Asthma Inhalers through airport security?

My 14yr old needs to bring along his advair, and his inhaler. Both are not in the boxes anymore, so they do not have his name on them. etc.

Do I have to buy new ones and keep them in the box? Just for airport security? (that will be expensive as he doesn't use them often, and these are both pretty full)

How does airport security deal w/this?

We haven't flown since 2005, so yes... I am clueless!

I took an inhaler with no label on it through security in August and left it in my purse through the scanner and had no problems getting there and back.

It is considered a liquid and needs (depending on the TSA agent, based on the pp) to be declared, but does not count towards your 3-1-1 because it is a medication. I have had my backpack hand searched before becuase it was not pulled out before.

It does not need to be in a box, I carry mine all the time and believe me, if it is a problem, I would have been singled out for it.

I flew 2 times last year to Orlando with my inhaler in my purse (I didn't realize it is a liquid) and was never asked about it.

I always carry both of my inhalers in my carry on. (Rescue (albuterol) and daily preventative (Symbicort). I have never had a problem with either and I don't bring the boxes. I have had severe asthma since childhood and have flown all over the US and abroad without issue. Your son should be fine. Have a great trip! :thumbsup2

Yeah, 99 people could go through security and not have an issue and me being the 100'th would have my bags searched for it. I think there is a flag on my name or something because I always get stopped at security for something. If there isn't a problem with something in my bag, it will be a random explosive testing........

I keep all my medications (including two asthma inhalers) in a separate quart ziploc bag and put it in the bin with my 3-1-1 bag as I go thru security. You're allowed to bring them and you don't have to prove it's your prescription or anything, but since they are aerosol and liquid, you need to pull them out of your bags. I just keep them all in a separate ziploc to ease the process. I just keep both bags in my purse and pull them out as I get to the line.

I do this as well. It just makes life a whole lot easier in case you are that person that they decide to question about having a liquid/aerosol in your carry on. The one time I forgot to put my lip balm in the ziploc, I was delayed for a few minutes while they tested it. They kindly gave it back to me and reminded me to put it in the ziploc next time.

Thanks for the replys. I'll make sure we put them in the ziplock back correctly. :)
