I'm renting a minivan for a week in June and have checked multiple companies and codes. I did find a good base rate of $250 at National using a code I found posted in this forum. What shocked me was that with fees, etc. it added another $100 to the price. I also see that bump with other companies. Are there other codes or PC's that can help knock down the fees?

Thanks.

All rental car companies charge taxes and fees on top of their base rates -- not just in Hawaii, but everywhere in the United States. That's how it's been for decades. You'll usually see some that are percentages; some are per day, and some are per rental. At Honolulu Airport, expect a Customer Facility Charge, Concession Recovery Fee, Rent Tax Surcharge, Vehicle Registration Fee / Weight Tax, and State Tax (but nothing that;s called a sales tax).

The rental car companies are required to pay, so they collect from the their customers. It's no different than when you pay a sales tax at a department store, except that you pay much for on top of a car rental (as a percentage of the base price) than on a shirt at a department store.

I'm old enough to remember when, in most places, there was just the base rate plus whatever the local sales tax was. Then airports, states, cities, and other taxing agencies figured out that they could collect more money from renters, instead of raising taxes on local residents (local voters). Now, in some places, the taxes and "fees" (essentially more taxes, but sometimes a way for a rental car company to break out a specific business cost) are almost as much as the base rental.

The good news it that rental car websites also quote the total price, including taxes and fees. So just look at the bottom line.

I've been comparing prices too. It looks like it would be a whole lot cheaper if you rent from the airport vs from the resort itself. I've spoken with Alamo, which is the company connected to Aulani. They say basically there is no change in daily rate until you hit 7 days, then they will just charge you a 5-day rate. Also, don't forget the $35/day parking fee at Aulani!!!

With car rentals, the weekly rate is normally 5 times the daily rate. Days are 24-hour periods, not calendar days.

For example, if the daily rate is $50, you can keep up a car for up to one 24-hour period for $50 (plus taxes and fees). For up to four 24-hour periods, it would be $200 (plus taxes and fees). Then, for up to seven 24-hour periods, it would be $250 (plus taxes and fees). Although the base rate is the same for 5 days or 7 days, the total is likely to be somewhat higher for 7 days because some fees are calculated on a per-day basis.

If the base rate for a car rental at an airport and a car rental elsewhere is the same, the rental at the airport will normally cost more because airports impose so many fees.

Hotel guests at Aulani pay a hefty parking fee, but DVC members staying at Aulani on points do not. (The points include parking for one car per villa.)

Another rental car option at Ko Olina (where Aulani is located) is Enterprise at Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club. It's walking distance. Using the free Ko Olina Resort shuttle between Aulani and the Marriott is also an option.

. . . Are there other codes or PC's that can help knock down the fees?

1) There are no codes or discounts on taxes and fees.
2) The government doesn't need to do that.
. . . they don't have to compete
. . . you want car, you pay the fees
. . . they are a HUGE revenue stream
. . . they figure, like Orlando does, if you can afford a vacation, you can afford the fees/taxes
3) Of course, Disney feels the same way, by charging for parking at the resort.
