August 2014 Car Rental Deal Watch!

WOW, mommyrosa2...I just checked Dollar after I saw your post, and I can save $170 if I pick up at the Wyndham DTD (9 days, midsize SUV, still returning to MCO). Have you done this before? I'm just trying to figure out the logistics and what kind of time this would take. I'd have to get a cab from MCO to the Wyndham, but I'd still save $100+! Thanks for the heads up.

We've rented from them before but we usually take ME from MCO to our resort then arrange for Dollar to pick us up from our resort so we can get our vehicle. As for timing...we normally take the first flight into MCO which normally arrives around 10:00ish in the am and usually arrange our car rental pick up time for 1:00p to be safe. Glad you were able to save some $$$ :goodvibes

We'll be there Aug 16-30, too cool.

Yeah, I agree, the pricing thus far this year has in fact been different than past years at this time. Quite honestly, the prices they are asking this year are out of control. I locked in a few weeks back at a price I am kind of comfortable with but it's still about $5 more a day higher than previous years. If I have to keep it I'll be ok, but the the prices went up again today to insane amounts, like $900 for 2 weeks for a mid size. :rolleyes2

Virtually the same dates for us (we're the 17th to the 31st). Current prices are off the charts :faint: .

I am wondering if demand is significantly higher for those last two weeks of August, which seem to have become very popular (especially for us northerners). National isn't even showing our reserved vehicle (a midsize SUV) as an option any longer, so perhaps its completely sold out?

More folks renting means less availability and higher prices for what's left. My two week SUV ressie at $466 taxes in is looking absolutely golden in comparison to current rates!

It seems weird to me that demand would have gone up *that* much to warrant the crazy prices we're seeing right now. Unless there is something going on in Orlando the end of August we aren't aware of. It's just crazy off the charts and really makes you wonder what the bleep is going on!

I'm sure happy I made a booking a few weeks back when prices hit a steady decline for a good week. I'm locked in now and less than half the current posted rates. Nutso!

My airfare was also up substantially from the last two years (same time period). Co-incidence?

I have a minivan rented through National using the KLM code for $435.00 for 10 days. I am thinking it might be the best it will be. I'll continue to check but the rates have INCREASED instead of decreased so I'm not holding my breath for miracles. With that said, I signed up for a KLM account. Do I need to have anything with me to use the KLM code?? I'm planning to use the kiosk for National if there is one available.

I cant believe the rates for August. I have started looking and only need a compact or economy for six days and Alamo, Dollar and Budget are looking close to $400 all together. Hoping there will be a drop soon. Not too many specials listed yet for midAugust. Has anyone done the Priceline rentals. I would really have to look into it for any "red flags". Will check if they will let you cancel without penalty once you book. Thx in advance if anyone has any experience with it. Grammy

I have used Priceline many times. They only use the major suppliers, and I've never encountered any issues with any of them at MCO when I booked through Priceline's name your own price tool.

Totally agree with PP, Priceline is the only way that I will book a rental car.

Can someone tell me what the most reputable agency is for renting a car in California? Right now we are looking at flying into and out of Oakland (cheapest flights) Aug 9-19.
We have always rented cars in Florida and this is our first time going to California.

Rates started dropping today on dollar. Still more than I hope to pay, but better than its been.

Went back to check dollar, and it seemed like it was a it higher than when I first checked, but they did have a City Special for a full sized car. Total price only $5 more than the compact or economy so I booked it. Will keep checking but I wanted to get something locked in since the prices seem to be going up and up. Will also check priceline when it gets close. Any other Priceline suggestions/info. Thanks Grammy

It is back up today...$600 for a midsize from August 9-19. I booked the city special on Friday for $401 for a mid-size. Still ridiculous, but less ridiculous than $600!

Our dates are 8/13-19. Really hope they come down! Keep posting August dis peeps if you find any better rates! Thanks!:)

I checked my rental for Aug 20-Aug 30....Almost $400...Glad I have it booked for $188

I booked a full sized at Thrifty back in August for $218.48 which I thought was high. Now I am glad I got it.:)

Is the Lake Buena Vista Wyndham Resort within walking distance from DTD? It is much cheaper for me to rent from Dollar there, with a dropoff at the airport then a roundtrip airport rental. I was going to take ME from airport to AoA. Our first night we usually head to DTD, so picking up the car there would be easy if it is within walking distance.

Yes you can and it is about a 5-10 min. walk.

Another question for priceline experts. When you make a bid, is there any way to indicate that you want the vendor to be in the airport, not outside via a shuttle? thx gram

Prceline only deals with companies IN the terminal at MCO.

Dollar is back down this afternoon. I rebooked at $316 (down 85$).

Gramontherun, Your dates are now $223 for a midsize, about $5 cheaper for a compact.
