August 2016 Car Rental Rate watch

I've seen some drops lately too. I'm a National fan and find it harder to book with them now. What happened to all the great codes there. Seems none of them work now. The rates are out of control, but I still keep trying. Even the codes on mousesavers don't work anymore. Right now I've go a rate for 9 days and both Alamo and National are the same (which is still high). I have $364 for a 9 day rental....National Aisle--full size minimum. Same price with Alamo, for intermediate car.

Now my rental is $334....unfortunately none of the discount codes/contract codes are working on National. The $30 coupon still works. sunpromo stopped working, but worked a few weeks ago.

FWIW, I used the Vegas Brazil $50 code last week. I did the online checkin with Alamo, and went straight to the car. The rate was the same as my quote. We drove the car to the exit, and the receipt printed by the woman in the checkout booth had the same amount. When we returned the car, the receipt was actually $7 cheaper than the quote I was given. We paid $182 (including prepaid fuel) for a Standard (aka Fullsize) for 8 nights/9 days.

These codes can drive you nuts! When I add the AS1 code it brings my cost up! I've had the best luck using the BJ's codes so far (not a member of Costco)

I tried the AS1 code for our dates, and the price was much higher than the one we have booked already too! My best option so far has been to go through Costco Travel. I would really like to see our rental come down in price. :wizard:

Interesting

I used the coupon for reservation early May, had to 'work-it' at the gate to get it honored.

I was unable to do online checkin with the $50 coupon for trip end of month. Told the coupon has been nullified/removed from reservation. The reservations are still intact, just $50 more. Was able to call them and get a different $25 coupon applied & received updated email confirmation.

I used the $25 off coupon AD3868JST with the Costco code and got it down to $344 for 12 days, compact car.

Thanks for the $25 code above laurabelle. I just cancelled my reservation that had the $50 code and rebooked using the $25 code for my August reservation. Not worth the hassle for a difference of 25 bucks...

I was actually surprised. I had cancelled my reservation initially when I read all the reports on the April and May boards about the hassle, but I couldn't find anything else so I rebooked with it. I was ready for the fight, but then nothing....

It's a moot point now, you no longer book with it or check in on-line with the code.

Appears you were able to check in before they changed things around. The fact that Alamo has done that is likely a CYA type of thing that they will point out when one questions 'why' the coupon isn't being honored as 'an expired code'.

Can show up with a pre-printed reservation in hand and hope to have them honor it. Sure not my idea of a great start to a relaxing vacation. Not fun to be sitting in car @ gate with long line behind you, honking away.:rolleyes1. I didn't expect to have to press my case @ the gate.

I shared to spare others that experience. Naturally, it's up to the individual as to whether they want to also argue their case - as to whether the original coupon should be honored. Just hope they will choose to do so @ the counter, not in line in front of me @ the gate in August or October this year.

Now that the code can't be used to book new reservations, the issue should fade away.

Pretty much the same as above. I had a reservation with the $50 code and has already months back checked in online and printed out the paperwork. But once I tried checking the reservation on the Alamo site this morning and could no longer click on the reservation number and see the reservation because of a coupon code error, I figured the heck with this. I've always had luck with the gate person adjusting my reservation if the price they had pop up didn't match what was on my paperwork in years past but for a difference of $25 I figured why be sitting there waiting and hoping when I could just be on my way. Of course, to each their own, I don't blame anyone who wants to roll the dice, I just choose not to at 9am on my first day when all I want to do is hit WalMart, the ABC store and then go check in and be at the pool to have vacation officially underway.

Alamo rates are trending down for the past couple of days. It's still higher than I wanted, at $600.99 for 2 weeks+3 hours using an upgrade and passholder code, but it's heading in the right direction!

My 12 day rental is down to $314 with the above $25 off coupon and Costco code. elle101me I don't even have a Costco near me, but buy a membership for the car rental savings. You might want to check it out.

Hi-mine went down $10.00 again from yesterday-the above code AD3868JST with BJ's contract Id-I'm at $349 for a 13 day rental. It was over $400 a week ago or so-It's for a midsize. How low can they go??? Fingers crossed- I feel like it's becoming a part time job to keep checking the rates (lol!)

Via carrental savers

AP code & $25 coupon starting 8/13

Alamo compact week starting 8/13 = $186

My dates (slight under when the 'weekly' rate kicks in) = $153

Still didn't bite too high for what should be relatively slow period (week or so prior to FDP).

Thanks, I may look into it. I have it down to $503.90 for standard/full size for 2 weeks, 3 hours. That's using a BJ's code and Alamo upgrade code. I'll keep checking as I'm sure the rates will keep going down.

I'm just checking different options, and when I tried the $25 off coupon code AD3868JST, it's saying code not found?

Thanks! That must have been why! Worked when I typed it out instead of cut & paste. Unfortunately, it didn't help my rate as much as the BJ's code.
Too bad it didn't help. I'll add that the Costco rate includes a free second driver. Does BJ's? For a longer rental, it's important to us. There's still lots of time yet. I'll be very happy to see it drop below $300.

Yes, BJ's includes a free 2nd driver. I am down to $449 today.

My Alamo rate has gone down to slightly below what I booked it at back in February with the $25 off code and Save With Alamo #7014926. It's only a couple dollars for me but it's a nice trend! 8/10-8/15 Compact $173
