Art of Disney "On Demand" Warning

I think I sent this to the Podcast Crew a few months back as an email, and was going to call it in as a voicemail after this week's show, but I have lost my voice as part of a cold, so this will be a post to the board instead :)

From the examples that I have seen hanging in the Art of Disney, the print quality of the "On Demand" Attraction Posters seems to be lackluster. Now, this may be my opinion, and I may be a quality snob, but... it appears that the "On Demand" posters have a bit of graininess to their print, as opposed to the "regular" posters you may see that you can purchase in the tubes.

Anyway, if you're interested in making the purchase, at least check with a Cast Member first to see some examples. Your eyes may see it, they may not, or I may just be loony. All of these are viable options. To each their own :)

Thanks,

I've seen the On Demand prints at the DTD Art of Disney store, I almost bought one and I sort of know what you mean about the quality. The CM there showed me a few of the prints and a couple were good, but I did think one was a little grainy. I thought it might be because of the size. It was the biggest print. I wound up not buying a print because of the size. I wish they would give you more size choices. Both sizes offered are pretty big, I would have probably bought a couple if I could have gotten them in a 16x20 or 18x20 size.

I would say if you are thinking about getting one, ask the CM if you can see one that is already printed and do check the quality/graniness thing. Or if they don't have one printed, ask the CM if you have to purchase the print if you aren't happy with the quality.

I was most impressed by the ones printed on canvas. The CM took them off the wall and brought them to us to look at up close and they looked like paintings to me.

I didn't really look at any of the posters - and all of the largest size were all hung up high - perhaps to hide the poor quality.

I would suggest checking the actual print they make for you before paying for it to make sure it's the quality you expect before paying for it.

Amusingly enough, the poster that I had originally seen as an example was for Philharmagic... lo and behold, when I returned 6 months later, that same poster was hung MUCH higher on the wall, and I could not find any low hanging versions of the large "On Demand" posters.

I would like to see one of the canvas ones, as I do believe the concept is excellent, even if the execution (currently) is sub par.

Bye. :)

None of the posters/art Kim.

I was interested in the concept art of the Pirates stuff for my brother (long story, he lost his job and had to take a new one in Connecticut where he lives during the week and only sees his wife and kids on weekends in NJ - I wanted to get him something to make his temporary home a little bit warm) but it was too expensive (almost $400 after the framing, etc in the size I wanted).

I'll have to come up with another idea for him.

Kevin has started collecting something from the classics collection and he got a few more pieces - but I'll let him talk about that if he wants.

Well thats cryptic. :rotfl2:

I have started buying the Disney Classics "it's a small world" Christmas ornaments.

The set currently consists of several of the children from different countries as well as some of the other set pieces from the attraction (like the purple flowered hippo)

I've always been a fan of Mary Blair's artwork and these are based on that.

These are not inexpensive ($29.00 each) and I try to get one every once in a while.

I got the little France can-can girl ornament on my last trip. I got her at the Animal Kingdom shop that has some of the nicer art pieces, they only had a couple of the Small World ornaments though. I'd love to see the purple hippo!

I buy an art on demand ride poster on every trip now, and my biggest complain is the white borders on the prints are not even! They look really crazy once framed. :(

try matting the posters before framing it might be a little more money but you'll get even borders!!!!:thumbsup2

I second that. I went that route with the Peoplemover poster I got in December. The quality of it wasn't that bad, though it's definitely a step down from the pre-fab ones they used to sell. I was/am happy with it, though.

One other caution I would give, however, is if you're going to order one on your trip and want to see it before you pay, make sure you order it early on. We were assured we'd be able to print and pick up the same day, and so we went on our second-to-last day (the DTD shopping day ;) ). When we went in, they said come back in an hour to pick up. When we went back, they said they had no poster tubes and weren't able to print anything (there was a backlog of about 20 orders by that point). But a shipment was supposed to be coming the next morning, so we planned to come back to pick it up before we left. Lo and behold, we go back the next day and there are no tubes again, so they offer to comp the shipping for it, and it would come in a week-ish. Fast forward to two weeks later and no sign of the poster. We phoned to ask where it was and they had no record of shipping it, so they sent another one. :badpc: Later that same day, the first poster arrived! Why there was no record of that is beyond me. Anyway, we called back to cancel the second one and in the end no harm was done but it was a tad frustrating, especially because they route the calls through a central 'call center' for DTD and we could only talk to someone in the actual Art of Disney store sporadically.

Anyway ... shop early. :rotfl:

I was so excited to find that one! And now it looks spiffy in the hallway with the Tomorrowland poster, the pirates and the Happy Haunts. :thumbsup2

Where did you find these ornaments at the Christmas shop or the Art of Disney. My entire tree is Disney ornaments.

The Small World ornaments are really nice, but they aren't just ornaments, I mean there are, but they are like small china figurines. I'm sure I never saw them in the Christmas store. The one I got was in the art section of the big gift shop at Animal Kingdom, but I think I also saw them at the Art of Disney store at Epcot. I'm sure if you ask at any of the Art of Disney stores they could help you find the one you want.

Thanks for this info John and Kevin. I have been trying to locate some AK posters for my ds "safari" bday party. I have called everywhere, including the art of disney store, they did not mention the on demand poster option. From what you are saying I am sure that they have a KS poster somewhere in that database. I wonder if you can access it on line from home, hhhmm, I will have to call them and find out. Did anyone recall seeing any AK/KS themed posters ?

I tried to find their catalog on-line, but the only thing that came up was a link to Art On Demand for the Disney Gallery at Disneyland and on that page it tells you what Art On Demand is and the sizes they offer, but then it says "examples coming soon" so no list or anything on-line yet. But there were ALOT of posters you could pick from. I didn't look them all of them, but I'm sure they have an AK poster or two.
