Back to School Bargain Thread

Our schools start August 18th here, so I'm definitely ready to start shopping. I noticed that our Target started to put up their patio furniture on sale. That's usually a sign that they are going to start clearing that area up for school supplies!

Next week (Week of July 4 - July 10), Walgreens will have 10 pack of pencils, 5 pack of Papermate mechanical pencils and 10 pack of pens for .19. Limit 3 per transaction (so you can go back and get more in a different transaction, if needed).

Thanks for the ads at walgreens for Pens. I will go next week, we run out of pens all the time too.

Count me in!

I have a DS starting 4th grade, and a DS starting pre-K...so I definately want to check out the sales. I usually hit Target, Walmart, and Staples...

I'm in too! Thanks to all of you for taking the time to keep us updated! :lovestruc

I got some great deals at Walmart and Office Depot last year so I'm looking forward to more. My DS will be in 1st grade (where does the time go?) and we have a generic list already.

Thanks again,
Heather

My DD is entering kindergarten this fall, so I'm new to this whole list thing. The school hasn't sent a list (or even info about whether she'll be AM or PM), but I'd like to take advantage of the sales if possible.

What kinds of items are typically on "the list" for kindergarteners or does it vary too dramatically to anticipate?

Thanks.

My DD will be starting K this year too. In her orientation packet it said that they only need a full sized backpack, everything else will be supplied. I can handle that! I will let her pick out some pencils, crayons, folder, etc to keep at home for her desk.

As a teacher I can't wait for the Staples sales. My favorite "sale" was locker cleanout day at school. I walked away with almost 2 packs of filler paper, a brand new box of colored pencils, and a binder. The kids were just throwing the stuff away! We also got a bunch of composition notebooks and a handful of pencils too.

Can you find lists on the school website? I don't know if they want the same supplies for half day kinder vs. full day.

My kids went full day and crayons, glue sticks, scissors (child safety) markers, hand sanitizer were all needed. 1 of my kids, the teacher provided everything for kinder but appreciated extra donations of glue sticks. The other two I had to provide everything.

Watch for clothing sales picking up after the 4th. When I worked retail, any summer item left on the shelf after the 4th of July weekend went on clearance the next morning. There is a definite drop off in summer clothing bought after this weekend. I find it a great time to stock up for BTS.

Thanks for the Walgreen and CVS notes.

I just picked up my DD's kindergarten list...
pocket folders, composition book, large beginner pencils, glue, glue sticks, blunt scissors, crayons, tissue, sandwich bags, sharpie, markers, baby wipes, dry erase markers, wide rule notebooks.

So, that will give you some idea...

Check the school's Web site. Our Wal-Mart/Target stores usually have printed lists for each school, too.

At my DD's school, the kindergarten list is HUGE! Way bigger than the other grades, because everything is communal. They each need 12 of the big glue sticks, for example. Plus, they need a pack of napkins, paper cups, paper towels, Clorox wipes, etc. That's the stuff that adds up because it's not necessarily on sale when normal school supplies are. Find the list as soon as you can, so you can start stocking up!

I found some composition books (the sewn in kind) for 15 cents at Walmart today. They are black and white but they do have designs like checkerboard and swirls...a little different than the normal marbeled look.

Walmart should get started on their school display on Monday probably. We do not nee too much. I have stocked up so much in the past years we already have lots of normal things.

Thanks for the heads up about the composition books. I teach 8th grade Language Arts and love to get these for my students to use as their journals. Last year I bought 150 spirals to give to my students to use. They worked great but I thought the smaller composition books might be easier for me to carry back and forth from home when I assess them. They also might be fun for the kids to use too since they are different from their regular spirals.

I, too, have stockpiled spirals from over the years when they are really cheap. I give them out to my students when I know they are out of their own paper. If I see them asking to borrow paper from others, I give them a new spiral to use and take to their other classes.

Many kindergarten teachers want child safe scissors, Crayola crayons, Crayola markers (sometimes both thin and thick in the original colors. I watch and grab the markers when they are 25 cents a piece instead of 2 - 3 dollars a piece. Glue sticks or school glue is usually on the list too. Some ask for the little paint box set too.

I, too am shocked by what kids often toss when they clean out their lockers at the end of the year. I just can't understand why kids toss new pads of paper, pens, markers, scissors when they can just take them home and save them for the next school year. I encourage kids to do just that - take them home and save them for next year. Some then do, but others just want to get rid of it. So, we have a recycling bin for supplies. Teachers and the librarian then use the materials at school. I often will also give the supplies to students in need that I know will take them home and use them or keep them for the next year.

Thanks everyone for posting the deals you find! :cheer2: I will be on the lookout and post anything I find.

thank you! most of the ads were missing from my newspaper this past sunday, so i never would have known about the latex gloves at walgreens!

Thanks for the suggestions on kindergarten prep. I hadn't even thought to look at the school's website - boy, have things changed since I was in school!!

Anyhow, no list on the website, but I saw some definite themes in your suggestions, such as glue sticks, crayons, markers, and scissors. I'll be snagging those for sure.

I have already stocked up on Clorox wipes, Kleenex etc. during past sales, so hopefully I'll be set with that kind of thing.

Thanks again!

If anyone is clothes shopping, PS Aeropostale has some t shirts on sale for only $5 on their website right now.:thumbsup2
