Average price for bathroom remodel?

Quite important. We bought our house when my wife was 8 months pregnant. Only 1 bathroom. The day we bought it, I got a shower in the basement because she was directly above me taking a shower. Thus, had to gut and fix, plus had to get rid of the carpet that was in the bathroom (and kitchen.)

It was just a 5x7 bathroom which meant 5x5 area for a piece of floor vinyl. I pulled the toilet to lay the floor and as I was getting ready to bolt it back up, she's standing there jigging around, "When you going to be done?" I say, "In about 5 minu...." CRACK. Toilet cracks in half and falls in 2 pieces.

I look at her wide eyed, "How late is Lowes open?" It's a bit past 8:30, they close at 9, I'm 45 minutes away, and I have an 8 month pregnant wife who needs to pee. I made the 35 mile trip in 20 minutes, 2 minutes in the store, and 20 minutes home.

I hope your wife can laugh about it now! LOL :)

The cost varies GREATLY. The biggest factor will be if you can find a contractor to do the work at a reasonable cost. The prices some contractors charge is insane, and at some point it is probably worth it to just do some of it yourself. Luckily we have found two reasonably priced contractors in our area. I’ve done two bathroom remodels (one at my MIL’s) and both were around $2500. We did new tile flooring in both, and refinished the bath/shower instead of getting a new one. In my bathroom at home we got a new vanity and mirror at Homedepot for around $300. We usually research and buy the materials ourselves, and then just have the contractor install them.

We gutted our hall bath down to studs, only leaving the bathtub - not a tiny bathroom, but not huge. We did all the demo ourselves, hired out the plumbing, granite, and tile, bought a vanity and installed ourselves, did drywall ourselves (I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING YOUR OWN DRYWALL!), scraped ceilings ourselves. We bought the materials we wanted and had them installed for the stuff we hired out. Our final cost was around $5000. We were working on it after work and on weekends, so it took forever. We had gotten an estimate from a contractor for $12,000, so the hassle was worth $7000 to us.

My husband travels and has NO time to do anything himself. Our trouble is finding anyone to give us another estimate. Contractors around here are scarce. All young people go to college so those in trades command top dollar due to no competition
