ours is small and we just want need floors, tile shower, new toilet and sink vanity. Just wondering if we have enough in the budget?

I will be starting a master bathroom remodel next month. I have large master bathroom and taking it to the studs due to leaking bathtub and shower (on separate ends of bathroom). The contractor is charging $14,000 in labor and some materials for shower and paints/drywall. We go out and choose all materials and purchase them. I've already purchased tile which was $4700 (had to buy 400 square feet of main tile for floor and shower, and the other tile was accent band and shower floor)...just to give you idea of size. We had a much smaller bathroom quoted out, about 7 feet by 9 feet, and contractor wanted $8000 just for labor (this is not the contractor we're using). I believe it depends largely on area that you live. I just moved from California to southeast and thought for certain nothing could top those high prices in California. I was wrong. We do live in an area of higher priced homes and I can tell by some of the many contractors that were out to the house that they either think you have a lot of money because you live in a certain area or they're researching your house on line. I had a few contractors who accidentally slipped and knew what I paid for this house. If you have a small bathroom and don't want to break the bank, find a good contractor (hopefully by word of mouth) and do the foot work yourself. All the things you listed are all available at Home Depot.

We were quoted approx. 20,000-25,000 for a complete remodel on a smallish bathroom. Needless to say, it hasn't happened.

I never dreamed it would cost so much (and both of our bathrooms badly need it).

We are in Texas.

Depends on how much work you are willing to do and if you really need the shower. We redid our bathroom, new paint, new vanity, faucet, toilet and tile floor for about 1200-1500$ possibly less. We left the tub alone but if we had replaced it I would assume it would have added another 500-1000$ depending on what we replaced it with. I purchased a midline vanity that was about 300$ with a nice matching wall cabinet and mirror, light fixture was about 45$, 80$ for the faucet, 130$ for the toilet. It isn't too hard to do. Just googled instructions and followed directions. Hubby did the plumbing bit after a couple of youtube videos and talking to my brothers. we were quoted at least 3 times what it cost us to do it ourselves.

Very specific as to size of the bathroom and class of materials and units you want. Easy to price out the materials, units, and floors. Labor would be specific to your area. I'd never remodel a bathroom for $25,000 on what I would consider a smallish bathroom, that's insane. That price, a smallish bathroom in that poster's eyes is probably half the size of my entire old house.

I don't consider gutting down to the studs as remodel. That would be completely rebuilding.

Dear God, those quotes frighten me... Insane... we are thank God set for a long time with our baths.. I just know 15 years ago for my Condo in Chicago. I paid some guy 800 dollars just to put tile OVER my existing tile floor. My bathroom was so small you could only really turn in it. I paid also 200 for him to re-do my tub... some paint thing.. I have a very old tub iron maybe?? but there is specity paint and it really did look like new.

We did two using a small general contractor who allowed us to buy our own tile, toilet, sink, vanity fixtures and lighting. He ordered the tub surround.

#1 was a hall bath. Gutted to the studs. This bathroom got the tub-surround. Cost was about $4500
#2 was a very small master bath (we think it used to be a walk-in closet), also gutted to the studs. It had a mini-tub that we took out and had a custom tile shower built. Again, we bought all the materials. Contractor just gave us the measurements and told us how much tile we needed to buy. Cost on that one was about $6000, due to the custom tile shower.

Both bathrooms got new subfloors and plumbing.

We were quoted 5k for a kid's bath, which included replacing tub, changing out a window, replacing toilet, redoing tile on floors and in tub/shower, and installing new shower/tub fixtures.

SO, my dh watched youtube and we did the entire thing ourselves. For about $2,500, we did all of the above (had tub reglazed vs replacing) plus replaced the 72' countertop, painted the cabinets, replaced the mirrors, lights, a couple of doors in the bathroom that were warped from moisture, new sinks and faucets and replaced the medicine cabinet.

We were told our master bath would be about 15k with materials. We need to have some plumbing moved in there and my dh does not want to do that so we will most likely contract out some pieces of that project but still try to do most ourselves.

There are just too many variables for anyone here to give you even a ballpark figure. It could be $2000 or it could be $20,000.

Well, how much is in your budget?

We can find a bath style for you.

You can get a 99$ vanity or pay mucho $'s - depends on your taste!

The toilet can be had for lots of prices - just depends what you want.

There is tile for 1.00 a square foot or 20.00 a square foot. (and more!)

good luck and enjoy your results - I've been ready for a bath remodel since I last did it - I didn't like what I chose!

Our first quote came in yesterday at $25000 so needless to say I'm getting another estimate or two!

Ours was just a smidge over $5000. Then, we refinished the tile and tub for another $1000. So, $6000 total.

That included new floors, woodwork, vanity, mirror, faucets, toilet, doors, and lights.

Mine was $40k. Gutted. Everything new. But handmade tile, custom cabinets....

We had new showers put into two different very small bathrooms. One included a new toilet. Some flooring work done but not much. Each one was about $5k.

Our bathroom was about 5000. We did the demo, my parents disposed of all the junk. I did all purchasing, and we paid my brother to do the installations. Tiled the entire shower and all the way around the room halfway up. It is a tiny bathroom (5x8 I think)
The real question is- how big is your bathroom, and what do you want to pay? Have you been to the store and priced out your stuff? 25 sounds high, but maybe you're in Manhattan and your "small" bathroom is 15x10 :)
Good luck! And I hope you have a second bath to use while that one is down!

I have been following this thread just to hear other people's experiences. I'd love to redo a tiny bathroom, but now I am thinking maybe a fresh coat of paint might be the way to go...

We gutted our bathroom to the studs. My DH did most of the work. We only hired a plumber and someone to plaster. We installed a heated travatine floor, have tile 1/2 way up the wall, and the entire shower wall is tiled. We bought a custom 60" vanity and a granite top. The cost was $12,000. $2000 was paid to the plumber and plasterer and the rest was materials.

I do remodeling in Massachusetts. From your description a bath that size would run around 8k. You can save yourself money by purchasing your own vanity, tiles, toilet etc... If you really want to cut the costs you could gut the bathroom yourself ie: removing toilet, vanity, sheetrock, old flooring, etc...

We did ours ourselves and it cost around 5K. We never got quotes because we knew they would be outrageous.

Quite important. We bought our house when my wife was 8 months pregnant. Only 1 bathroom. The day we bought it, I got a shower in the basement because she was directly above me taking a shower. Thus, had to gut and fix, plus had to get rid of the carpet that was in the bathroom (and kitchen.)

It was just a 5x7 bathroom which meant 5x5 area for a piece of floor vinyl. I pulled the toilet to lay the floor and as I was getting ready to bolt it back up, she's standing there jigging around, "When you going to be done?" I say, "In about 5 minu...." CRACK. Toilet cracks in half and falls in 2 pieces.

I look at her wide eyed, "How late is Lowes open?" It's a bit past 8:30, they close at 9, I'm 45 minutes away, and I have an 8 month pregnant wife who needs to pee. I made the 35 mile trip in 20 minutes, 2 minutes in the store, and 20 minutes home.
