~ Aug 2013~ Sew what... We've gotta find a way back! Part I!!

Wow, can't believe how far behind I got!

Tuesday night (at least I THINK it was Tuesday night...) my oldest daughter had a little scare with the pregnancy... we now know they will probably be inducing labor soon...she has 6 more weeks to go but with the MUCH elevated blood pressure and the Pre Eclampsia, they don't think going full term is going to be a good idea.

Then we also had our launch on Tuesday night....

I love the kitchen drawings. Seeing it drawn out always made me think it was becoming real...

I like the second roof line better...I don't like it when additions LOOK like additions.

My husband is such a softie where our Mr Max is concerned. Mr Max likes to 'hug' you. He is a very touchy feely type of animal. He has to be touching you all the time. He literally jumps up on his hind feet and places his front feet on your shoulders and lays his head on your shoulder! One of these days I will have to take a picture!

Hubby is 6 ft plus and around 280 pounds...he can hold his own against the dog...the rest of us...not so much! LOL

Nini I will add your daughter to my ever growing prayer list :grouphug:
Don't worry

PS Please show us your DH and Mr Max that would definitely make MY day

Ah thanks... I am really not at the WORRIED stage yet. My daughter and SIL are at that stage, although they try to pretend they aren't! They did not really realize that a c/s was a possibility when they went in...so they are paying a bit more attention now!

Right now, for me it is more about changing schedules around to accommodate everything!

I actually got my camera to try and get a picture(hubby works nights and it is time for him to be home) and discovered the battery is dead...now where did I leave that power cord???

I think that I actually like the first roof over the garage more. It brings more visual interest to the house. Also, with the second roof line you have a lot more roof showing. Since this will be an addition, the roofing material won't be an exact match to your existing roof unless you are planning to change out all of it. I don't think I'd like that.

In my last house, we had the microwave over the stove. I did like it there. Here we have a microwave shelf because we have a built in double oven and a cook top. My kitchen in my last house was a lot like your kitchen with the u shape. But when I re-did the kitchen we change the u shape to a center island because I hate having to walk around the peninsula every time I wanted to go to the table. Your shelves for the cookbooks are smart. I don't have those and I wish that I did. I have a built in desk in the kitchen and I love that. I can check FB and do stuff on the computer while I am cooking dinner etc.

Well I might be having him on Monday. :faint: I'm hoping to let him cook a bit longer, but my blood pressure has been really high. At least he will be full term. :)

Prayers to you for a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Sorry you're having so much trouble.:flower3:

your kitchen cabinents look very similar to mine. We bought them at Home Depot with a Contractor discount. They are Kraftmaid and I love them. I have a built in china cabinent and I love it, it was my brothers idea and I almost said no but it was actually a good one.

I wish we could get a contractor's discount... But Home Depot does offer a military discount - so we would take advantage of that.

I like the bottom house picture, the top one looks off to me.

Have a great day, I have a day of running around today and it is going to be a long one.

I agree - I am leaning towards the 2nd one, as well.

I hope you had a great day yesterday, and that you got to relax a little bit.

BEAUTIFUL KITCHEN!!!! seriously it is so amazing!!!

Thanks Mo - it's not mine yet. Although, every time I walk into my current kitchen, I dream it's there.

I like the longer roof... just seems visually appealing/symmetrical.
plus you have to account for squirrels..

Um... I don't think so... You know I can't do squirrels... LOL

i REALLY love the new kitchen!!!

Thanks! Now we need to figure out the most cost effective way to get it done, how much of the project we want to take on ourselves, and when we'd like to start on it... I'd love to start on it this summer - but a part of me wants to wait until next summer...

Hard choice on the roof line my first instinct was the first one. In the drawing it looks like the entire front is flat, but doesn't the addition project out in front of the older part?

I just looked closer and I see it does. Now I think I like the second one! I'm such a big help, haha!

You are right Stephanie - I mentioned that to Josh the other night... So, basically - where the teeniest part of the roof attaches to the other side of the house - IRL it's about 12" of roof - that's how much it will attach to the addition portion, but it will go all the way across. So, the drawing is a bit off - but it's a pretty close rendition.

Yeah, although mine won't admit it!

I hear you. They have more of a modern, clean look. We want to redo our kitchen but haven't started to plan for it yet. I'm not sure if we will use IKEA cabinets as they don't really have the look I want either. I think we will do our bathroom first and we will likely use IKEA cabinets there.

I like the concept drawings of the kitchen. I especially like the pantry cabinet/coffee bar/built in china cabinet. If you want to get rid of the open space under there, what about replacing it with an upright wine rack on one side and glass fronted cabinets for the rest of the area? Or glass fronted cabinets on either side with the upright wine race in the middle?

That's pretty much what we'd like to do. I wish I had a picture of it, but I don't. We wanted glass doors on the sides and a lattice type wine rack in the center - more tall than wide. However, if we were to take the one available from that cabinet maker - it wouldn't fit into that spot. Which I don't get. :confused3 We really only wanted to nicely display about 10 bottles of wine. I have had another building supply center recommended to me - they are local (not a discount chain) and I am told, they have a very good reputation, along with competetive prices. So, I may be meeting with another kitchen designer in the near future.

I did find a picture that very much conveys what I want our built in China cabinet to look like - but on a VERY MUCH SMALLER scale...

One thing to think about is the microwave over the stove. I know many people have this type of setup and there is nothing wrong with it, especially if you are used to the microwave being above counter height. A former colleague, who is a health and safety professional, sent out some information a while ago on the increasing number of injuries coming into hospitals being attributed to this setup, mainly from burns and cuts while removing items from the microwave. The burns came from hot items in the microwave being spilled as well as from pots being inadvertantly knocked over while removing items in the microwave. The cuts were secondary injuries from cleaning up broken glass when the dish being removed fell and broke due to one of the reasons above. Just something to think about.

Hmmm... That is definitely something to consider. And something I did not think of. I think the only person who might have an issue with that is me... LOL

The second one appeals more to me as a designer. It is more balanced and in proportion with the rest of the house. In the first one, I do like that the peak of the garage matches with the peak of the existing house, but there is something about the peak of the kitchen being lower and that huge gable end that doesn't quite sit right visually. It looks like Josh is using a computer program to do the elevations. Does it also generate 3D pictures? You may want to see it in that perspective too as something else may jump out at you. If it doesn't, PM me and I'll see what I can come up with.

I agree, I am leaning towards that second one too. I know his angle on that first garage roof was a little off anyways, but I agree - I think the 2nd one looks better.

His program does not do anything in 3D, unfortunately. :( If you think you can generate a 3D image - I'd be happy to send you any information you might need. :thumbsup2

I wish you lived closer so I could borrow your husband. I washed all of my valences over the weekend and while hanging the one in my guest bedroom, the hardware pulled out of the wall. DH took one look at it, said I can't fix that and walked away. :confused3 So now I have a towel rack and valence hardware off the walls and no one to fix them. We are going to have our house painted this fall so maybe I can get them rehung then.

I think I agree with Lois... Even though I default to having DH do things like that - I think those are easy enough jobs that you could accomplish. And what a feeling of triumph it would give you!

But any way, I love the design for your new kitchen. I would love to have all that counter space and cabinets!

Thanks! DH seems to think we would be losing counter space - but I just don't see how?

And as for the roofs, I like the first one better. No real reason though, it is just more appealing to me than the smaller version.

Hmmm... And I think I am leaning towards the 2nd one?

A couple of things - I think I like the smaller peak over the garage. It just seems more in line with the rest of the house.

I think I do too.

Also, I love having my microwave over the stove. I can see where it could be an issue with removing hot dishes, however, I've never had an issue with it. I am short too - only about 5 feet and was worried about it being too high, but it isn't. Also, I love the additional counter space where our old microwave was.

I agree - I would just love to have the counter space that this configuration frees up... I was thinking that putting it in one of our pantry cabinets would be an option too - but I really don't want to lose that space either. :confused3

My suggestion for the wine rack would be to add another glass front cabinet where the wine rack is for additional storage and put the wine rack below it. I like the cabinet style and the type of door handles can really change the look. I switched out all of my door handles when we bought the new stove and it really did change the look of the kitchen. The cabinets are the original from when the house was built in the 80s, but there is nothing wrong with them, so I didn't want to switch them out.

That is a very good idea! That is one I will definitely consider!

I like the second roof option. I can't say why, it just looks a bit better in my opinion.

Thank you - I am thinking that too.

When we moved to our house, it has the microwave over the stove/oven. I have had no problem, but the two teens that can reach it (Chelsea is still upset that she can't pop her own popcorn anymore, because she can't reach) have had some issues. Jacob no longer will do anything with liquid in it (like soup) because he has burned himself twice by spilling it on him. Marissa keeps dropping the dishes. Teens just don't seem to remember to slow down and take care. At least mine don't. Jacob actually wants little to do with the microwave anymore. He is a bit traumatized over the whole thing and I don't like to let Marissa near it, because I fear for my dishes lives. But, we aren't going to change it and they will just have to learn to be more careful.

OK - that is interesting, as well. I know when I have been in houses with this configuration - I didn't really love it, and now that it's been mentioned here a few times - I am not sure that it's something I want - but I don't know how to go about doing something different?

I like the second roof too. The other was too much siding/flat wall, in my opinion. I'll bet those two pantry cupboards will be full in no time!

I am thinking the 2nd one too. And I am sure that I won't know what to do with all that pantry space? LOL

Ruth is a perennial name, there's always some in each generation, but never up near the top of the list. Again, I think that's because some how, connecting "Ruth" to a little girl makes her stubborn/opinionated and something of a smarty-pants. Not that any of those present here are anything but sweet, demure, gentlewomen.

LOL

I hope Ruth is okay too. That dizzy/falling thing has me concerned.

I know... I think I will send her a message on Facebook today to see how she is doing.

DH & his family are tinkerers - possibly genetically, as they are Irish/Latvian Gypsy lineage. His favorite fix-all is Lock-Tite. He's repaired everything from plumbing to his shoes with it. But he did draw the line at repairing our freon line to the AC with Lock-Tite last year when the valve went. Thank God. His dad & brothers are always putzing around with something & I have a set of solid heavy shelves that his dad made in my sewing room (on the messy side of the room, so no pictures.) They are also something of a gear-head family (FIL drove Dirt-Track when he was a teen) and I've declared one of my BILs a "Car Whisperer" because he can fix nearly any car.

LOL about Lock-tite. Josh is totally a tinkerer - always has to have a project on his plate.

It's funny you say your kitchen remodel started with needing the floor redone. I did the same thing with our last house. The floor needed done and I said, well, as long as we're going to do the floor, why don't we get new cabinets and as long as we're getting new cabinets, we'll probably need to get granite countertops, and while we're getting new granite, we'll need new backsplash, and of course new stainless steele appliances, a new sink, faucet, ceiling fan/light fixtures, paint, hardware. Oh, and since the floor goes from the kitchen to the garage door and past the powder room, we'd better do the powder room too. New cabinet, sink, vessel bowl, fancy faucet. We did keep the toilet, though=-) THEN the rest of the house looked so shabby, (not really shabby, but needing a spruce up) So all new doors, brand new windows throughout the house, new tile in the two upstairs bathrooms, granite for the upstairs bathrooms and paint in every. single. room! both up and down and in the finished basement. ALL BECAUSE MY FLOOR NEEDED REPLACED!! A year later we sold the house and my dream kitchen.

LOL - well, this is definitely going to be us. Except we did the new doors/windows thing about 5 years ago.

Yesterday DH was supposed to get a simple 1 hour surgery on his gums because he broke a tooth and the gums around it had to be removed to place a crown. Well, once they got in to the surgery they found the tooth could not be saved and had to extract it. 2 1/2 hours later, they were finally successful. The root of the tooth was imbedded into the bone and gave the doctor fits. All this to say, while he was in a great deal of pain, he thought of something he wanted me to tell you about your laundry room. He said make sure you either have them put a drain in the floor or a tray under the washer (they make them especially for that purpose) in case a water line problem comes up down the road it won't ruin your flooring in there. I'm sure your contractor knows this, but he thinks of these random things.

Oh no... That does sound very painful. I hope he is feeling better today. Please let him know that our thoughts and prayers are with him.

Good call on the drain... I will make sure that we have something in place for that. Thanks for the reminder Lois' DH. :thumbsup2

I have to say I like the first roof better. The second one just looks proportionately small to me. Of course, seeing in the the 3rd dimension would probably make a difference.

See, and I think that the 1st roof looks too huge... LOL I do agree that the 2nd roof does look a bit small... I wish there was some way to do the roofs so they looked a bit more proportionate?

I forgot now who needed their towel rack and curtain rod put back up, but let me encourage you to do it yourself! It isn't that hard and it is very rewarding to accomplish something like that. Might even encourage your DH to try his hand at simple fixes around the house. DH says if it's just holes and the drywall is still intact, just go to Lowes or such and buy some toggle bolts. They will go into the hole and spring open to give you somewhere to attaché the screws for the curtain rod. You could ask someone at the store how they work. This is if there is nothing behind the hole such as a stud. If there's a stud, just purchase a wood screw that is long enough to bite into the wood. Same would go for the towel rack.

I agree... I hope Ariana sees this.

Just found out yesterday that my DD is having another girl. That will be 3 girls and 1 boy. They were kinda hoping for another boy just so Miles would have a fighting chance. But they're happy no matter what. She's due the middle of August.

Oooh - congrats on the little girl!!! I loved having little girls to dress... :thumbsup2 They were so adorable back then... I always had to dress them alike - or coordinating...

~ so glad you got so much accomplished after being such a lazy butt all weekend! My goodness, you work so hard. If you take a weekend off, you shouldn't feel badly. Give yourself a break! And I love the pics of MM! What a character! Josh can't say much now, since you have proof.

ROFL... I know I shouldn't be so hard on myself... But I take my deadlines so seriously. If I fall behind, there is just no one else out there that can catch me up, but myself. And if I fall behind - that affects my schedule for months out... I do have to say that's one thing that really has made me realize how hard it is to have your own small business - ultimately, everything falls back on the owner, and the owner is responsible for the wellbing of the company and the happiness of it's customers, bottom line. Even if the owner is the only employee. :rotfl2:

Hope you had fun at Target and didn't have to do end caps since you hate them so much. Hope all the people were nice to you and that all your snow melts. It's been high 60's for two days and I'm loving it!! Love wearing the sandals!

Target was OK... Not horrible.

Ice storms today, so no flip flops outdoors. :scared:

Sorry this is soooo long. It's been a few days since I've been on here.

No worries, just happy that you had the time to hop on The Dis. :thumbsup2

Well I might be having him on Monday. I'm hoping to let him cook a bit longer, but my blood pressure has been really high. At least he will be full term.

Oh wow Ashley!!! I hope the little guy can stay in a while longer, but I understand the need to do what is best for you both. Please keep us updated if and when you can, and please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers over the next few days/weeks. I hope, once you have a chance, you can show us pictures of the little man. :flower3:

Congratulations & good luck. You will be in my thoughts!

D~ I like the 2nd. I tend to gravitate toward what I call tiering roofs. I love the 2nd one actually, and if I ever have a house built for me this is what I would like.

I love different roofs too... However, I hope this one looks good. It's just so hard to visualize.

I love your kitchen. So pretty. Look forward to seeing photos of the finished project, as I am certain you are anxious to be able to take them.
Hope your Target day was smooth.
Glad to hear Allies is recovering well.

Thanks - me too! I just hope that it becomes more of a reality than a dream.

Target was pretty good. Glad to have it over for another week. LOL

She was... Update at the bottom.

Oh blessings to you and Congrats to you too Lois !

Hi Ruthie!!!

Please know that DIL is in our prayers. :grouphug: Please keep us updated as you can.

Then we also had our launch on Tuesday night....

How did you do? I am sorry for being a bad friend - I honestly didn't even get a chance to get over there to look at everything. I did see a few items in my feed, but I don't think I saw yours.

I love the kitchen drawings. Seeing it drawn out always made me think it was becoming real...

I loved seeing it in 3D - I was so worried that the sink wall was going to be super small, but it doesn't look bad. Once we came home and remeasured (for the trillionth time) - we found a few extra inches, so we aren't sure if we are going to try to add another small cabinet in there - or leave it as is? I would love to get something on the left side of the sink to make the sink more centered (Yes, it's that centered thing again...).

I like the second roof line better...I don't like it when additions LOOK like additions.

I agree - I don't like it when additions look like additions either. I think this one will be pretty good, honestly. Since we just resided and did new windows a few years ago, we will be able to match the siding perfectly. :thumbsup2

MM does the exact same thing! He won't do it to Josh or I, and rarely to Victoria - but Alli is his buddy - we are convinced he thinks she is his own puppy. LOL

**********************************************************

Everyone is talking about babies above... And it makes me miss my little girls so much... They were so cute and so crazy back then...

OK - bad news on the Alli update from yesterday... :sad2: Poor girl called me shortly after work yesterday... They were doing "plyos"... I had to look it up - the definition is: Plyometrics, also known as "jump training" or "plyos", are exercises based around having muscles exert maximum force in as short a time as possible, with the goal of increasing both speed and power. This training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extension to a contraction in a rapid or "explosive" way, for example with specialized repeated jumping.[1] Plyometrics are primarily used by athletes to improve performance,[2] and are used in the fitness field to a much lesser degree.

So, I guess the kids were jumping over mats, and she rolled her ankle. It seems she sprained her ankle in a bad way. We are taking her to the Dr. this morning, as it is still quite swollen, and she cannot put any weight on it at all. Aside from the pain, she is just very upset about it. She is afraid that she will not be able to participate in Track for the remainder of the year, but we assured her that even if she cannot particpiate, she still needs to sit in on practices and meets. She is also very upset because she has really built up a lot of endurance, and she is afraid that she will lose that. Poor girl is just so upset - I can't say that I blame her.

We have been icing it and she is taking ibuprofen. We do have crutches and an air cast from V last fall (which is currently MIA... :confused3)...

If you could all keep her in your prayers for both her pain and her spirit, I'd really appreciate it.

**********************************************************

Nothing else real magnificant to report.

I've been prepping my grocery list for my big shopping trip tomorrow. I was able to get a little reconnaissance mission yesterday after work. I went around the store with my list to double check the prices on the items... I do not want to be stuck with a $200 bill again.

I also learned something new that I wasn't aware of. As I was walking through the store, I had my Target receipt out from my last (fiasco) trip, and some of the items I had purchased were now on sale. I marked them on my receipt so I could get a price adjustment - becuase I was with in my 2 week adjustment period. The way Target does their coupons, they subtract them from the actual price of the item... So, in this case - Josh's shaving cream was $2.89. I had coupons that totaled -$2, so on the receipt it states that I paid $.89 for each of them. Which is no big deal. But now, they are on price cut for $2.49, so if I would have waited, I would have paid $.49 each. But when I went to get the price adjustment, the register would't allow it, because even though it was $2.89, it said that I only paid $.89, which is cheaper than the $2.49 that I would have paid yesterday, so it didn't allow the price adjustment. This is good information to know. Normally, I probably would have been a little upset about it, but I can see why Target does this. Essentially, if they didn't, people could return these items at full price, and eventually make a cash profit from them. Which was NOT my intent, but I do understand why it is done this way.

**********************************************************

After we get back from the Dr. I plan to work in my sewing room for the remainder of the day.

I hope you all have a wonderful day today.

D~

It's funny you say your kitchen remodel started with needing the floor redone.

My second ex-husband (so embarrassing  to say it that way!) was a general contractor, and he called this "While You're Here..." syndrome, which is very similar to "We Might As Well..." syndrome, and how he made a lot of his money. ;)
Anyways - I would love some feedback on the two different roof peaks over the garage, which you prefer and why. :thumbsup2 If you have the time - of course, and you aren't so sick of giving me opinions in the first place. :rolleyes1

Do you have to have a roof peak at all? I think I would prefer either none, or 2 "doghouse" dormers similar in style to what you have on the main house instead of either option shown here. Anything extra on the roof looks like a snow catcher to me, but what would I know . . . I don't think I've ever experienced more than 10" of snow at once in my lifetime, how would I know whether it's a problem accumulating on a roof or not? :lmao:

OH! I also wanted to say that the right contractor should be able to retrofit a smaller wine rack like you want into your china cabinet. Just because it's not stock doesn't mean it's not possible.

I forgot now who needed their towel rack and curtain rod put back up, but let me encourage you to do it yourself! It isn't that hard and it is very rewarding to accomplish something like that. Thanks for the advice. I'm just about as hopeless as DH when it comes to repairs but the toggle bolts sound easy. I may have to give that a try. The thing was up with three screws and they pulled out of the wall. The bottom one did a small amount of damage to the drywall but I don't think enough to stop me from using the toggle bolts. I'm not worried about how it will look because the valance will hide it.

As for the towel rack, the problem there is that DH took it down when I was on vacation. The thing is in about 10 pieces and for the life of me I can't figure out how to put it back together in order to rehang it. I may eventually just buy a new one that has instructions. For now, I got an over the door towel rack.

What a bummer about Ali's ankle! I hope everything goes well at the doctor's today and she is able to get back to participating in track soon.

As for the roof choices, I always seem to pick the opposite of everyone else. :rotfl:

Thanks for pointing out Lois' post, I did miss it. I may have to give fixing it a try. I'm not much better than DH with repairs but at least I don't do more damage than good like he does.

OH NO!!!! the poor kid!!! Give her a hug from the stranger in Chicago.. (Yeah i'm sure she'd appreciate it...) Seriously i hope she is good and back up in no time. she can still do the upper body work outs. don't lose that!
Keep me updated!!!!

Allie just can't catch a break. (maybe not the best use of words) When my DD (who was completely NOT an athlete) started doing track, she got shin splints and was told by the coach that she needed to train her body all year long, even though track didn't start until spring because it leads to injuries if you just start when track season starts. I don't know how active Allie has been, but that could be contributing. I'm so sorry this has happened to her and I hope she recovers quickly. I will definitely pray for that and for her to feel better about her situation. I agree that she should still try to keep in shape with upper body and as you said, support her teammates. Poor thing!

Thanks D and everyone for the well wishes. I will definitely post pictures.

I hope Alli feels better soon. Poor thing.

Just a quick mid-day Alli update...

They are just back from the Dr. After the x-ray, praise the Lord it is just a bad sprain. She is off of it indefinately... She can begin upper extremity excercises after 1 week... No word on when she can start doing lower - I got the impression that it was more as she was able to.

Thanks all for keeping her in your prayers and thoughts today. <3

Good luck with your sewing. I'm hoping to get to play with my new machine a little more (I did a little word embroidery with it after setting it up yesterday) if we have power. We're under a tornado watch until 7pm, but they originally said that it'd be in our neck of the woods at noon, so I'm not holding my breath one way or another.. I'm a little annoyed at the weather people right now.

Speaking of weather, Stay warm and safe in your ice storms.

The three Ruth's in a row, giving Allie hugs from 3 parts of the country!! Poor thing!

I have had a difficult week! I came home from the hospital with laryngitis, had a holter monitor on for 48 hours and now have an ear, sinus infection with a stomach bug and haven't kept anything down since Tuesday morning. If I can't keep fluids down by tonight , I have to go back to the ER. I had a antibiotic shot at the DR plus he was very concerned about dehydration .

Thinking of everyone tonight!
