Got back from a wonderful last minute trip to WDW with 3 year old dd sans dh & baby. We met up with my fellow DVCer aunt and 4 of her 8  kids!

Neither of us had stayed at VWL and wanted to try it out, especially with young kids wanting to go mainly to MK. Was only able to get 2 nights at VWL - moved to OKW for next 2 nights.

I was very, very impressed with VWL. It was an absolutely beautiful resort and I can certainly see why people would choose it as their home resort even with it's higher points structure. Ate at Artist Point & Roaring Forks - both were good - loved the convenience. Lobby was gorgeous. Pool looked great but was too cool to try it out. Ferry boat seemed like great idea.

I wouldn't mind staying there again but I doubt it will be for a few years. Here's why: DD was scared of the dark decor - she absolutely hated the beautiful lobby and kept her eyes on her feet. She complained about going to the scarey hotel even during the day - once in the room, she was fine.

DD was also scared of the ferry - very small & rocky. Also , the ferry gave me bad headaches every time. The ferry seems convenient except they are not big enough, especially, in the morning. It was freezing waiting on the pier in the morning with the wind blowing (warmer at the parks). There were cold & crying kids everywhere. When the ferry finally got there, we didn't make it on even though we were there early - only fit 30+, more than double that amount waiting and more coming. Instead of waiting for the next ferry (too cold), we hopped on the boat (open air) to the Contemporary and walked to the MK. We never seemed to have a good experience with the ferry boats that trip. It probably would have helped if was warmer - although, bigger crowds mean even longer waits. IMHO, a bus would have been more comfortable & just as convenient.

We checked out of the VWL and into OKW - a rack room was ready, so we drove our luggage over and checked-in right away. I had thought it would be more of a hassle to stay there so out of the way - but the minute we got there, a sense of relaxation just came over me. It helped that dd was much happier in the bright & airy surroundings. DD and the other girls loved just playing in the room & balcony. We drove everywhere (DTD, AK & Epcot)`1 and it was actually easier to load up the kids in the car than to wait for a ferry or boat, especially in the evening. I finally felt "home" and remembered why I loved OKW so much.

On our last day, it was finally warm enough to swim, so we pool hopped to SAB after check-out and before our flight home. DD absolutely LOVED the sandy shallow area of the pool. She had so much fun that day - I think she would have enjoyed staying there the entire trip!

I'm glad we'll be staying at BCV for the second part of our trip in September after BWV. She'll be spending a lot of time there - SAB will probably be closed to pool hopping then. Boy, am I tempted to do an add-on at BCV!! :p

Each resort was wonderful in it's own way. I just think each resort suits us differently depending on when we go, with whom, with how many, for how long, with how old, which parks, how active, and at what stage of life we are at. That's what's so great about the flexibility of DVC!

Now that I'm back, I'm going through withdrawal - September seems too far away! Anyone else feel this way? :D

Sleepy....thanks for posting your thoughts and observations on your stay.

I've never heard the WL referred to as "scary" before....but I can see how a 3 year old could be intimidated by that lobby!

The times we stayed at WL we did not have any problems with the ferry to MK....but that was the summer season and we didn't wait in the cold. Never had more people waiting than the boat could hold.

I'm so glad you found something you like about all the DVC homes you stayed in or visited. I think each has its charm and great points....I am looking forward to "sampling" the various DVC homes over the next several years.

Nice report.:)

WE had the same problem w/ our DD who was 3 at the time!! She hated it!! Those lanterns were enough to make her RUN through those walkways. All she kept saying the whole time was "I WANNA GO BACK TO THE WILDERNESS LODGE" meaning the ROOM of course! We ended up switching from a studio to a one bdrm on the 3rd day. We never anticipated spending as much time in the room as we did. That was her fourth trip and her worst. Never had a problem at the other resorts. It took her 3 days to actually get into the pool!! Needless to say we'll be spending the next few years at the BW. :D :D ;) Actually thats not such a bad thing either!! :D

I guess it's just a kid by kid thing. Our (at the time) 19 month old *LOVED* the Wilderness Lodge, and *especially* the lobby! He ran around, spinning in circles, playing ALL around the 'hot spring' and leading us on 'tours' all over the lobby. I guess it's really hard to predict what they'll be frightened of. Sometimes he gets spooked by stuff and I have no idea why.

Thanks for the great trip report! I can't wait for our first OKW visit!

Thanks for your report. We will be arriving at VWL on Saturday. We've never been there before and are really looking forward to it!

RweTHEREyet,

Rack rooms refers to inventory for rent directly through Disney. OKW was probably not sold out - had vacancies - so when I checked in they switched me from the unit originally assigned to me to an "open" room not assigned yet.

In fact, at check-in I asked for a first floor unit - they had one available and gave me that one to me.

Hate stairs, hate stairs!!! :D

It really is funny how different kids react to different things. My daughter was 3 when we were at VWL and she LOVED the 1BR unit. In fact, everytime we go back, she asks us if we are staying at Wilderness Lodge. She especially loved it when they would bring the animals over from Fort Wilderness for a meet and greet.

My kids ages 14,14,7,2 love WLV. Right now it is the only DVC resort they will stay in. We our adding on with BCV because of the pool, which is great with the 2 younger kids. We put a playhouse its a cabin in our backyard for them. When we went to purchase the lighting (indoor and outdoor) they insisted on the ones that looked liked the ones at WLV. They were very expensive, but they suggested that they would all be willing to consider the lights their birthday presents for the coming year. They love that cabin. They have named it WL cabin.

isabella43....first of all, welcome to the DIS boards and thanks for posting your first post! :)

My DD's are the same way...only WL (or now VWL) for them. But since we are going twice this summer, we were able to talk them into the BWV for the second trip. We are already planning next year and are thinking about OKW for a stay in April. So even though the WL theming got us interested in DVC, we are ready to sample them all!

The cabin playhouse in the backyard sounds very cool....imagine, bringing part of your "home" to your home! :D
