Ok, me and DH have managed to get rid of the kids from 2 august until 9 august this summer. I asked DH what he thought about going to WDW without the kids and he thought it would be great to be able to do what we wanted and ride stuff together. My hesitation is crowds and weather as I know they are going to be in the extreme. I guess what I am looking for is reassurance that we would be able to do a fair amount and not pass out. How do you prepare for summer trips? What do I need to know? I've only been in january before!!!

A very excited but hesitant Claire xx

loads of people do it Claire, so it can't be that bad! if you're on site you have the easier option to go back to the pool in the middle of the day when crowds and heat are worse and you can make the most of EMH to do all the stuff that you really can't miss. I'll be considering auguat after next year as I can't take Callum out of school when he goes to secondary.

Hi Claire,

We are restricted to August too now but do not have a problem going then.

If you go from the middle of the month onwards the crowds are not too bad at all as the US schools have returned, well many of them have anyway.

Like you say it will be very hot, however you do adjust after a few days and just generally have to be sensible when touring the parks, getting there early and basically avoiding the hottest times of the day.
Touring the parks in the evening is recommended also, although in our case Joshua is usually pretty tired by then!

The main problem is the much discussed high flight prices, which is more of an issue than the weather to be honest, especially if like us you want to upgrade your flight seats for the return flight (only way Josh can sleep)...we go for 3 weeks now to make the most of it.

Overall it's not a bad time to go and I would not necessarily worry too much about it, although if I am totally honest I am sure many of us would go at a different (less expensive) time of the year if it wasn't for the school holidays.

It's so much easier and more relaxing when there are just two of you, that the crowds and heat won't seem too much of an issue.

It's always busy at WDW - there are just degrees of busyness! Get yourselves Annual Passes if you don't have them already, so that you don't feel you're tied to the parks (i.e. if you've had enough of the heat/crowds, you can just leave without feeling you've wasted a day's ticket). Make sure you avoid the parks' EMH days at all costs, even if you're staying onsite (I truly believe this is the most important crowd-busting strategy). Take time to smell the roses - the best part about going without the kids is being able to chill out and do things you wouldn't normally do.

I'm sure you'll manage! Go and get it booked, girl! :p

We've been in August & found the weather bearable. Hot yes but when we went it rained every afternoon, which cooled things down a little. The weather didn't stop us doing anything except move our visits to the water parks to mornings to avoid the rain.

It will be easier without your kids too, you'll be able to go at your own pace & decide if & when you need a break- lucky you!

the parks are open really late in summer-sometimes til midnight. You could chill out during the day and then wander in late afternoon-go for it you'll have a great time :thumbsup2

We go August or September every year (well August now since DS started school). Its hot, humid but otherwise fine! Those dates are pretty busy.
I dont think i would go for one week, but then again, without children.... um... maybe I would!!!!!

Last year for the first time we went in the summer (after always going in Feb) and I too was a bit wary of the crowds and heat. However, we loved it. To beat the crowds we were in the parks for opening time and managed to whizz round everything we wanted to do by mid morning, then we either hopped or strolled around the same park or went shopping. The parks got noticeable busier at lunch time and the lines longer (about 1 hour, water rides having the longest lines). We did follow the quiet days schedules offered by Simon Veness and avoided early morning/late evening openings for guests of Disney. I would have to agree with UKDeb about these dates being best avoided because we did accidentally hit one late evening opening at Magic Kingdom and the crowds were horrendous. Buzz had a line of 1 1/2 hours, we couldn't get out of the park fast enough. People have said that it is best to visit the Disney park the next day if it has had a late night/early morning the previous day. I think a lot of Americans try to make the most of their one day passes by going to the parks on the special days.

I certainly would book up and go and have a whale of a time.

Have you thought about Las Vegas instead!!! We went here when DD was 6 and have decided not to go back until she is 21!!!

You could probably get cheaper flights here in August than Orlando as it is not a school holiday destination!!

Just a thought

Well I've gone and done it, 5 nights booked at the Poly 2 August to 7th August for me and James, including tickets, dining plan and premium economy on Virgin. We've got a plan to do parks early in the morning, come back and chill by the pool all afternoon, and then go back to the parks in the evening. I made my ADRs last night and got everything I wanted:

San Angel Inn
Mama Melrose fantasmic dinner package
Le Cellier
Kona Cafe lunch
Citricos
Ohana dinner

I was a bit suprised but the very nice lady said it was no problem to get a table when you are a party of 2 and I got my choice of times too :woohoo:

I'm just a little bit over excited at the moment :hyper: but I don't care. It may be a little holiday to most of you (5 nights, 6 days) but to me I would fly to Florida for 1 night I love it so much. I'm off to get in shape now for all that walking and I hope to see some of you there,

Much love and pixiedust,
Claire xx

Sounds like it going to be an amazing trip...lucky you, :woohoo: :goodvibes

without having Kids with you I am sure you will get lots more done in 5 days and it will be great just to be able to do the things you want to do..
Just wondering though if you are going to tell your kids and if so how are they going to take it? :rolleyes1 .

Well ...I told them this morning before school and I explained to them that I would have more fun with them in October because there is no Halloween party in August and that I would do all the boring stuff now that they didn't want to do (World Showcase which I think is great but them not so much ;) ) DD was just concerned that Dad would be coming on their trip now and she was relieved when I said he was just doing this trip. :lmao: I don't know, maybe Daddy is too boring and grumpy when hes wrestling with 3 tired kids at the park  Anyway, the news was taken well and I have been told to tell the characters they are coming and maybe get a cute note from a couple of them to bring home,

Sounds like you have great kids :goodvibes

You will have an amazing time! Sure it's hot, but enough air conditioning to balance it out. We've only ever been in August and find it bearable. You and your husband will have a fab time. You can stay for the really late shows-Spectromagic is often on at 11pm and enjoy the park at night.

Many congratulations, now get planning!!! :teeth:

well done you! i totally agree with you-i would fly all that way for 1 night of magic too :wizard:
