18 is my understanding but it would be a very unusual circumstance where one would want to put someone who was very young on as an associate. They don't get any of the perks or discounts but they can reserve and make changes on the account. If one were thinking of putting them on the deed for discounts or trips on their own, it's also 18 but they become an owner at that point and if they have financial issues, it could affect the ownership. Also, it is counted for FAFSA. While a lot of people don't list it as an asset, technically it is supposed to be listed and it counts more if it's in their name.

You don't need to add her as an associate on the account OR add her to the deed for her to be able to go using your points. However, the only way she'd get any member specific perks is if she's on the deed, being an associate will not accomplish that. She might get some perks though just living at the same address such as AP and other similar discounts. Otherwise you just reserve and put it in her name. We added my adult daughter to the deed at ONE of our resorts a few years ago but not my son though as a rule it's not a great idea for most situations to do so. We knew the risks and elected to take them.

Everyone told me in November that you only get the DVC AP if you are WITH the member. That I, as the associate and wife of the owner, would not get the DVC AP if I went without DH.

The associate gets no card, so there's nothing but a keycard (if you get that) to show that you're staying at a DVC resort to *maybe* get you perks.

I think it's hit or miss, that's why I said might. The same for other perks at times. We've been able to activate passes when the other party was not present as well.

We never put our daughters as associates. We added both of them to the deed as soon as the youngest turned 18. We wanted them to be able to enjoy full benefits if they travelled to WDW on their own. I know some say it's a risk if they run into financial hardship later but it is a risk we were willing to take.
