Awareness bracelets.

Santa brought my whole family support our troops bracelets (he bought them from someone on the dis). I think it is an incredible way to show support....fad or no fad.

We have the yellow and pink ones. My 2 year old daughter has been in treatment for about a year now with Leukemia. My MIL is a Breast Cancer Survivor. I don't wear mine to remind me what what I'm aware of but to honor the ones I love and also to fund cancer research.

I don't find them Gimmicky at all.....

You can go here Awareness Bracelets and get any awareness item you would like. I am ordering for the entire family.

Unfortunately, if you want the yellow LiveStrong bracelets, this site doesn't have them. Only Wearyellow.com has those.

I wear the yellow LiveStrong (ordered from the website - money goes to the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research) and the pink Share Beauty Spread Hope breast cancer braclets.

I have the Yellow Livestrong bracelet, my entire sorority wears the purple Hope one for Breast Cancer, and then I am getting the AIDS and Ovarian Cancer ones when I get back to school in February.

Do you wear one? If not, would you wear one? Any thoughts at all? ( I'm asking this with a purpose, though I don't want to reveal that purpose just yet ).

EDIT: Do you have more than one? What about your kids?

Papa Deuce, when are you going to let us in on your reason for asking? Just curious.

Actually, I may not. Some of these answers have made me rethink my position on something, and I don't want to upset anybody.

We all wear LiveStrong ones in our house. My dad got his DEd from Utah State and gave my boys blue ones from there but only my youngest (13) wears it. The LiveStrong is in honor of my mom who lost her battle almost 3 years ago.

I don't wear one. They remind me too much of the MIA bracelet I wore for a guy who was MIA during Vietnam. I wore that thing for 3 years. I'm happy to say that he was eventually freed and returned home.

I have no problem with others wearing them as long as the money goes to support a good cause. Sometimes I think they become a fad and they loose their true meaning.

I have a yellow livestrong one and a pink breast cancer one. I wear the yellow one because my grandpa died of cancer and my great uncle is battling cancer right now. I wear the pink one because I like it. I think they are really cool because it helps raise money for a good cause. I am not sure I would wear one if it were not for a cause.

I wear my Lance Armstrong Livestrong band every day w/o fail. I wear in in honor of my dad who is fighting cancer and will not win w/o a miracle. I waer it in memory of many loved ones who have died of cancer. It isn't a fad to me at all. It is a real cause. Cancer research isn't a gimmick so that is why I support it.
I believe the yellow bands esp. (& the others have also helped) have made many people more aware of cancer research and I'm all for it. Oh and I'm old...almost 40.

Papa Duece, I'd love to hear what your thoughts were. Obviously the thoughts on this thread are mixed. Doesn't make it right or wrong...

I thought that the whole point of the awareness bracelets was that the money spent on the bracelet went to the cause, but is this the case? If you can buy them at any old store or from any old website I would guess that the store and website are profiting, not the cause. So, what's true? Is the money donated to Lance Armstrong's organization, breast cancer research, and the troops, or is this just a fashion statement?

My 3 girls wear the yellow Livestrong bracelets.
I'm sure they originally wanted them because it was becoming trendy.
It provided a good opportunity to sit down and talk with them though. My mother died of cancer before any of them were even born. We talked about being aware of what they meant and I explained to them why they had to wait longer to order them directly from Lance Armstrongs' site (even though they were on backorder) rather than getting them right away from someone on e-bay who was just trying to make a quick buck.

I have one. I don't wear it, but it's hanging on my calendar where I see it every day.

I don't have any right now, but the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America is now selling blue ones that say 'Got Guts?' and since I live with Crohn's, I am inclined to order a pack of 10 for my friends and family. I found them amusing, and all proceeds go to the foundation. I think my family would get a kick out of it, and it might just open up some conversations with others about the two diseases.

As far as the bracelets go, I think they are a trend, but not a new one - I think MOST people honestly wear them with the intention of showing support for the cause and supporting the cause financially a bit.

If they made one for Autism, I'd wear it. Other than that, none that I'd wear at this time.

They actually do have ones for Autism Awareness http://www.autismlink.com/order2.shtml And it looks like 100% goes to the charity.

Me--I wear a pink target "Share Beauty Spread Hope" because both my mother and grandmother died of breast cancer.

I'm also looking for the Red Insulin is not a cure bracelet because I have diabetes and show my support any way I can! I guess they aren't as "popular" as the other ones.

I wear a pink breast cancer awareness bracelet because my mother, aunt and sister in law are survivors!

I have one too, that a coworker gave me for Christmas. My mother, her sister (my DAunt Judy), her mom (DGrandma) and one of my close friends are all survivors. My OB/GYN has told me since I have so many women in my close family who've been survivors, odds are I"ll get it too eventually. :( Which kinda sucks.

I want to get a Support Our Troops bracelet and maybe an AIDS awareness one. I love my BC Survivor bracelet. :)

So, did PapaDeuce ever tell us why he posted this thread? He said there was a reason...

I can only speak for the Livestrong bracelets, but the only places to buy them where the money goes directly to charity are Niketown stores and wearyellow.org. There may be one or two other stores - pretty much any place that only sells it for a dollar. Some stores (like gas stations for example) bought boxes from the charity, but then charge 1.99 or so for the bracelet, so that they make money off of it. In that case, money did go to the charity, but the store is then profiting from it, which upsets me.

Santa brought everyone in our family the USO army green 'Support Our Troops' bracelets. It is not a fashion statement to us, simply a constant reminder of the love and pride for our soldier and what all our soliders are sacrificing for our country. I also wear a xtra set of my DS's dogtags daily. On occassion I'm known to wear the pink breast cancer ribbon for my dear Mom.

Thanks for the reminder about POW/MIA bracelets. I had one many years ago, and I wondered over the years about his status. I remembered his name and just did a search, and found a website about him. He was a pilot, and his plane crashed. There was no sign then, or ever, of any bodies at the crash site, nor has he ever been found. :(

I don't have an awareness bracelet, but my kids do. If the proceeds are going to a good cause, I don't care why anyone chooses to wear one.

I agree. When those stores (and Ebay) are selling the Livestrong bracelets for more than $1.00, they are selling them illegally. When they first came out with the bracelets, I was considering doing them for a fundraiser for the ACS, until I found out you are not allowed to. The Lance Armstrong Foundation released a statement that no one other than their foundation is allowed to profit from these bracelets. Alot of people still do it anyway...it's sad. Someone like Lance Armstrong tries to do something good and others try to profit off of it.
