August vs. late December visit?

trying to decide between a 3 day trip in early/mid August or December 27-29th?

I am going to guess the crowds will be lighter in August and the weather warmer but Christmastime has the decorations.....

We have seen some of Christmas stuff as we visited several years ago over Veteran's day weekend.

Which time period would you pick and why?

Well, if crowds are a serious concern for you, your December dates will be very crowded. There may even be gate closures due to the parks reaching capacity at some point during the day on those dates. It is still possible to have fun during the last week of December, but it will take lots of planning and a positive attitude.

I would take August in a heartbeat. More daylight and warmer weather.

Unless you want Holiday decorations/theming, I'd go for August. The later in August the better for getting fewer crowds. CA heat is very manageable with a frogg toggs chilly pad around your shoulders and a good sun hat.

We're also considering an August trip. We'd prefer to travel later in the month, but it looks like the Southern California APs are no longer blocked out at that point. Because of that, should we go earlier in the month during the week when they are still blacked out? Or does that not make a huge difference in the size of the crowds?

I would go earlier. The first few days when the lower passes are allowed back in are typically very crowded.

I'd recommend August too but keep in mind towards the middle of the month there will be closures for the Halloween overlays. HM goes down mid month if I remember correctly.

August. And it's not even close.

The best reasons were already given (crowds, longer hours), but also take under consideration - you get to see the original Haunted Mansion experience, and not that creepy Jack Skellington version. I know some love it, but for me, it was fun at first, but nothing beats the original.
