ointment (not lotion), hydrocortisone creme, and eucerin creme (not lotion). You can get this made up by your pharmacist, or you may be able to buy the ingredients yourself, and mix it your self. Works really well. If the rash is caused by a yeast infection, which is possible, especially with antibiotic use, then apply the cream that is used for ******l yeast infections (like Monistat, etc...).

Butt Paste
One tube of Desitin
7 good squeezes of Stomahesive (you can get this at a pharmacy or the hospital)
5 droppers full of Tincture of Benzoin Compound (difficult to find but pharmacies can get it)
Mix VERY well and apply to bottom. Strongly recommended to use latex gloves or large Q-tips to apply directly to butt because it does not smell very good and you won't want it on your hands.
Mycolog Cream I used this on my daughter when she was a baby, and it works wonders. It has an anti-fungal in it, and also a corticosteroid. Because of the corticosteroid, you can't use this for a very long time, as it may cause side effects. Corticosteroids are good for reducing inflammation. It is very healing, and much easier to wash off than Desitin and other Zinc Oxide products. (

Dr. Smith's diaper creme is excellent. Ask your pharmacist because they usually keep it behind the counter.

THANK YOU!!! My son is having bad rash problems too and I had a sample of this stuff. When I saw it I thought I remembered that it was sold behind the counter, but no Rx needed. I posted this question on my parenting board and got no response. I guess I should know better that all the "brilliant" people are here. LOL! ;)

BTW, after one application the rash did look much better.

I agree it's probably a yeast infection.

I also agree with using a wash cloth insted of any baby wipes, and using a hair dryer to dry the tiny butt. Make sure it's not hot, but cool makes them wiggle.
Give plenty of fluids to dilute what goes in them too.

The antibiotics have messed up her gut. This happened to me sooooo bad when my Dr. put me on Zithromax for a sinus infection. Can she eat some plain yogurt? If so, that should help things. Would it be OK to use a lotramin cream on her rash? You should probably ask the Dr. first.

Have you tried Bacitracin? That was the only thing I ever used on Sam and it worked wonders. Hope she clears up soon.
(I havent read all the replies, so if this is a repeat, I apologize)

We went throught this for 2 years when my son was on antibiotics for horrible ear infections. The only thing that worked was Balmex really thickly applied and then corn starch based powder on top of that. It was like a little cast on his butt!:D . This will prevent the rash from happening, but if its already there a prescription antifungal should help clear it up and then start using the Balmex/cornstarch to prevent it from happening again.

This was this Grammie's suggestion.

When my kids got diaper rash, I washed their bottoms with my bare hands in the sink. I turned on the faucet in the sink and stuck their little bottom under the faucet while I washed them with my hand. I didn't use baby wipes or washcloth. Then I would pat them dry with a towel and leave the diaper off for a few minutes. Then I would apply ointment.

Another cream to try is Resinol. It will be behind the counter at the pharmacy. It is a drying agent, but the cream is very thick.

I use Viva paper towels and warm water instead of wipes with a rash.

My kids won't drink Pedelite either but will eat the frozen Pedelite pops.

Good Luck. Poor little thing!

If the rash is fiery red or yeasty looking, then do an anti-fungal (Lotrimin) and cover it with A&D Ointment.

This sounds too familar to me. My 19-month old had chronic ear infections prior to getting tubes. All of the antibiotics gave her nasty runny poos. Augmentin was the worst. Thirty minutes after the first dose her poor little digestive system was trashed. Her rashes get so bad they bleed.

Washing out the wipes with warm water is key for us. Also we rinse off her privates at least once a day when she is rashy. She has eczema so we can't bathe her too often.

I agree with the previous posters who suggest a yeast infection. With my DD, the yeast rashes seemed to be a little more red the regular ones. If her rash looks a little more red, I would put nystatin (prescription) on it. Just two or three days seemed to do the trick.

For just the plain old rash the doctor also prescribed something that the pharmacist has to mix up. They like 24 hours notice to make it. It is Aquaphor with Cholestyramine mixed it. Whatever the sandy Cholestyramine is, it seems to kill the acid in that antibiotic diarrhea.

I am also a big fan of lactinex. It helps with the diarrhea.

We are very big on making sure that we have elements of the BRAT diet whenever we are putting her on antibiotics.

B - Banana
R - Rice and Pasta
A - Apple sauce (NOT JUICE)
T - Toast

We avoid fruit like grapes when on antibiotics.

Good Luck!

Make sure that the yogurt you are using is a good one, such as Stoneybrook. The typical yogurts that you find in the dairy case do not have enough acidophilus bacteria to make a difference. Better yet, get some acidophilus tablets from the natural food section at the grocery store. Ask your doctor first, and how much to give her.

Good luck. It is no fun to have a sick kiddo, hope she feels better soon.

order it online. I spent lots of money trying everything else, this stuff works!

You guys are great!

I gave her a bath with ground up oatmeal last night. So far, only 3 diarrhea diapers today. The test results indicate that this is probably a virus. I will find out more tomorrow.

DD has been eating bananas, organic yogurt, toast, bland stuff.

Her diaper rash looks a bit better this today. It is smaller in area, but is bright red and stippled looking. I think I will continue the antifungal and definitely look into the lactinex.

Thank you all!

Another one for Triple Paste!! It works great. You should be able to get it at the pharmacy....it's behind the counter. Also, cornstarch helps dry it up!

My daughter had a couple of very bad diaper rashes and her pediatrician recommended applying Maalox with a cotton ball. This helps to neutralize acid before and after they are wet and has a cooling effect while drying. You can apply other creams over the Maalox after it dries. It worked amazingly well!
