I'll go ahead and get started, and Jill can add comments and pictures later. When she puts the pictures in, it will be a lot more interesting than just reading my words.
July 23rd - Left in the evening, although I'm not exactly sure what time. Jill may know. Jill, John, Brooklynn, and I were in the rented van, Trent and Kristi were in the rear car, and Drew and Sam were in my car in the middle. We wanted them to stay between us so that they didn't get speed crazy and leave us in the dust. After a long night of driving, we got to the Florida Welcome Center. It was still dark, but we took pictures by the Welcome to the Sunshine State sign anyway. In time, and without a lot of details about stops for potty/stretch/drink breaks, we found ourselves very close, ready to start paying those famous Florida tolls. When road signs turned purple, green, and yellow, we knew for sure we had hit Disney property.
We drove into Pop Century and parked side by side in the front. Disney Bound, Disney Bound 2, and Disney Bound, Too! had made it to their destination.
The colorful Everything Pop sign was there to happily greet us, as it always is. Check in was average - not fast, not slow - but the rooms weren't ready, so we got lunch from the food court and went out to the pool to eat. Drew and Sam went on to Vans Skatepark, since bikes were only allowed on certain days, and this was one of them. The young people swam in the Hippy Dippy pool, and I sat in a lounge chair just enjoying watching them as I soaked up the fact that we were really finally there. We were all happy to be out walking, stretching, and moving around.
After a short time at the pool, Jill, John, Brooklynn, and I headed to DTD to get our annual passes, as we just had the vouchers. We went to World of Disney and the Christmas Store before heading back to Pop.
The rooms still weren't ready, so we just hung out in the lobby.
After just a few more minutes, we were ready to go. We had 2168 and 2169 connecting. They were right under the jukebox. I hadn't really wanted poolside, because I was afraid of the noise at night, but it turned out to be a good thing after all. We freshened up, caught the bus to Magic Kingdom, and then walked straight to the boat for Wilderness Lodge, as we were due any minute for our dinner reservations.
The Whispering Canyon meal was a great way to start the trip. We walked around in the WL lobby for just about three minutes before they called us. This is Trent's favorite resort, and he wants to stay there someday.
John and Trent got the Canyon Skillet meals, Kristi got wings, Jill got chicken, and I got the southwestern soup. It was good, but the portion was small. It was meant to be an appetizer, and I was using it as a meal, so that was understandable. I think Brooklynn had mac and cheese at this meal, but knowing her, the little eating machine, I'm sure she had bites from all of our plates! Our waitress was into her character, but she lacked some efficiency in service. She was very quick to bring out some huge silverware for Kristi after she dropped her fork, but she was very slow to bring Trent water after he had asked twice.
Kristi tried to resist asking for ketchup, since she had seen what happened at another table, but this girl eats ketchup on everything, so she gave in and asked...and received.
One of the little girls that brought ketchup to our table was having the best time doing it. I think she had been chomping at the bit for someone to ask, and she was happy to oblige. She brought many bottles and had a big smirk on her face the whole time. The food was good, especially the cornbread. Trent and John got plenty to eat as the waitress refilled their skillet portions. We used our DDE card for the first time, and it gave us a good start on getting it to pay for itself. When we were finished, we spent a few minutes taking pictures and visiting the Mercantile. I had been waiting all year to buy a Wilderness Lodge throw for the house, since I have a lodge theme in my den and kitchen, but I didn't want to carry it around that night, and resorts supposedly don't ship to rooms, so I decided to wait.
We headed back to MK and got fastpasses for Splash Mountain. We used baby swap, as would become habit for us throughout the trip. We were exhausted, so we headed back to the room, seeing some of Spectro as we left. Trent and Kristi ran and then went to the pool. They also picked up our fridge from swapper tmeyer. Drew and Sam came in later and headed for the water, too. We got to bed at a reasonable hour, at least reasonable for being in Disney World, and made plans to open Animal Kingdom for our first ride on Expedition Everest.
