August 9, 2011 (8/9/2011) Taking the Wonder to see the AMERICAN CHILD

You're going to have to wear SHOES in Alaska!!:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:
At least for me as a Crocs werer, I can still wear my Crocs sometimes! :) My feet are NOT going to be happy otherwise! If I'm not at work, my feet don't want to wear shoes!

We had some of each when we were there. Drizzly, sunny, and pouring. The good news was, when it did pour rain, it didn't last long at all.

Yep, sounds like Seattle weather!

i'm packing an umbrella!! just in case...

oh...just so you know, i've lightened our packing. took some stuff off the list. a little nervous about it...but i did it!! feels so good to have space in our luggage!! for all the souvenirs i will be bringing back!

:flower:

After I had my FE gifts ready I thought that UMBRELLAS would have been a great FE gift for this cruise..... (that's me... "always a day late and a dollar short" as the saying goes. Hopefully we won't need them!)

i just read someone asking if they were packing an umbrella. if not, i wouldn't even have thought of bringing it. i'm hoping we won't need it, but it doesn't take up much space in my luggage. besides, the wonderful people here helped me to lighten my load!! :flower:

It is only 9:04 am and I have already checked the boards 4,012 times (at least). Excited much?

Bummer :( I just called Air Canada to see if they had my special food requests correct. I have 2 with gluten-free needs. They told me that they don't provide any special food on North American flights. So, hopefully we will be able to find some things in the airport since we can't go through customs with open food either. Can't wait to get to the Wonder where everyone can get their special food requests filled!

There are now 4 GF families on our sailing that I know of. I'm sorry you won't be able to have special meals on the plane but I suspect you'll have a WONDERful time with meals on the ship.

Hope everyone has their goodies ready. Ours arrived at the Vancouver Pan Pacific the other day safe and sound. I have printed out the list and will bring 30 copies with me. I will put them in your FE on the first night.

I also got a white board for my cabin door in case there are any cabin changes. I noted my cabin number on the top of the list, it's 2080. If you have a cabin change (which I doubt since the ship is sold out from what I understand) you will need to note it on my cabin door.

So, if you get to a cabin and there is no FE, you'll have to trek to cabin 2080 and look for the update on the board.

Hope this goes smooth...

If there is anything I am missing please reach out to me.

See you all soon!
Joe

I was teasing Barb, 'cause she hates wearing shoes. :rotfl:

Go without shoes, and you run the risk of stepping barefoot into a pile of bear *oop.pooh:;)

I hate shoes too. Flip flops I love. Guess I'll have to take my chances with the bear poop! :rotfl:

Something we did on my last two cruises, a Weekly countdown to the cruise. Its a long way to go right now, but as the time gets under a year the weeks start flying by.

Weekly countdown
97 weeks until the August 9 th, 2011 Alaska Cruise:dance3: :cheer2:

:cheer2: :dance3: :hippie: pixiedust: :beach: :clown: :jumping1: :rainbow: :Pinkbounc :dumbo: :simba: :maleficen party: :dancer: :rockband:

Had to repost this to show everyone how long we have had a countdown! Pretty amazing!

The words to the song Alaska's Flag were written by Marie Drake, a long-time employee of the Alaska Department of Education, and set to music composed by Elinor Dusenbury, whose husband was commander of Chilkoot Barracks at Haines from 1933 to 1936. The Territorial Legislature adopted Alaska's Flag as Alaska's official song in 1955.
Eight stars of gold on a field of blue,
Alaska's flag, may it mean to you,
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes and the flowers nearby,
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams,
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear," the "Dipper," and shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
O'er land and sea a beacon bright,
Alaska's flag to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.

I guess I better pack tomorrow - to me that means picking out my clothes. My brother called today and invited us to his new house Fri. night - he actually invited us over Sat. but we'll be in Seattle - so I won't be able to go into that last minute panic making sure everything is packed - that will have to be done Fri. afternoon. Good thing DH isn't working Friday night or that would make things worse.

I have a few things in my mind of what I'm bringing, but don't have anything packed yet. Hmmm, maybe my wonderful DH has some stuff taken care of! ;)

For those people taking in the Fireworks in Vancouver this weekend-CBC News article

Fireworks fans will descend on Vancouver’s West End once again Wednesday night for the second show in this year’s Celebration of Light.

A team from Spain will put on a 25-minute display entitled “Odyssey,” starting at 10 p.m.

The fireworks are launched from a barge anchored in English Bay, 300 metres offshore from the intersection of Denman Street and Beach Avenue.

The Celebration of Light, now in its 21st year, typically draws hundreds of thousands spectators to each of it events. The July 30 crowd was estimated at 300,000.

That show featured a display put on by the team from China. On Saturday night, it’s Canada’s turn in the final event.
Road closures

Traffic restrictions come into effect at Kits Point at 6:00 p.m. PT and in the West End at 7:30 p.m.

Vehicles owned by local residents and authorized commercial vehicles will still have access to the restricted areas.

City officials have issued a reminder that consumption of alcohol in city park areas is prohibited.

There were more than 600 liquor pour-outs, two dozen liquor seizures, and 10 drug seizures at last weekend's show, said Const. Lindsey Houghton of Vancouver police.

Police also confiscated 26 weapons, including three sets of brass knuckles, eight cans of pepper spray, four knives, and an ice pick.

Two people suffered minor injuries in a knife incident following the event.
