Awareness bracelets.

I thought that the whole point of the awareness bracelets was that the money spent on the bracelet went to the cause, but is this the case? If you can buy them at any old store or from any old website I would guess that the store and website are profiting, not the cause. So, what's true? Is the money donated to Lance Armstrong's organization, breast cancer research, and the troops, or is this just a fashion statement?

I actually just purchased a 10 pack from www.laf.org (Lance Armstrong Foundation - wearyellow.com links to it as well.)
money goes to the chairty

as well as a 10 pack of the pink ones from Target...which I believe is the only place that is selling these and donating 100% of the profits.

$20 well spent IMO.

Just ordered 2 different styles of Autism awareness ones for my son and I off Ebay yesterday. I will wear them as soon as I get them in my daughters honor.

We bought Livestrong ones at the Nike store a couple of months ago.

Jacksonville is selling them now - "Waves of Welcome"... for the Super Bowl - all proceeds go to a children's charity there.

Santa brought everyone in our family the USO army green 'Support Our Troops' bracelets. It is not a fashion statement to us, simply a constant reminder of the love and pride for our soldier and what all our soliders are sacrificing for our country. I also wear a xtra set of my DS's dogtags daily. On occassion I'm known to wear the pink breast cancer ribbon for my dear Mom.

 Sandie

Sandie, where can i find the "Support our Troops" bracelets? I would be proud to wear one for our troops!!!!!

God bless America!!!

We wear blue bracelets that support The Marrow Foundation for marrow donation. They say "Life is a Team Sport". FIL died from lymphoma and my niece is a Hodgkins survivor thanks to a blood cell transplant. Yes, I think all of the bracelets are gimmicky and most likely a fad but that's ok to me. Most folks who wear them seem to do so out of love and compassion for someone and that's not a bad thing.

7-11 sells "Support the Troops" bracelets but they cost $3 with $1 going to USO. If you don't approve of the stores profiting then you may want to see if USO sells them directly, but I kind of see it as more of a public support kind of thing than the money itself. The (not quite) camo green doesn't match with anything at all but I love wearing my bracelet! :)

I wear a pink bracelet and my LiveStrong bracelet broke yesterday. I'd worn it everyday for the past year. I glued it in the shape of a ribbon and its on my dorm room door now.
I'm waiting for a green bracelet from the Gordie Foundation. Its to raise awareness about underage drinking on college campuses. A friend of a friend died of alcohol poisoning after a night of fraternity hazing, so his family started a foundation in his honor.

I wear a Yellow Livestrong bracelet. I noticed a lovely lady wearing one (from the DIS actually) and asked about it.

Everytime I notice it on myself I think about my dad that survived prostate cancer, my girlfriend with untreatable brain cancer, my grandma that died of kidney cancer, numerous relatives of friends that are fighting this horrible disease.
These are not fashion statements. The yellow rubber bracelet does not "go" with 90% of my wardrobe but I wear it anyways. If it clashes someone may take notice and think about the cause.

DS(9) wants a LiveStrong wristband, but I don't want to buy 10 of them from laf.com I want to make sure the money goes to the right people though. Where can I buy a single (real) LiveStrong wristband?

SIL just found out she has MS. Are there wristbands for MS?

I don't wear any but my DD11 and all her friends wear many. They are neat - and the causes are great - but just not something I wish to wear.

Ds9 wears black and white ones together that say "Stand Up Against Racism." I had to keep reminding him that they were *against* racism and not *for* it. Whenever people would ask what they meant, he'd say, "I'm for racism!" Doh! :headache:

I don't wear any of them. As to whether or not I would wear one, it would depend on what I'd be supporting.

I have the Livestrong one, breast cancer awareness, Austism, Praeder Willi and Children's Miracle Network. I don't wear them all of the time, but I will put them one on once in a while. :)

A neighbor gave DS and me each "Live Strong" yellow ones but I think they may be the knock-offs! :rotfl:

DS doesn't wear his very often because he seems to be compelled to take it off and play with it which makes me crazy, and I bet his teachers wouldn't be thrilled, either!

I actually like my yellow one, I just don't think to wear it.

The AIDS agency I volunteer with just had some red ones made that say "Hope. Compassion. Care." which I LOVE, but they didn't have them made in youth size so it falls off of my wrist. I thought if I wore it higher on my arm than my watch that maybe it would work, but it just doesn't. :guilty: I specifically asked the agency to consider doing a run of youth bracelets, but they said not very many kids would be wearing AIDS bracelets and it was too expensive to produce them. OK, fine. Maybe I should start wearing my red one on my ankle! (It is actually a little bit too tight on my ankle or I would do it.) DS would love to have one but it would be enormous on him.

I am for the Bracelets where 100% profits are going to support a charity. I think it was a wonderful idea.

I am VERY AGAINST the ones that have been made for fashion where the profits are not going towards charity.

I think you should still post your idea - a green DIS bracelet would be cool if 100% of the profits were going to support a charity. You could probably never get everyone here to decide what charity...

No, I don't wear any. DH does wear a id bracelet with the names of two soldiers in his career field that were killed in Iraq and Afgahn though. Remy has a "support our troops" one she wears sometimes.

I have a pink one - for obvious reasons! and a purple one that I bought from a friend raising money for the Relay for Live that says, "Celebrate Life" - which I used as my closer in the speech I was honored to give this year at our local Relay for Life.

Who cares if it's a fad - if it goes to a good cause? :confused3
