My Dd is checking in on August 12 we probably will not be driving down as we are from NY, if we fly down the day before can we stay at a resort and then go to check in? I can always go back to the resort and leave the following day but is this ok to do for her? Will a taxi be able to take us over to the check in and then me back to the resort? What do you suggest? Will I really need to go to Walmart and get her "stuff"?

Has anyone shipped things down and had them delivered to the dorm by UPS or priority mail?:confused3

Items can't be shipped to Disney housing prior to arrival.

If you stay at a WDW Resort, you would have to take a taxi to Vista Way to check-in. Guest Disney transportation does not go there and it is much too far to walk.

Lots of parents are at check-in.

Others can fill you in on more.

If you do decide to ship things and are staying at a Disney Resort, consider shipping it to the resort and have it delivered to your room. Make sure you call the resort to find out what information you'll need to put on the shipping label.

A trip to wal-mart never hurts, you'll need groceries and the like. When I did my CP, I picked up a storage shelf, definitely helped considering the closets are small. They run about $80 but worth it.

Pop century will be the closest and the cheapest taxi ride. You can ship items to the resort but remember that you would need to bring all that stuff with you in the taxi and sit around with it at checkin. Unless you make another trip later.

She will need to go to Walmart to purchase food. If she picks a roommate ahead of time with a car maybe they can go together. Many people find roommates ahead of time on Facebook.

Another option may be to rent a car for the day. Alamo has a rental location near magic kingdom and they will pick you up at any Disney resort if you call them. Then you can use the car for the day and just return it and take the shuttle back to the resort.

Oh, what a great idea never thought of the car rental for the day. My daughter has abandoned FB due to others catty girl behavior....how else can she meet a possible roomie.

Thank you for a good advice I have learned a lot from your posts. :goodvibes

Lol, Im also from NY but will be driving down. Just keep in mind I don't think you can get an employee discount on the resort (unfortunately) since she isn't actually working for disney yet.

She might want to check out tumblr! People post roommate surveys under the DCP tag and I have seen a lot of them post about how happy they are with who they have found. She can also try looking for a roommate on this board :)

There is also a thread on these boards, where others have posted surveys. She could try to look there.

I have shipped boxes to my resort before. I used FedEx ground, it takes 3 days so I would plan to send about 4 days out. The boxes are held at the resort. When you get into your resort room the concierge will call to deliver.

The Resort Board here on the DIS has threads for each of the resorts which include the shipping address information.

Once your daughter has checked in she will get an address that you can use to mail her packages etc. when you get home. USPS is recommended as the information I have seen says the boxes are held at the Welcome Center. FedEx/UPS will deliver to the apartment and they leave them outside if no one is home, which means they could go missing.

We are from NY also. We arrive 8/12 for my DD check in for DCP. She is doing QSFB. We are driving with friends and I am staying the week at either the Tree Houses or Old Key West -not sure yet as he may change his mind where we are staying. I know my DD was looking for roommates. Not sure if she found any yet as she is very busy with her school work at this time.

There is a holiday inn directly across from where they check in. My husband and daughter stayed there the night before her check in.

Perhaps they would be able to see if they are roomie compatible? My DD is also busy finishing up school for the semester. Perhaps they could get I touch some how on the boards and see if they could be good roomies. Ya never know.

Not necessarily the closest.

Sorry to interupt but I wanted to say my DD started August 15th last year. She extended and is coming home May 10th. We are from Upstate NY (Utica area) We drove her car down last year. Well as far as Lortan VA then we took the Autotrain which was awesome.
But I can say people line up as early as 4 or 5 am to get picks of complexes on check in day. The earlier the better. We arrived last year a week early last year and talked with alot of CP's in the program and there advise was get there early so you do not have to stay at Vista. They say its the party place and not good. I would reccommend staying right accross the road as well. Rent a car if you do not have one. I know as parents the first thing we had to do was get cleaning supplies and scrub (it was not clean) Dried toothpaste bathroom vanity.
If you are planning on rooming with someone all parties need to be present at checkin.
Good luck my daughter loves it as you can tell and is already to looking forward to graduating college and applying for a professional internship.

Where - we are from Saugerties and there is at least one other one going from Saugerties but she is doing Fall Advantage and will be down in May. My DD's college - Hofstra there were 4 accepted in her dorm - she being one of them and 2 of them are Character Performers - 1st time in Hofstra history that they have students accepted as Character Performers.

Yes. That would be good. I know she likes staying up late and will be hitting the parks every chance she can. We will be going down in Dec to visit. We have never done December so I can't wait. She is done with school by the 18th of May.

Wow! We are from Sullivan County, inNarrowsburg. My Dd is the ily person in her college doing DCP this year and from what I have been told she is the only one in a long time. She goes to CW POST in Lomg Island right now. She will be home on the 7th of May. Would you like to see if your DD would be interested in meeting up? Perhaps we could meet in Middletown. That would seem like a half way point.

My one son and I will be going down end of September, that is what we had planned even before she got the position. It so cool to think that if they Re just hanging around one day they can just "pop" on over to see Illuminations or ride TOT on a whim.

These girls are so lucky!:yay:

Forgot to ask.......how old is your DD. Mine will be 20 in August. I believe she will be in a wellness dorm...Vista or Chatham. I think those are the only choices. She is a musical theater major.

That sounds good. We should have looked at CW Post as I think they have a Music Ed Program and I know they kept calling the house last year for her. She isn't far from my Daughter Kali. Hofstra is in Hempstead. Kali is 19 going to be 20 in December - actually Christmas Eve. I haven't been to Middletown in years. It is about an hour or so from here. Depends on the traffic. I did send you a PM also. Thanks, Kelly
