Autographs What kind of Sharpie do you use?

My family and I were in Animal Kingdom earlier today and my son wanted to get Donald Duck's autograph. I pulled a green sharpie out of my back-pack and the CM quickly told me they could not use green sharpies and instead we used a blue one.

Why can't they use the green ones?

Because nothing will take the green ink out.

It must depend on the character? I bought the multi colored pack of Sharpie Click-its for our last trip and we had several characters sign in green... Tinkerbelle and Dopey were just two specifically that I remember off the top of my head. Does this mean that I shouldn't expect to use the green pens on our next trip?!?! :confused3

Yep...retractable sharpies here! I bought a set of either 8 or 10 colors. They are great!! Also, if you have any photos or darker objects for the characters to sign, consider a silver sharpie...the autograph becomes a lot more visible on the item. I use them a lot to have musicians sign albums etc.

Slightly off topic, but what's best for getting autographs on fabric? My niece wants to get them to sign a shirt (I know she can't be wearing it at the time ;)), but what would be permanent, but also not spread (so that they are still readable)?

Permanent fabric markers.

I used the retractable Sharpies on our last trip (be sure to buy them before you go ... they did not sell them in the parks). Last trip tho I got autographs on a blank Vinylmation Mickey. In the past when we used books for autographs we bought the pens that they sold in the stores where we bought the books.

I love that idea. We have three full autograph books, and something new would be great. What did you have the characters sign with, Sharpie retractables? Did non-face characters have trouble signing it? Did you buy a 9" Mickey?

Update: Okay, not too sure of this answer, so asking everyone.... do the vinylmation Mickeys only come in 3" and 9"?

another slightly off topic question here. for t shirt signing, do you ave to take something hard to put on the other side of the shirt so they can sign it??

Do you use the sharpies for the autograph books from Disney? Do they bleed through the pages?

We have used them in 4 different Disney autograph books and in a Creative Memories 7 x 7 scrapbook and never had bleedingthrough the paper. :thumbsup2

Big pens, sharpies work great!!! as long as what you want signed is not on your body, it is signable. Don't wear a shirt on and expect them to sign it, it has to be off of your body. Green sharpie is not supposed to be used but there are different ways CMs approach this......ranging from letting it go to being careful to asking politely if they can sign with other markers, face characters usually don't have trouble signing in green. A large vinylmation is the best to get, it will be hard for them to sign sometimes but they usually take the extra step to make it work. You may need to hold it for them while they sign. PLEASE resist the Kooky Klickers. They work fine for face characters, so let them be used for that and bring sharpies for fur. Trust me, they are horrid to sign with.
Have a Magical Day!!!

Ahh yes, I'd like to have a talk with whoever invented kooky klickers...:sad2:
Another note, very fine-point pens, the kind where the ball point is like the eye of a needle, often rip through the pages. The characters always feel bad for doing that. Sharpies/retractable sharpies are great!

I'm so sorry I didn't answer sooner ...I did just send you a pm but figured I'd post here too in case anyone else wants to know.
I'm pretty sure that the Vinylmation Mickeys just come in 3" and 9". I used a 9". I planned on doing this before we went on our trip so I brought along retractable Sharpies in multiple colors. Last summer when I was there they did not sell Sharpies in the parks (not sure if that has changed yet or not but to be on the safe side take them along with you). The characters actually did fine with it. The only one who had trouble was Buzz but he was a real trooper. He usually uses a stamp instead for signing but he did manage to sign the bottom of my Mickey. I noticed not long ago that they now sell other colors besides the plain white Mickeys. I'd love to use another color next time. As you can see there was plenty of room for more signatures on my Mickey ...

Thank so much :thumbsup2 I got your PM. I love the pictures.

For those who are raving about how wonderful Retractable Sharpies worked, did you buy the Fine point or Very Fine point. They sell both. I went to the office store tonight and tried them both out. Fine seemed a touch thick, Very Fine seemed a touch thin, so I left with nothing. LOL. Advice please? I am thinking about this WAY too much. :)

We went twice and used really big pens from the Dollar Tree. Most characters/handlers commented on how great they were for the characters with large hands. We did not have a problem with ripping of pages, but we did not use the Disney autograph books. I do scrapbooking and used a regular scrapbook the first year and used small index sized printed papers with a Disney theme from CM the second year. Made it easier to make a book for each child, especially since DS did not want any pictures with princesses.

Meeting characters is one of the best parts of our trips!!!

Here is what I do...
We have 4 kids, so for each kid I put together a gallon size zip lock bag full of the stuff we need, on the outside, I put a label with their name and address- in case it is lost (we had an autograph book mailed back to us in the 80's- :thumbsup2)
Inside it, I put their autograph book, 2 retractable Fine (not very fine) sharpies, a pillowcase hooped in an embroidery hoop, and a fabric marker.
The kids usually have a theme for the trip of who they have sign their pillowcase...when we get home, I embroider their names and the dates of the trip. I also put a label in the autograph book, and on the pillowcase.

Keeping them together like this makes it quick and easy to get the books, and needed supplies, instead of wondering where I put that *($&^% sharpie :lmao:

Which reminds me, I need to get it together for this trip!!!
