My oldest ds best friend is moving in with us. The have decided to move atleast 3 hours from where they currently live, coupled with the fact there are some problems going on in the household. They have decided to let their ds live with us. He is really a good kid, very polite and all my family really cares about him. I think he is going to fit in great with our family.
His mom was going to talk to an atty to see what papers we needed in order for me to be able to sign him in and out of school, approve medical procedures and things like that. Well its getting closer to to the time and she hasnt done it, she was asking a friend what papers we needed. Looks like I'll be the one talking to an atty but I was wondering if anyone knew what papers we would need. Guardianship papers, Power of Atty??
Thanks

the laws of each state vary, of course, but I don't think a power of attorney is sufficient. I think you probably will need some formalized guardianship. a power of attorney, by definition, only allows you to act as the parent's representative in legal transactions, it doesn't give you any custody rights. most public schools require that a student legally live in the school district, which is not true unless you have some formal right to custody.
