How do you get to be a mod? (not that I want to!)

Periodically, we'll decide that we need additional moderators on a forum. When this happens, the existing moderators on that forum as well as the webmasters will look at posters who have been consistently involved, helpful and knowledgeable on that forum to identify potential moderators. The existing mods will then determine if they find any of these people to be good fits for their team, the webmasters will take a look at that person and their history, and that person might then receive an invitation to join the moderating team.

The key things we look for are posters who are consistently helpful, who are positive presences and respected by other posters, and who are very involved on the forum where we want to add someone.

1) There's no real list of MIA's or banned members.

2) See if the response about search a couple of posts before this helps at all. If not, I might need to yell for Alex. He can spin your head with all kinds of technical details. Be careful what you ask for!

Oy, vey!!!

1) A mysterious and moody little creature who does what she wants to.

2) We have thousands of posts each day, and human volunteer moderators. We may not see every problem, and human judgement of many different people is involved in moderating posts. We've tried to level the field with the infraction system, by defining problems and assigning different infraction values to them. It's not perfect, but it does provide a much better and more consistent set of guidelines than we ever had before.

3) A mysterious and moody little creature who does what she wants to. Oh, wait- that was a different question! A webmaster is an administrator who provides technical leadership for the forums or who works to select and support our moderators. We just do whatever we can to keep the DIS boards and the people who spend their time here working well and having fun.

4) Search is really, really hard on our servers. It creates a huge processing load, which takes a big toll on the speed of the forums. It essentially made posting so slow that posters frequently got time out errors. About a year ago, we turned off search on our servers because of the problems it caused, and Alex and Pete have been working very hard to implement another search solution that does not kill our processors.

5) I have no idea about WPASADI.

I miss that, too. Unfortunately, that was actually part of the search function that's been disabled. I don't expect to see it working again, but I suppose anything's possible.
