I am throwing a baby shower for a friend and will be having a dessert bar with cookies, cupcakes, and chocolate candies. My dilemma is not knowing whether or not I should also have some food type items like nuts and finger sandwiches and such.

What do you think??? The shower will be at 2:00 in the afternoon.

I would give a food choice as well. If not finger sandwiches maybe quiche and a salad.

Yes, you need to. Not everyone likes dessert (I know, :confused3 ) but people who love it like me, still want something savory to go along with it. I think your ideas sound great!!

hmmmm.... can you be planning my shower? :lmao: I wouldn't mind all desserts! Especially if it is at 2:00 I doubt that people would be expecting a meal. Too late for lunch, too early for dinner. It's definitely a "snack time". My shower is going to be at 12:30. I think that we are having finger sandwiches and salads. Not sure though. It's hard not knowing what's going on when it is a party for you

Not everyone wants to eat sweets, and some might be diabetic too so if it were me I would have a couple other choices besides just desserts.

Maybe fresh veggies and dip, or a cheese tray with crackers.

No, since it's mid-afternoon, I don't think you "have" to serve other foods. It would be nice to include some fresh fruit or other "non-sweet" food(s). Be sure to state on the invitations that desserts only will be served so people know to eat lunch before they come.

2pm is a funky time for anyone to expect a meal, so I htink you'd be OK with the desserts and maybe a veggie tray and cheesesd and crackers like MIGrandma said.

Maybe word the invitiation something like "Come join us for desserts and coffee as we honor our bride"...then people will know what to expect.

I agree with this. Fruit is a good idea, and maybe some cheese and crackers as well.

How about adding a nice salad? Like a caesar salad with chicken? Or a pasta salad with beans?

I agree that having something like a fruit and veggie tray would be a good thing to have too. Not everyone wants or can eat candy/sweets. I don't think you have to serve "real food" though. Just snacks in general at that time.

I think that if you put on the invites something like:

Dessert Buffet
Sweets will be served

Then your dessert buffet will be plenty. Although I'd at least have fruit salad or fruit kabobs on there for those watching their weight, that certainly qualifies as dessert. A nice sweet dip (you can even buy a ready made one, my grocery sells them) would go well.

Here in NJ, you'd get a full meal, but I think you should serve something other than sweets. There are odd people (like me) who don't like dessert. Little sandwiches, cheese and crackers, salty things!

I serve food for everything. Come to my house at 2am and I will serve you a meal. I think if you word it that it is a cake and coffee party you would be alright but I would think you should put some real food out too.

I would server other food just in case there are diabetics or people that don't like desserts

I have to say I'm really shocked at some of these answers. Why on earth would a meal or real food be required for a bridal shower at 2 in the afternoon AND if it was specified on the invite that it was sweets only? I don't get it.

This is the problem with showers/birthday parties these days. Everyone thinks they need to be over the top. There IS such a thing as a cake/coffee party, and these days it's an economical way to entertain. I really, really don't get it.

I'd include a fruit and cheese tray as part of the desserts and then have some salty nuts sitting around. I don't think you need to serve sandwiches, etc., especially if it was billed as a dessert shower.

....I think a quiche is nice....or seafood orzo salad...yum-O!

I am throwing a baby shower for a friend and will be having a dessert bar with cookies, cupcakes, and chocolate candies...

...did you specify 'dessert baby shower' on the invite?

We've always served coffee/tea and cake at the end of showers, with cheese and crackers and a veggie tray as well as beverages. We've had nuts out also, to snack on as gifts are opened and people chat. I don't think there is a right or wrong way.

I don't understand why you are so upset by it. :confused3 The OP asked for opinions and she got them. Where we live we never not serve food. It doesn't matter what time the party starts. You will always get a meal. It is simply what we were brought up with. If what you are used to are cake and coffee parties then that is fine too. The OP simply asked what others thought.
