Attire - Mother of the Groom

My dd is getting married in September and I'm working on the weight loss thing before I shop for the dress but I'm looking. Last week Steve Harvey had a MOB on his show looking for a dress. He had a consultant helping her. He told her a MOB shouldn't take the twins out for a walk on her daughter's big day. Ha. Cracked me up.

Reading this thread has made me realize that I must have a horrible memory. If you offered me a million dollars to tell you the color and length of the dresses my mom and MIL wore at our wedding, I couldn't tell you. I have pictures in an album that I could refer to, but off the top of my head, I don't have a clue.

I found nice dress selections at Macy's, Noordstom and David's Bridal, but finally found 'the one' at Lord and Taylor. Have fun and congrats!

When I got married we were very informal. (Husband is a cowboy so a tux or suit was not going to happen;) ) The brides maid dresses were a deep red color and my Mom found a really pretty light pink skirt with matching jacket. We were all quite surprised on our wedding day when mother in law showed up in virtually the same outfit as my mother. (They ended up looking a bit like a strange set of second brides maids :rotfl2: ) It was not that big of a deal but it was strange. You probably don't want to be too matchy matchy with the bride's mom. (Now nothing mIL does surprises me!)

The moms choose what colors looked best on them. They didn't match each other or the bp. I wasn't concerned with that at all.

I was actually talking about color. Of course the MOB and MOG would not wear the same dress as the bridesmaids (or each other). But I thought colors COULD match....
I was more talking about style as well as color. I just don't think the moms should be wearing the same color as the bridal party. I want to stand out, not blend in with the girls!!! Give me something that compliments them, in a grownup style and I'm good to go!!!

When I got married I had a ivory colored wedding dress and my bridesmaids wore light pink. My mom had a really nice knee length dress that was a little darker ivory than mine and my MIL wore a pink dress that was a little darker than the bridesmaids. It worked really well and the pictures look great. I've been to weddings where the MOB or MOG wore a totally different color and stood out like a sore thumb...

That would be my mil!!! I wore an ivory gown, my matron of honor wore deep forest green and my bridesmaid (my 14 y/o dd) wore a peachy color...the two of them pretty much matched stylewise. My mother wore a very similar dress in peachy coral to what my dd wore. My mil??? Silver!!! Didn't match anything..but hey, she didn't want a new dress. She was happy with the one from a previous wedding. I just didn't rate a new dress from her...not surprising.

Wow, never realized how easy I made it for the moms in my summer garden wedding 30+ years ago. I couldn't decide on a color for my bridesmaids to go with the gray morning suits my husband chose, so I opted for white for all the girls. :rotfl:

My mother wore soft yellow, and my MIL a pale dusty blue.

It was late July, so we had all sorts of white: my sister wore white with colored trim, my SIL a floral on white background, and then there was the best man's date who wore white gauze with no underwear...:rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

I'm a Mother of the Bride and I can't figure out what to wear. It's an outdoor wedding. The bridesmaids are wearing short dresses, the groomsmen and groom are wearing grey suits.

My daughter keeps picking out long gowns for me. I've never met or spoke to her future mil. They live 2,000 miles away. My daughter said she's wear slacks and a blouse.

How about a flowy sundress type thing, but on the dressier side?

Or if you want to go even dressier......

This is actually a pretty good website oevrall for dresses:

You really have to consider the overall "tone" of the wedding. If it's a beachy casual, then I'd go with a more casual sundress type thing. If it's goign to be more formal, I'd go with a more formal look. If the MOG is goign to be wearing slacks and a blouse, unless it's a super dressy pants outfit then I'd probably go more casual.

This one is really pretty, I think:

has anybody on here bought from J.J's house. They have lovely choices including bridesmaids dresses and you pick color and fabric but I know nothing about them.

Just don't wear black. It's a depressing color on a very celebratory day.

LOL- I had a black and white wedding....the bridemaids wore black dresses with white trim, MOB and MOG also in black dresses.

I loved it....everyone looked great :)

Oops! My kids were married in a church, so no girl's night out.
My son is getting married today :thumbsup2

I actually bought my dress first before our vacation last month. They have only been engaged 6 months, so less time to get everything done. Her mother found her dress about a month ago. No one is stressed about what we wear. The bride is very laid back and let her moh pick her own dress too.

My dress is basically a cocktail dress so not something I'll wear all the time, but it will get worn again.
Congratulations!!

So many great suggestions and experiences and pictures! Thanks!

This is a pretty informal wedding - it's being held at a local library (they both are huge book lovers), but it's at night too... so that confuses me.

Anyways... colors are light blue and gray. Nobody has picked out dresses yet so I'm not quite sure if the bridal party is even going to be wearing full length or not...

I asked my son - he said wear whatever, LOL. Yeah right. I have never met the fiance. They are 1500 miles away. I'll probably have to contact her on Facebook, but I think based on what I know about her, she is not going to care what I wear. But I still want to be "safe" and not start off our relationship on the wrong foot.

I found this dress yesterday which I LOVE, but it's ivory so I'm hesitant that it's too close to white ? I did find another dress in a steel gray which would blend really nice with the wedding colors, but I love the ivory dress more and I would definitely wear it again for other occasions.

Is ivory inappropriate? I know it's not the "traditional" look of a mother of the groom, lol, but I just can't see myself in a beaded jacket type of dress.

I think it's a pretty dress and you look great in it, truly, but I'm going to be honest and say I do think ivory/ecru/off-white is too close to white to be worn by either mother at the wedding. I know at least one person on here said her mother or mil wore it, but I think a lot of people would silently object. Sorry!

To me the dress would be a great one for an older bride/second marriage at an informal wedding.

ETA: I don't think I could wear the beaded jacket dresses, either. Just not me and I'd feel very uncomfortable.

I have to say I agree--it's a very pretty dress, but I don't think I'd wear it to a wedding. (Especially as you don't know the fiancee, which raises the stakes a bit.) Based on your description of the wedding and your tastes, I think any simple cocktail dress would do nicely. If you think you'd wear the steel grey one again, I'd go with that; otherwise, I'd keep looking.

I really think wearing ivory or white is inappropriate.

Too bridal. I would definitely stay away from white or ivory.
