OK, I am sort of new to this whole process, our first reservation I booked at 11 months out, no problem. Now DH and I are going back in August, we are about 30 days out from our stay. We have a reservation at AKV, but would prefer BCV. I saw online that studios are still available for our dates, do they ever make those available again to DVC members or do the inventories always stay separate?

The only way to be absolutely sure is to call MS and ask for your specific dates.
If the availability you are talking about was at CRO, I do not believe that they are ever returned to DVC inventory, but it doesn't hurt to call and ask.

At this point the inventories are completely separate.

60 days prior to the date, any unreserved points rooms can be sent to CRO for rental to the general public, this is known as "breakage". My understanding is that MS can still access these rooms for points reservations. What you really don't know is if those rooms online are rooms sent to CRO because of trades or rooms that DVC itself owns, or if they are breakage rooms.

I'm not sure I follow what is going on. Are you saying you are booked into AKV for August and want to change to a studio at BCV? Just be aware that if what you have booked already at AKV costs more points than a studio at BCV and you are 30 days or less from check in, any points that are freed up will go into holding. Points in holding can only be used to book something 60 days in advance and cannot be banked and will expire at the end of your UY if not used.

You say "unreserved points rooms can be sent to CRO" does that mean it is up to MS as to whether or not they give them to CRO?
And once they are given to CRO, MS can still you them to make points reservations.
Is that correct?
That would makes sense, otherwise you would never be able to make a points reservation less than 60 days out. Is there a point when MS can no longer access them.

As DebbieB said this is typically done at 60 days out; from what I remember how/when it is turned over to CRO is based on historical booking patterns. DVC transfers points inventory over to CRO(which may then be booked for cash through CRO) but MS also has the ability to pull back villa to 'points side' so this is how it is possible to sometimes get reservations on points at <60 days. But as far as I know, just because you see DVC inventory through CRO that doesn't 100% guarantee that MS can pull a villa back over to book on points because some inventory of DVC villas available through CRO is due to trades that members make outside of DVC resorts portfolio ( as in when a member uses points to book Disney cruise, etc). And a certain percentage of DVC is still owned by Disney Vacation Development and that can be turned over to CRO by DVD to be booked for cash as well.

:)

I understand about the points that are traded out and that Disney owns a small percentage of all resorts, it was just the "breakage" points I was referring to.
I assume the breakage points if available could be used right up until checkin.

Thank you to all you veterans for your help! It's helpful knowing how the system works!

Yes, that's correct. I once got a studio at BCV for one night a week before. I don't know for sure if it was a breakage room, there could have been a member cancellation.

I think most of the "breakage" inventory can be pulled back from MS. I called a couple of years ago for a last minute vacation (maybe just over 60 days out) and they had all but one of the days available at SSR, he put me on hold and came back about 10-15 minutes later and said he got the last day. They pulled a CRO day back to finish the reservation.

Ultimately I got a waitlist at AKV savannah view.

Yes, that's how I understand it regarding breakage inventory(if available can be used up to last minute). But I'm not 100% sure if there may also be a possibility that at 30 days or less they could also pull from traded or Developer inventory as well :confused3

Debbie wondering if you'd know if it's possible very last minute for traded or developer inventory to also be brought over for points booking ? I don't think this is done, but not certain; it would seem wasteful to let it sit there unused if nobody is booking it cash.

Not usually. There has been stories of last minute "pixie dust" where they moved some rooms around.
