My friends and I are long done having babies but now I'm starting to go to baby showers for the next generation :) I'm invited to a shower for my nephew's wife and the invitation asks that we bring a book instead of a card. This is the second time I've seen this and I think it's a nice idea BUT...if I were buying a card I'd sign my name, throw it into the envelope, and tape it onto the wrapped gift. What do I do with a book? I don't want to write my name in the book in case they get duplicates and want to return it. I don't want to tape the book to the package either. Ideas??

I always write an inscription inside a book when I give it as a gift. "To baby X, With love from Auntie Sue" I figure with baby books, if there is a duplicate, one can life at Grandmas house or something.

If you don't want to write in it, just use a long ribbon and tie the package both lengthwise and crosswise, end with a bow, and put the book between the package and the ribbon. Use a sticker or hang tag with the to/from on it. I would usually do this anyway, I rarely buy a card because I'm cheap and would rather spend the extra $3/$4 on the gift.

I would just write in it. Even if they get two they will have different meaning from the people who bought it

We had many people do this for us. They just wrote in it, and I loved it. Very sweet and a wonderful keepsake.

I had some this book belongs to: disney stickers. I put one inside the book and wrote a note. If the book was a duplicate, it easily came off (I chose board books)

I have received a few books from friends family for DS (will be 4 in 2 weeks...boy how time flies) and I often forget who bought them but then I open them and read what people wrote and I love that. Especially if it was one of your favorites, or your childs or if you happened to always read something to your nephew.

I agree with PPs, I write my name with a message in the book as well. Then on the outside out of wrapping paper... I write To and From. :)

A great book if you can find it is "Bunnys New Shoes."

Just a suggestion: I love Absolutely, Positively Alexander by Judith Viorst. It contains Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day plus two more Alexander books. When I read the Alexander books to my library classes, all of the students (K-5) love them. Just a thought! :)

ETA: It's $15 something on Amazon with free super saver shipping.

I just received an invitation yesterday to my goddaughter's baby shower and in addition to noting store of her baby registry there is also a request to bring a book for the wishing well with an inscription included inside. This is the first time I've ever received a book request.

:)

We gave books to a friend who is having a baby. :) We did not inscribe them, just in case they got duplicates or they just didn't want them...we did not get books that were on their baby registry, we chose books that were loved by our kids when they were little. :) The recipients were thrilled when we explained why we chose those books, I'm sure they won't be returned. :) We also gave a gift card....we put the books and gift card in a small gift bag (the books were small board books) and got a small gift bag tag to put our names on, we tied the tag to the bag. :)

Love the idea of books!!! Why not make a cute bookmark with an inscription for the baby and your name. If they keep the book they can tape it in the front cover if they get duplicates they can keep the bookmark and put it into the book they buy to replace yours.

A dear friend bought "the Velveteen Rabbit" for my dd's baby shower. She wrote a lovely inscription.
A few years back she passed away after giving birth:sad1:

I treasure that book as much as her memory as it all I have left physically to remember how excited she was for my baby.
You go ahead and write in it. It's special.

Love this idea, never heard of it. I like the idea of the bookmark, from a pp. I always just write in the cover. I still have books from Grandmothers and Aunts that had inscriptions to me when I was little, I still treasure them for that very reason.
Since your connection is your nephew, how about a book that celebrates a male bond: Guess How Much I love You. I always saw the adult bunny as a Daddy instead of a Mommy.

or how about just getting them one of those really nice recordable storybooks as your gift? DD recorded one of them for my Sis in law when she moved away........
