Back to School Bargain Thread

ok, i am back from my shopping trip.
-my walgreens had plenty of $0.29 pencil sharpeners, $0.99 crayola markers and $0.39 index cards.
-officemax didn't have any $9.99 4Gb flash drives out, but i asked and there were more in the back, so if you don't see any, ask a salesperson. they also offer a warranty for $2.99.
-k-mart was almost out of wide-ruled notebook paper (150 ct.). i got the last 7 packs.
-cvs was out of the $0.99 w/ $0.99 ECB paper mate pens, but there were more hanging nearby that i thought were similar, so i took them to the register and compared with my sales flyer, and sure enough, they were the same, so make sure to check.

got everything i went after AND i made it back to my DD's dentist office before her cleaning even started (yes, i left her there to wait, she's almost 13)! oh, and she had no cavities!

Is 99 cents a good price for the 10 pack of Crayola markers or will those go lower? I can't remember form last year.

2 years ago walmart had them for .88. Last year and this year they are $1. That is the best I can find and I look hard because I only buy crayola. They had the rose art markers for .70.

and 2 packs of pencils that had a tag on them that said .19, but now that I'm looking at my receipt I see that I paid .79. him.

Actually, at Walgreen's it's likely that they were just 19 cents off. I've noticed that they make their sale signs very misleading.

They actually did have pencils for .19 last week.

I went to Staples this morning on my way to work. I don't have a staples near my house, but there is one by work. I was able to buy the 2 packs of paper with the rebate and have that count as my $5 purchase in order to get the folders and pencils for 1 cent. So once I submit the rebate, I will get the paper for 1 cent each too.

Staples hid all of their cheap school supplies. It took us forever to find stuff. We found the pencils in a barrel and I asked my daughter to grab a couple of packs. She asked how many and I answered that we could get two. Well there was a woman picking through the barrel and she jumps at me and snaps that SHE CAN GET AS MANY AS SHE WANTS. lol I told her I was speakig to my daughter. Geesh...hate shopping for school supplies. :rotfl:

Did the teachers use the disposable cameras or was it for the kids?? I like letting my little one use the camera but that would kind of iritate me to have to buy one for the teacher's to use. Our teachers have the cameras or they can check them out from the library.

The teachers used them to take pictures of the kids at various events through the school year (which is honestly how I expected them to be used. My child is a terrible photographer when using a digital camera that shows you what the picture will look like.). The up-side is that they used the pictures to make a Kindergarten scrapbook that chronicled all their "important" events throughout the year that I couldn't be there for. (Snow cone days, their "P" party [when they studied the letter P, they all brought in snacks that started with the letter P], Halloween party/sockhop, field trip, Read Across America activities, etc.) I loved it; really, I did. But I still think the $$ would have been better spent going towards a digital camera just for kindergarten use. :confused3 I wouldn't have minded.

Do you think Lysol wipes would be okay instead of clorox wipes?

Also where can I get 10 red pencils?

Otherwise, my list is a dream list :)

My local walmart started putting out their back to school stuff today. I noticed pencils for I think .40 cents a pack, and I know crayola 24 packs for 30 cents a pack. Also, if you sign up for staples emails, you will know what the penny and dollar sales are on saturday before they go on sale sunday.

TRy an office supply or teacher supply store for the red pencils.
Go to Dollar Tree or General Dollar and get their brand of wipes.

Walmart has a two pack of red pencils with erasers. I believe they were less than $1 for the two pack.

So glad that I dont have to purchase supplies for my kiddos. I just have to get book bags and lunch boxes.

The Lysol ones should work. I've even taken in the house brand from Wal-mart and they worked well.

If you have more than one kid, you could go to Sam's, they sell them in packs of 3.

I just want to give a big THANK YOU for getting your kids supplies and considering sending in some extra.

I went to Staples today to get in on their one cent deals. As a teacher, I get to buy 25 of each item. I was able to get 200 pencils for 25 cents and 25 folders for 25 cents.

In regards to wipes--I don't mind the generic version of those at all.

However, there are certain items that generic are just not as good-crayons, pencils, glue are the main ones.

I got DD's supply list for 1st grade yesterday. Here's what's on it:

Writing Tools: 3 dozen #2 pencils, 1 4-pack of large flat erasers, 1 2-pack of black dry erase markers, 1 2-pack of yellow highlighters (Boys Only: 1 pkg of red pens)

Notebooks/folders/paper: 1 pkg of assorted construction npaper, 2 writing tablets, 3 wide ruled spiral notebooks (plain cover), 6 assorted colored pocket folders with brads, 1 1-inch 3-ring hard black binder, 1 pkg 3x5 index cards, 2 packs of wide-ruled notebook paper, 1 red plastic folder without brads

Arts and Crafts Supplies: 4 boxes 16-count crayons, 2 4-ounce bottles Elmer's school white liquid glue, 1 4-pack glue sticks, Scotch tape transparent refill, 1 pair Fiskars Round point scissors, 2 pkg Washable magic markers

Miscellaneous: 1 3-hole clear pencil pouch, 1 small pencil box, 1 ruler with inches and centimeters, 1 pkg of 25 clear sheet protectors

Housekeeping Supplies: 3 roll package of paper towels, 3 box package of Kleenex tissues, 1 8oz bottle of waterless hand sanitizer, 1 box of sandwich size Ziploc bags (Girls Only: 1 box Gallon size Ziploc bags)

Teacher's Wish List: colored copy paper, packages of white poster board, assorted markers, paper clips, white out (roll-on), rubber bands, reward stickers, "click" Expo markers, clothes pins, electric pencil sharpener, Clorox wipes, staples, Post-It Notes, hot glue sticks, Sharpie pens, Wal-Mart gift cards, Large clear packaging tape, push pins.

I've already bought some pencils that say "Fantastic First Graders" for her class (picture here: http://forteachersonly.com/static/products/2092U.php?item=2092U&pv=1). I will still buy the plain pencils, though, because sometimes they like for everyone to have the same things, and she might can give those out on special occassions.

I have a few of the items just lying arond the house, like a box of push pins and a TON of rubber bands. I will get extras of some of the supplies (like paper towels and markers and crayons) to give, and another set (while they're on sale) for mid-year replacements.

I have this (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Bostitch-EPS12HC-Commercial-Sharpener/dp/B000DZAT12/ref=pd_sbs_op_5) pencil sharpener. I bought it for my own classroom. I spent my instructional money multiple times over the years buying pencil sharpeners that the kids just burned out. They sharpen and never empty the tiny container, so the pencil shavings get caught up in the motor and it burns out pretty quickly. Have this happen a few times, and you've lost $40+ because the pencil sharpener has died. This pencil sharpener is commercial grade. The containment box is roughly 3 times the size of a "school" sharpener, plus, if the motor overheats, it has a cooling fan built in. I wonder if I could get other parents to pitch in a few dollars. If there are 10 other parents who would put in $5, it wouldn't be a bad investment. Hopefully, it would last forever... lol. (I love my pencil sharpener! Can you tell?)

I can totally agree with the electric pencil sharpener-mine overheats after a few pencils and it was a $50 sharpener.

This is my first year having a Staples to go to and I am loving the penny deals!!

Don't forget to drop off extra items at your local mission, battered women's shelter or the like. There are kids there who will never get a new school item and have nothing to start school with.

We buy for my niece and nephew and also for our local mission. The mission box is starting to fill. For just a few dollars you can buy notebooks, crayons, glue etc. Get them the name brands as they are better and what the other kids get.

In our town we have a group that provides a knapsack type bag and basic school supplies for every student in grades 1 to 6. this way no child is left without something new on the first day of school.
