Has anyone flown Spirit Airlines? I just booked 3 RT tickets to Orlando for like $660 dollars. I am aware we have to pay for everything, but I'm traveling with teenagers so we won't need to much on the plane. Thank you for your input.

Do the $660 include tax and all of the added fees?

I haven't flown Spirit but my DD has. She said that the seat and leg room area are very tight.

Have a nice trip.

I got 4 RT tickets (United) for Orlando for May for $900. They were about $30 pp cheaper a few days earlier but I didn't jump on it ($188pp). I bought the tickets and they have only gone up since.

The earlier and later flight times are still cheap but the more reasonable flight times are very expensive now. You can still get a deal if you want to leave EWR at 6am and return from MCO at 6am.

ps OP if you find a better airfare you have 24 hours from booking to cancel Spirit for a full refund. Make sure you know everything you are paying for.

I guess it depends where you're flying from. $220/ticket may be good from some places; not so great from others.

My main concern with Spirit, other than the fees, is they tend to have a limited number of flights per day. If one gets canceled, you can't easily switch to another.

We fly Spirit all the time to Orlando and LOVE it. Yes, there are fees. Research and know what they are So you won't be surprised. Yes, leg room is a little tighter but my 6'3" DH doesn't mind it on the 2 1/2 hour flight to MCO. But he didn't want to go cross country on Spirit. Yes, it is no frills. Bring your own snacks.
People mention SW for comparison all the time and for our location SW's sale price is consistently 2x Spirit's sale price. I just can't argue that. And SW can't garentee me seats all together.
Some will complain about Spirit's delays or cancellations. We have never been cancelled or had a significant delay. I think this depends on your location and how much business Spirit does there. Our location is a minor hub for Spirit. So lots of planes and support around. At a newer location or one that had few flights I could see problems being possible.

May I ask where you're flying out of?

Make sure to look up exactly how much their extra fees are. One carry on will add $100 to each ticket price round trip. If you want to sit together, it will cost a lot. I have always flown cheaper on Delta than with Spirit after all of Spirit's fees.

Last time I bought a ticket on Spirit, the flight was cancelled and I had to drive from Michigan in order to not miss my prepaid lodging reservation.

We have flown Spirit several times. We also use Frontier and Allegiant. We joined the Spirit club and have flown to Las Vegas for less than $40.00 a person from Pa. Are they the most deluxe airline - NO, are the seats small - YES, besides water you have to pay for everything including seat assignment. We usually buy Subway before we board any plane and take water with us so we don't miss the cookies or pretzels. We usually check one bag and have yet to pay for a carryon.(Not sure if we've been lucky but we have never been asked to show anything and have six people walk on with bags???) The planes have been as clean as the regular lines and the stewards very friendly. We had such a nice trip this past December and the pilot was "gabby" for most of the trip. Our girls were entertained and we had quite of few interesting lessons of the places we were flying over. Just keep in mind you have to pay for all the "bells and whistles" but for us it doesn't matter as we don't need them. Have a great trip.

I think it's relative to where you are flying from. We have found flights from Pittsburgh and Buffalo (we live in between) to MCO via Southwest for as low as $178 RT. The most I would pay to MCO is $250 PP. We have SW miles though, so it's a bonus to us to just be able to rebook at a lower price and get those miles back (or travel credit, if we booked with a CC).

I have heard things about Spirit, most friends I've spoken with said it was fine and it did the job, but complained about all of the extra fees. If the deal was really good, I'd probably give it a try, but I'm also probably willing to pay a bit extra for the comfort/ease of SW.

Spirit flies out of our local airport--offering great deals and it would be convenient. But--after being left stranded in Fl by Direct Air (4 yrs ago)--I will never again fly out of a small airport on a discount airline!! :-(

I have read too many bad reviews to fly with Spirit. I actually exclude them from every search I do. Usually with the fees it ends up being not much less (IME) so it's not worth it to book with them.

I have not heard fantastic things. $220 person would be at the middle of what I am comfy with to MCO. We typically pay between $150 - $250 for round trip on Southwest or Sun Country.
I wish you good luck!

We are trying spirit for the first time in may, flying from DTW to MCO, the tickets for 4 of us were about $740 including specified seats, 1 carryon and 2 checked bags (plenty for our family). I thought it was a great price and about $400-$600 cheaper than our normal Delta airline. BUT they have already changed our flight schedule one time, it was horrible times but we were able to change that back to better times. I am hoping that they do not have a schedule change again as it was pretty drastic the first time (~12 hours difference on both departure and arrival flights).

I think you'll be OK. A lot of times the schedule changes in response to gate assignments at the departure/arrival airport. May is just over a month away now, so I would think the schedules are pretty much set.

And remember for future flights: if an airline makes that drastic a change to the schedule, and you have alternative flights/airlines available, you have the right to cancel or reschedule the itinerary with no penalty.

We have flown DFW to MCO twice with Spirit. We pay for luggage when I purchase the tickets. I pack snacks and we buy drinks at the airport regardless of which airline we fly, so that doesn't matter to us. The three of us have been seated together every time without choosing seat assignments. The tray tables are small, but since we usually watch movies or read books, it doesn't matter. DH is 6'4" and doesn't think the seats are that much smaller than any other airline. He isn't particularly comfortable one way or the other. We actually like the fact that the seats don't recline. I think having someone recline into my space on other flights gives me less room than Spirit does.
We did have one delayed flight by a couple of hours, but I've had that happen on other airlines too.

We've flown Spirit and have never had a problem. That being said, when there is a problem, their customer service is nearly non-existent. They don't have partnership agreements with other airlines so you have no alternatives if things go wrong.

For peace of mind, I will sometimes purchase travel insurance through Berkshire Hathaway. It's affordable and can be purchased up until midnight of the day before your flight. Although, travel insurance won't help you get on your way if your stuck at an airport.

We fly frontier out of CVG and are members of their discount den. We are flying to Orlando in May and it was $38.00 round trip each. We watch the sales and are pretty flexible with our arrival and departure times.

That being said- a lot of people do not like frontier airlines because they tend to nickel and dime you and you pay for everything on the flight. To be honest from Cincinnati we are on the plane maybe two hours, and there is not much that we need. I'm not sure if I would use frontier on a super long flight, but it is what it is when we fly to Orlando. I have heard frontier and spirit are similar as far as staffing, and their lack of customer serice. For me- cheaper flights means more trips to Disney, so it is worth it.

Last Sept DH and I flew Spirit to Myrtle Beach and back. Yes, everything is "a la carte" but it still seemed like a good price. We usually fly SW so I DO hate paying baggage fees but even with paying the many singular fees, Spirit came out cheaper from PHL to Myrtle for our dates. Had no issues. Everything went smoothly both ways.

We fly Spirit from DTW to MCO several times a year. We never have had a problem. Always on time, cleaner than many of our Delta planes have been and I find the staff to be amiable. They are the only airline that flies straight through with no stops and that is a huge plus for us.
