Bad American

I bet you anything George Carlin had a hand in authoring this piece. I've been a fan of his since I was in middle school (scary, no? :rotfl2: ) and it sounds like something he would monologue about.

Except there are no dirty words. Carlin would use more profanity to prove his point.

Interesting...

I really love the

So lets see what you have to make a counter argument.

How could one make a counter-argument when the piece doesn't have any arguments? It simply states opinions. It doesn't explain any reasons for having them or debunk any reasons to have the opposite opinions. So wouldn't the appropriate "counter-argument" just be writing the same post over but saying "I don't believe x" everywhere it says "I do believe x"?

I have to say this........it is on the gun issue. I never thought at this stage of my life I would contemplate owning a gun, but lately I have been thinking about it. I grew up in Boston, live now in a resort area, but with everything that is going on in the world, I have been thinking about it. It is a scary thought for me. If I do make this decision, I will make sure I learn how to use it properly and safely....but scary that I am even contemplating it.

I guess I am a bad American too...

Bingo! We have a winner!

So I'm guessing that a  response is short for "what a rediculous bunch on silly nonsense".

I'm also guessing the OP's essay means that if you don't agree with the context, you're a good American. I think that's the point.

I own a gun... a Kahr K-9 to be precise...and, I am a VERY good shot (just in case anyone is thinking of breaking into my home).
So much for my weekend plans! :teeth:

Bad American? We have another choice term for people like that in my neck of the woods.... :rotfl2:

A metahor?! Hmmm...hot dog is the only thing coming to mind. ;) :goodvibes

I think everyone makes their own decision on guns. DH is a hunter, so in addition to dead animal heads on walls (don't get me started!) we have guns.

I never wanted to learn to use them until after a guy broke in while I was home. Then I learned. Kinda like locking the barn door after the horse is gone, I know. But I feel safer knowing that I can shoot anyone else who decides my home is their playground.

Other people feel safer knowing there is NO chance any of their kids will shoot themselves or each other.

Either decision is based on love and safety and - this being America - I support everyone's choice. :)

Darien, DH is a member of the NRA and he gets the magazine to prove it! I'm less into the political end of it and more into the feeling safe part. But I do like to shoot!

I agree completely with your points. Especially about the whole child safety thing. DW and I don't have kids of our own but we do get visits from her DS who has three kids. So I went out and bought a nice gun safe to lock up all the guns and ammo. Just in case curious little hands might one day find them.

For about $250 you can get a little electronic safe to keep by your bedside that reads your fingerprints and pops the drawer open - which is big enough for one handgun and some ammo. Perfect for self defense. Who wants to fumble for keys or combinations when someone is coming in your home?

Good for your hubby!!!! I'm a life member in the NRA as well. I love their magazines and their web site has a ton of helpful info on it as well. To save money (ammo is expensive) I reload most of my own. I've developed the official anti-rabbit round for my .44 magnum and my own "Finger of God" round for my 30-06 rifle, which has a nice scope for those long range shots.

Oh yes, and I'm aware of the whole "warm gun" metaphor thing. Being more of a literalist, I find both metaphor and the actual warm gun to be the source of much happiness.

Sorry to hear about your break-in. Hope things turned out ok for you. I experienced something similar and was glad I had a weapon on hand.

I find that women tend to just naturally be better shots than men. I don't know why, maybe its the whole eye-hand coordination thing. While a lot of men have to work at being good shots, a lot of women just pick the thing up and they are already sharp shooters. Its amazing to behold. My DW was that way. It makes me so proud of her!

I am all for people owning guns....especially liberals!! ;)

About the rest of the post... :bored:

Hi Beca! Is that a 9mm weapon? I was thinking about buying a 9mm for my DW because of it's limited recoil but haven't decided which brand or model to go with. Any suggestions?

Yes...and, it is the "sweetest" little gun!! It is smaller than most I tried, and the recoil is pretty limited. My dh couldn't hit a billboard with it...it really is too small for men, but for women, it is GREAT!!!

And, to the poster who was talking about "gun safes", ours is really cool. It can be opened by keys or combo...however, if someone tries to open it by combo and fails, the lights blink CONTINUOUSLY until someone hits the code to turn them off. This is an added feature for parents to know whether or not little ones have "attempted" to open the safe.

Thats a sweet feature to have on your safe. I wish mine did that. Now I've got "safe envy." :rotfl2:

Yes, my DW has small hands too. I've got a Berretta .40 cal with 13 round clip but its grip is too large for her to shoot comfortably, though she still put most rounds in the black on her first try with the weapon. Man she's a natural! I want to get her something that is more comfortable for her to shoot. There is the Lady Smith, a .38 cal revolver with pretty rosewood grips. But I think the 9mm is a better self defense round. And the clip ammo is much easier to reload in a combat setting.

We've been kicking around an Oct 2006 "budget" trip to WDW... you know stay at a moderate, get cheap airfare and all that. Don't know if we can swing it but for the food and wine festival, wowsers... that would be fun. <sigh> :moped:

I'll admit that the only movie that ever made me cry was "Ol' Yeller."

Obviously, whomever originally wrote this piece did not watch "Rudy."
