Back to School Bargain Thread

The new ad for Staples next week sale is posted on their site. Only one 1 cent bargain next week. Their brand school glue.

For those of you near a Pubix...they have Bic mechanical pencils 10 ct. pack at 3/$3 limit 6. So you are getting them for 10 cents each pencil.

They also have small elmers school glue 3/$1.

I have not read all the post but I wanted to add something I do to save money on school supplies. I purchase the plastic folders with pockets and prongs. I use the clear address size labels on them with my childs name and subject. At the end of the year I pull the label off and I can use it again next year (if the teacher requires a special color), sometimes I don't even need to pull the label off. I am going on three years with some of the folders and they still look new. If they write on them with pencil or marker I can't reuse them.

The teachers used them to take pictures of the kids at various events through the school year (which is honestly how I expected them to be used. My child is a terrible photographer when using a digital camera that shows you what the picture will look like.). The up-side is that they used the pictures to make a Kindergarten scrapbook that chronicled all their "important" events throughout the year that I couldn't be there for. (Snow cone days, their "P" party [when they studied the letter P, they all brought in snacks that started with the letter P], Halloween party/sockhop, field trip, Read Across America activities, etc.) I loved it; really, I did. But I still think the $$ would have been better spent going towards a digital camera just for kindergarten use. :confused3 I wouldn't have minded.

I see and I agree that the money would be better spent on the digital camera. When my youngest graduated Kindergarten we all received a cd with their pictures from the year, It is really cute and this way I could also email them out. It also is a lot cheaper printing them than developing film IMO.

I got DD's supply list for 1st grade yesterday. Here's what's on it:

Arts and Crafts Supplies: 4 boxes 16-count crayons, 2 4-ounce bottles Elmer's school white liquid glue, 1 4-pack glue sticks, Scotch tape transparent refill, 1 pair Fiskars Round point scissors, 2 pkg Washable magic markers

One year my middle DD had a teacher ask for the 16 count crayons so I went through and bought the 24 count crayons and placed the extra 8 in a bag for the teacher to do whatever with. I could not justify paying almost a $1 for 16 crayons when 24 crayons were 20 to 25 cents a box. I would buy 2 of the 2 packs on the glue sticks. I don't understand why teachers choose the more expensive items.

Oh as far as the crayons went, the teacher told me that next time I could just leave them all put together as she gave up on the 16 crayon idea.

The teacher probably assumed the 16 would be cheaper than the 24 and had the colors the kids would need. It seems like a good assumption, but that isn't the way it works for some reason. I'd love if parents gave me more of something than I asked for.:goodvibes

Also my Ds's teachers have asked for sanitizer. I bought the huge jug at Sams the other day. Ounce for ounce it was a better buy and most of the Middle School kids never bring in the items like this.

Heads up about Staples!

I haven't made it all the way through this thread -- so this may have already been written. But, I don't want anyone to have the same problem I did. Be sure to read the ads! The 1 cent specials at Staples this week are WITH A $5 minimum purchase! So, I was able to get two packages of pencils for a penny -- only because I also bought other items. Gone are the days of going there just for the penny items! :(

Oh well!

Anyone know if Elmer's glue is still on sale at Walmart this week? I know it was last week.

Are the Target Crayola markers that are on sale for $1 this week the washable ones? I don't want to go to the other side of town if they aren't.

Thanks!

Bless you! We love those big jugs! We just keep refilling the smaller bottles. Same thing with liquid soap. A small pump is $1.49, and the big refill jug that will refill the pump about 20 times is $4.99. Someone always seems to bring one of those in as well.

Got my dd registered and set to go today but anxiously awaiting the school supply list. They said her teacher has not turned in her list yet but would have it at open house night on 22nd. DD is too excited to get her stuff. She is the oddest child ever. Loves!!!!!!! school.

Frys here(Kroger store) had some nice sales from what I could see but thanks for all the shares. I will have to keep up as we get closer to 22nd. I suppose I could buy what I suspect will be needed and either use the others at home or take them back. :confused3

As a teacher, I am very irritated that our lists are not on the school website yet! We were required to turn in our list by June 1, so why is it not there!? Now, parents will look at the generic one put out by the district which isn't accurate for us.:headache:

I would say save your receipts just in case the list you see is not one for your child's classroom, but a generic one. That way, you can return things and not waste money.

All of a sudden, Target has their crayons and markers down to the same prices as WalMart. I also got a coupon at check out for $5 off a $25 school supply purchase. I'm not sure if I still need that many more things, but maybe I'll buy backups or some more things to donate somewhere. That's a pretty good coupon!

No, just the standard non-washable Crayola markers are $1. I can't recall what the washable ones were.. around $3, I think?

We just went with the CraZArt washable markers from Walmart. $.70 a pack of 11 markers. We've been using them for about a year now and they work every bit as good as Crayola, and with way more color combo choices. :goodvibes

Oh crud! I just noticed they weren't washable! I'll have to return it.:sad2: Did you notice if the CraZArt markers come in fine tip?

I know that's frustrating! I must say, our schools are on the ball. We get the supply list with the final report card.
