I've read in one of the previous threads that some spiel roles such as the Great Movie Ride (which i really want[ed] to do!) can be incredibly difficult to learn and that they are quite picky as to who they let do that role, etc. Are there any other reviews of other spiel roles? What are the spiel roles without as much memorization or roles that may not be AS intense, I suppose? I know that the safari would probably require the most training.. thank you so much to all who reply! :lovestruc

Anything considered a "spiel" attraction will have a lot of memorization:

Great Movie Ride
Killamanjaro Safaris
Jungle Cruise
Epcot Innoventions

You could probably add Studio Backlot Tours to the spiel list as well.

It actually went to an automated spiel for the Backlot Tour a while ago. There's still Guest interaction in the special effect demonstrations, but that's more public speaking than spieling.

Actually, the Special Effects Water Tank Show is a show. There are cues and blocking that have to be memorized, and the show looks a lot better if the "director" is actually performing, rather than just reciting.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. I've only been on that ride once in the past 10 years or so, so I don't remember much haha.

Every spiel attraction has a lot of memorization and training included! I worked at The Great Movie Ride for my Fall 2010 CP, and not only do you need to know the spiel word-for-word, but you need to know how to drive the tram, you need to know your show speeds and blocking for the scenes, plus normal attraction positions like loading. It's a LOT to learn in less than a week.

The Great Movie Ride seems like the most fun spiel/acting thing to do ever. I used to dream of doing it when I was around 9 and first rode that ride. Those cast members made me feel like everything was really happening. Lol.

Wow, so you only have a week to memorize it all? If you mess up, do they retrain you, or maybe place you somewhere else?

Yes (at least at GMR, anyway). But you get lots of time to go over the script at work, and I know people who got extra days to go over things. Also, if you feel a speiling ride isn't right for you after training, it is possible to change attractions.

just reading all this makes me want it even more! The jungle cruise just seems like the perfect fit for me.

Is the spieling on Innoventions comparable to GMR or the Jungle Cruise or is it basically just presenting something?

I think the script from Innoventions is pretty strict (as it has to be followed exactly, from what I've been told). There is no leeway, like with GMR and JC

Are there copies of the spiels available so you can look at them before you get down there?

thanks,

KC

Hey! I worked safaris!!

Yes, you only get a week to learn it. But I started memorizing it the first day. The safari (and actually, the other ones) isn't that bad because you can separate it into smaller chunks. IE: entering the forest spiel, rhino spiel, okapi spiel, etc. and then you just interact with Wilson. It's really not too bad, and gets much easier when you're actually driving.

I used to be nervous about getting on a microphone and getting people's attention: not anymore!

Anyways, I loved it. I told them in my interview that I wanted a position around animals (thinking I'd get maybe a walking trail), and they asked if I had spieled before. I had, nowhere near the scope of the safari (just safety spiels at the local amusement park), and they kept asking if I was comfortable with long spiels. Most of my co-CPs were theatre majors, as well.

It was great to me because you got to always be doing something, and could mix it up a bit. It is pretty intense, but I thought it was way more fulfilling than standing all day pushing a button or checking lap bars.

If you have any more questions, I'd love to answer them!!

ETA: One big difference between safaris and most other spiel roles is that the safari lets you get off-script a little, mostly because we never know what order the animals will be in or what they are doing. GMR especially but most other spiels have to be spot-on, no matter how silly you think you sound, which I think would make it harder to do and more repetetive.

I worked at JC... I was excited for a speil attraction and the CM I was training with was not. However we both did great and loved working their. We call it a see it say it Jungle.... when you see something you say something about it!

Not all of Innoventions roles are spieling. It's actually split between Host/Hostess and Presenter roles. Presenters do the spieling and are usually responsible for 2 or 3 venues at most. The presenter venues consist of Don't Waste It, Stormstruck/Stormkit, Where's the Fire?, Segway Central, and UL Safety Smart Lab with Timon and Pumbaa (not the other UL demonstrations). Everything else is a Host/Hostess role and does not have a script, just basic suggestions of things to say, namely just make sure you say the venue sponsor's name. Also all Innoventions cast members do PAC for Illuminations which has no script. If you end up as a Host/Hostess, you'll likely develop your own little spiel for each venue depending on your position in the rotation if it warrants one. Sometimes if you're lucky and there aren't enough Presenters to cover all their positions, you might get sent to an entrance or exit greeter position in a Presenter venue and get the Presenter bonus pay, which is awesome.
