August 2012 Car Rental Thread

I have to say that the rates are stressing me out. I was really hoping to spend around $500 for my minivan for 2 weeks not over $700.

I just rechecked with Alamo and with the Costco rate and coupon, I'm down to $638. check your rates.

This just boggles my mind. I realize it's supply and demand but the crowd calendars are looking about the same as when we went in May (maybe a point or two higher some days) and we had an Alamo mini van for 200 dollars for 10 days that trip!!!
450 more for virtually the same thing? Makes me mad for you.

We have gone pretty much the same time every year for the past 3 years and I always pay around $198 all in for a week or just shy of $400 for 2 weeks yet this year it's not going down. I'm gueessing more and more people are hoarding reservations until the last minutes

The cheapest I can get with Dollar for my dates is $730.

I was thinking that too, but I leave in a week and I'm still not finding anything lower than the Dollar City Special that I booked a few weeks ago. I check several times a day, with all different companies, using different codes and everything is still high. I wish that people would cancel their old reservations when making a new one instead of holding several at a time. It makes it look like their inventory is lower than it really is. I'll keep checking right up until I leave hoping to get a better rate.

I always cancel old reservation the second I make the new one because I am positive at some point I would end up with more than one reservation to pay for:crazy2:

:) exactly why I always cancel mine as soon as I make a new one. I mentioned this like 100 pages back on this thread, about hoping we are not creating a false sense of demand by holding on to too many reservations.

Besides, I don't have any reason to hold on to a higher reservation, once I score a lower price :thumbsup2

I will send out good thoughts for you, that you will snag a last minute deal or something :goodvibes

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

My Alamo rates are still higher than when I reserved

At this point with my trip 30 days out I'm doubting that I will get a lower rate....but, I'll still check every day!

don't get me wrong I too book and cancel all the time but I wonder if it doesn't affect thing considering that everyone including me start so early looking for good rate and book and cancel as we go. They get a pretty good idea way ahead of time that X amount of people are looking kwim. for one , i find it hard toelieve that budget has no minivan left for August 10 or 11 to August 24-27.

Try Code TIND1 if you haven't already with any coupon. It should give you a great rate. It's the newer version of the old T1 or TI1 code.

Hi everyone,

I also cancel my reservation asap as why hold another one that is higher?:confused3

I tried just the costco code and I also tried the TIND1 code. The TIND1 code was actually higher for my dates.

The best thing going is the AMEX corp code 7014291 with your insiders ID and the AA coupon AD2359FDF

This is with alamo.

Have you tried all of these together at the same time? Also, I find early in the am the rates are lower compared to when I check in the afternoon or late night. Hope that helps!

For what its worth I have had NO LUCK with my priceline bids. I am bidding for 40% off the $333.00 total with all fees minivan I have and I am not getting it. Priceline should advertise its 40% off THEIR price not a price you could get somewhere else.

Still hoping for last min but at least I can live with $333.

Keep trying your rates! I booked this rate at about 20 days out. See past posts. One day it dropped from 420. to 333. over about 30 to 45 min!! Have faith!:littleangel:

That's exactly what we were thinking.

I have $115 all-in for a standard for a week. I can live with that. :)

The TIND1 code must depend on the dates. I just tried the AMEX code and coupon. It gave me a rate of $682.92 which is a little over $400 more than my rate.

I do the same thing! I've seen others post on these boards and others about holding several reservations. I cancel right away when I book a new one because (1) I'd be afraid I would forget to cancel them all and get stuck paying for more than one. (2) It ties up inventory so the company thinks its renting more cars than it really is, which drives the prices up.

I've got a reservation with National, but I can NOT get it to send me, or anyone else, a confirmation e-mail.
I've been trying for 2 weeks. The page says it sent the email, but it never arrives, and it's not in my spam catcher. :confused3

Will I need the email, or just a printed copy of the reservation page ?

Thats weird. I made a ressie on July 6th and got an email confirmation no trouble at all.:confused3

I think a printed copy of ressie page is totally fine.

What is the TIND1 for Alamo do I need Any kind of membership card?

That's a controversial PEP Master Contract (german) code. No one is quite sure of what it is - perhaps for travel specialist professional use. I have not seen anyone denied use of the code, but use at your own risk ;)

Even that code is higher for our dates but I check for a reservation for 1 week early and it comes up to $398 instead of $1400 with costco rate. Maybe the closer we get to the date the lower the rates gets with that code. If the rates goes down for my dates with that code, I will give it a shoot and let you all know right after we leave MCO. I've researched a bit and it seems like everyone simply us the kiosk with that code and AA coupon and no question asked.

I just tried that TIND1 code and got $120 for 7 day economy. I'm kind of nervous to use it. I'll have to research it. Minivans were super cheap using it. In the 200's with the $35 coupon.

That German "Pep" code drops me about $300 on my 13 day - rental with Alamo. I am a little concerned about using it, too. If something seems too good to be true.....

I am renting in Tampa as well as returning there. I did put in a full two week rental and will just return it "early" because I'm finding the 2 week is less???:confused3

You do realize they can adjust your rate if you do not keep it the full two weeks.
